Token-efficient coding agents manage what they keep in their active context, what they shorten or discard, and what they can fetch again later. Compression can make a long history smaller; elision can remove low-value material; retrieval can bring repository details or external memory into the prompt only when needed. These approaches can make room for longer work, but they trade off against lost details, irrelevant retrievals, and answer quality. No single strategy is best for every model, task, or context-window budget.

Why does context management matter for coding agents?

An agent’s context is its limited working set: the task instructions, constraints, conversation, tool results, code, and current state available to the model at a given moment. A long software task can generate more history and tool output than is useful to keep active. The goal is not simply to minimize tokens; it is to preserve the information that supports the next correct action while limiting distraction.

Anthropic’s engineering guidance describes context design as finding the smallest high-signal set of tokens that supports the desired outcome. It recommends clear instructions and well-scoped tools that return efficient results. This is engineering guidance, not a controlled comparison establishing one universally optimal design.

What is the difference between compression, elision, and retrieval?

All three manage the active prompt, but they do different things. Compression rewrites information in a shorter form. Elision removes or truncates material. Retrieval leaves information outside the immediate prompt and fetches it when relevant.

Approach What happens to the information? Main trade-off
Compression Longer history or observations are replaced with a shorter representation. Uses fewer active tokens, but a summary can omit a detail needed later.
Elision Material judged repetitive or low-value is removed or truncated. Can avoid carrying redundant output, but removed details may no longer be available in the active context.
Retrieval Potentially useful information remains outside the prompt and is fetched on demand. Can preserve access to detail, but the agent may retrieve irrelevant material or miss what it needs.

Compression preserves a version of the past

A summarizer might condense earlier tool output and decisions into a short account of the current state. ACON, a framework introduced by its authors in 2026, iteratively refines natural-language compression guidelines using failure analysis. Its aim is to preserve critical state without fine-tuning the primary model. A summary is still a transformation: exact names, constraints, or edge cases can be lost if the compression process does not retain them.

Elision discards material rather than paraphrasing it

Elision can remove duplicate output or truncate low-value material before it consumes more of the active working set. That can be a good fit for verbose results that are easy to regenerate, but less safe for details that cannot be recovered reliably. In one 2026 harness study, staged rule-based elision before LLM summarization produced the strongest overall efficiency among the strategies tested. That result applies to the models, benchmarks, and harness settings in that study; it does not establish a universal ordering.

Retrieval brings information back when a task calls for it

Retrieval keeps information outside the immediate prompt, then searches for useful parts when needed. In a coding task, that can mean locating repository files or code regions before reading them in full. It can also mean querying externalized memory rather than carrying an entire conversation forward. An ACM paper describes agentic context management in which the agent can decide when and how to offload context and query it later.

How do coding agents find relevant code without loading a whole repository?

Repository retrieval is a way to select candidate context, not a guarantee that the selected material is the right context. A system can search for relevant files or code regions and then place some results in the prompt. The useful working set might include the task and constraints, relevant symbols and files, recent tool results, and the agent’s current plan or state. The agent still has to decide what to inspect, what to retain, and whether retrieved material actually informs its solution.

More retrieval is not automatically better. ContextBench, a benchmark reported by its authors in 2026, tracks context recall, precision, and efficiency and finds that agents often retrieve more than they ultimately use. Its dataset contains 1,136 issue-resolution tasks from 66 repositories across eight programming languages. The benchmark makes it possible to examine more than whether a task was completed, but it does not prove that one retrieval architecture is best for every codebase.

The Agent Retrieval Bench authors also caution that their closed-tool diagnostic does not represent every behavior of production coding agents, including systems with editing, testing, and long-lived memory. Retrieval results should therefore be read in light of what the evaluation actually measures.

Does reducing context use improve performance?

It can, in evaluated settings, but token savings alone do not establish that an agent did better. ACON’s authors report peak token reductions of 26–54% across their AppWorld, OfficeBench, and Multi-objective QA experiments versus existing compression baselines. They also report a best result of up to 46% performance improvement, attributed to mitigating context distraction for smaller language models. These are results from that study and its evaluations, not promised reductions or gains for coding agents generally.

A 2026 harness study varied context-window budgets and reports that context management became more valuable when the budget was tight. Its broader component comparisons included 176 matched settings. This is bounded evidence: a larger context budget, a different model, or another task could change the value of a particular strategy.

Compression can remove important state; elision can make removed details unavailable; retrieval can add noise or miss needed evidence. A lower peak active context can create room for a longer run, but it does not by itself show lower total token use, lower cost, or a more correct patch. Those outcomes need to be measured separately.

How should context-management strategies be evaluated?

Compare systems on more than a single “tokens saved” figure. A useful evaluation asks whether a strategy both controls the working set and preserves the evidence needed for a correct result.

  • Active context and token cost: distinguish peak active tokens from total tokens used and monetary cost. They are not interchangeable measures.
  • Task success and correctness: check whether the agent produced a correct answer or patch, not just a shorter prompt.
  • Retrieval precision and recall: assess whether the agent finds needed code without flooding context with unrelated material.
  • Use of retrieved context: test whether surfaced evidence contributes to the reasoning and final solution, rather than counting every retrieved item as useful.
  • Recoverability: determine whether an omitted or summarized detail can be found again when needed. External memory is designed to support later retrieval, though a 2026 harness study found its tested recoverability machinery was rarely used in its settings.
  • Model, task, and budget sensitivity: compare across relevant context-window budgets and task types. A strategy’s value can change with the model, repository, task, and harness.

ContextBench’s focus on recall, precision, and efficiency, along with its gap between explored and utilized context, highlights a practical test: did the agent use the evidence it surfaced to produce its result?

What role do citations play?

Citations are an evidence trail, not a context-compression method. In an explanation of an agent’s methods or results, cite the relevant paper or engineering guidance next to the claim it supports, and state the evaluation scope alongside any reported number. That lets readers distinguish a study result from a general guarantee.

For claims about a coding agent’s own work, a useful evidence trail should let a reader check the underlying basis—for example, which repository files or external sources support an explanation. A citation does not prove that the agent used the cited material correctly; evaluating that requires checking whether the evidence actually supports the answer or patch. The Agent Retrieval Bench authors explicitly limit their closed-tool diagnostic, so it should not be cited as a full account of production agents’ behavior.
