Use a React Error Boundary to keep the interface recoverable and report the caught failure from componentDidCatch. Set fallback state in static getDerivedStateFromError; send the error and info.componentStack to your backend or monitoring service from the lifecycle method. Keep the reporting request independent of rendering so a failed report does not take the fallback UI down with it.
Use the two Error Boundary methods for separate jobs
React assigns the fallback-state update and the reporting side effect to different methods. getDerivedStateFromError(error) returns state that tells the boundary to render fallback UI. componentDidCatch(error, info) is where you log or report the failure. React’s Component reference describes this as a way to log an error to an error-reporting service in production.
class ErrorBoundary extends React.Component {
state = { hasError: false };
static getDerivedStateFromError(error) {
return { hasError: true };
}
componentDidCatch(error, info) {
reportError({
error,
componentStack: info.componentStack,
});
}
render() {
return this.state.hasError ? this.props.fallback : this.props.children;
}
}
This is an illustrative class-component shape, not a complete reporting client. Implement reportError for your endpoint or SDK, and make sure its failures are handled independently. The boundary should still render its fallback if the network is unavailable or the reporting call rejects.
Build a useful, safe report
Include the error and component stack
The error argument is the thrown value. The info.componentStack property gives the component location and ancestry, which helps connect a rendering failure to the part of the UI that triggered it. Forward both when they are useful to your debugging workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume every thrown value is an Error object: JavaScript code can throw strings, null, or other values. Normalize unknown values before reading properties such as message. For example, preserve an error message and stack when present, and otherwise convert the thrown value into a safe, serializable representation.
Add only context your service needs
Application context such as a release identifier or deployment environment can help you locate the affected build. Keep the payload deliberate: React’s API defines the error and component-stack information, but it does not prescribe a universally safe payload, retention period, or privacy policy. Review what your application sends and how the receiving service stores and exposes it.

Make the reporting path non-blocking
Reporting is a side effect, not a prerequisite for switching to fallback UI. Catch rejected promises or transport errors in the sender, and avoid throwing a second error from reporting code into the boundary’s render path. Decide whether to retry or queue failed reports based on your application’s needs; successful backend delivery is not guaranteed merely because componentDidCatch ran.
Make production component stacks readable
In production, React component names may be minified, making componentStack less useful to a developer reading it directly. React explains that source maps can decode the component stack in the same way they decode ordinary JavaScript error stacks. Arrange for the monitoring service or your backend’s symbolication process to have the source maps for the deployed build.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Source-map upload and access depend on your build and service setup. Avoid making source maps publicly accessible by accident; choose an arrangement that gives your symbolication workflow access without exposing files unnecessarily.
Know which failures Error Boundaries do not catch
An Error Boundary is not a global exception handler. React documents that boundaries do not catch errors thrown in event handlers, during server-side rendering, by the boundary itself, or in most asynchronous callbacks. Those code paths need their own error handling and reporting.

React identifies an exception for errors thrown inside a transition function passed to startTransition from useTransition. Check React’s current Error Boundary reference for the behavior relevant to your version, and do not rely on a boundary for failures outside the cases it catches.
Choose a reporting destination
A custom endpoint is a natural fit when your application already has an ingestion and storage path and you need direct control over access and data handling. A hosted monitoring service may provide an established workflow for grouping, triage, and alerts. The right choice depends on your existing architecture and operational requirements; there is no universal winner.

Sentry is one example of a service with a React SDK. Its React guide covers its React integration; consult the current documentation before using vendor-specific setup. Sentry’s React materials also discuss onCaughtError and onUncaughtError for React 19. Those hooks are distinct from assuming that a boundary’s componentDidCatch alone reports every kind of application failure.
Function components still need a boundary component
React’s current reference says there is no direct componentDidCatch equivalent for function components and that an Error Boundary cannot currently be written as a function component. If your application is otherwise built with functions, use a reusable class boundary or a library such as react-error-boundary. See React’s Error Boundary guidance for its current recommendations.
