For a preservation-oriented digital master, use FFV1 version 3 video in a Matroska (.mkv) container. Make a separate MP4 copy for convenient playback and sharing. The master and access copy serve different purposes; saving only an MP4 may be convenient, but it is not the same as keeping a high-quality preservation copy.
Which format should you choose?

What do FFV1, MKV, and MP4 mean?
A codec and a container are different parts of a video file. FFV1 is the codec: it encodes the video. Matroska, usually identified by the .mkv extension, is the container that can hold the encoded video along with audio, subtitles, and metadata. FADGI describes wrappers as structures that contain bitstreams and metadata, distinguishing them from the underlying encoding in its video-format comparison.
That is why “MKV” alone does not specify the video quality or compression. If you want the Library of Congress’s preservation-oriented example, ask for FFV1 version 3 in MKV, not simply “an MKV” or “a lossless file.” The Library of Congress also documents FFV1’s versions in its FF Video Codec sustainability entry.
Why keep both a master and an access copy?
A preservation copy is intended to retain a high-quality duplicate of the recording; an access copy is intended to be easy to play. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends asking a transfer vendor for both: a preservation copy for long-term storage and an access copy for ready use. An MP4 is a practical access copy, while FFV1 v3 in MKV is a preservation-oriented master format.

Making a convenient copy does not require replacing the master. Keep the preservation file as your high-quality source, then use an MP4 when you want a file that is easier to open on common computers and share. The precise quality and retained features still depend on the capture and encoding workflow, not the filename extension alone.
What to ask before a transfer
Whether you digitize at home or hire a service, specify the files you want and check that the workflow can capture the content features that matter to you.

- Request both copies: a preservation-oriented master and a convenient MP4 access copy.
- Confirm the master pairing: ask whether it will be FFV1 version 3 in Matroska (.mkv), rather than relying on “MKV” or “lossless” as an unspecified promise.
- Ask about tracks and metadata: check which audio tracks, captions, timecode, descriptive metadata, and technical metadata will be retained. FADGI notes that features such as timecode, captions, and multiple audio tracks can affect which format fully preserves a recording. NARA says users may request descriptive and technical metadata and checksums.
- Ask for a separate backup: NARA advises preparing another copy of the files, regardless of whether delivery is on a hard drive, flash drive, or optical disc.
When should you use a transfer professional?
A suitable file format cannot compensate for a poor or risky transfer. NARA warns that video digitization can be more complicated than digitizing documents or photographs; it may require specialized equipment and software, along with enough computer throughput. Fragile tapes or questionable playback equipment can make home transfer risky. For those cases, ask a trained transfer provider about producing both a preservation copy and an access copy. NARA’s video playback and digitization guidance, last reviewed November 14, 2023, explains these considerations.
If you are comparing a device or service, verify its actual inputs, supported output formats, operating-system compatibility, and whether it supplies both copies. The capture chain and playback condition matter alongside the chosen format.
