A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To hand a codebase to an AI coding agent, first decide whether it can work in your local checkout or needs an uploaded snapshot. Then give it task-specific context and only the files needed to do the work. A ZIP makes files transferable; it does not make the contents relevant, safe, or complete.
Choose how the agent will receive the code
If the agent can access your local checkout, you may not need to create an archive at all. OpenAI’s CLI guidance describes working in a local project and suggests starting with a request such as “Tell me about this project”: OpenAI Codex CLI documentation. Access and privacy behavior depend on the specific agent and its configuration; check its current documentation before granting access. For example, Claude Code documents controls for restricting file reads in its security guidance.
If the recipient cannot inspect your checkout, provide a snapshot or a curated bundle. Use the comparison below to choose:
| Handoff method | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Agent reads the local repository | The tool can access the checkout and you can configure its permissions. | No manual archive is needed, but file access depends on the tool and its settings. |
| Git archive | The recipient needs a reproducible snapshot of tracked files at a known revision. | It captures a revision, not task relevance, and generally omits untracked files. |
| Curated context bundle | You can share only selected files or the repository is much broader than the task. | It can be focused, but curation may omit a needed dependency, caller, test, or configuration file. |
| Project guidance documents | The work is unfamiliar, cross-cutting, or multi-step. | Concise instructions can explain conventions and validation; stale or unnecessary documentation can mislead or add noise. |
There is no published ideal archive size or established compression target in the cited documentation. Choose based on what the agent can access, what the task touches, whether untracked files matter, and what data you are willing to share.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Write a brief that tells the agent what matters
Do not send a large bundle with only a vague request. A short, precise brief helps the agent navigate the repository and judge whether its work is complete. Include:
- The change or question you want addressed.
- What is in scope and what should remain untouched.
- Likely entry points, affected modules, or data flow, if you know them.
- Relevant conventions or architectural constraints.
- The commands, tests, or observable behavior that define completion.
- How to handle secrets or private data, including files that must not be read or included.
For work in a local checkout, the OpenAI guide to AGENTS.md describes project instructions that can supply persistent context. For larger modernization work, OpenAI’s modernization cookbook shows a planning pattern using documents for project overview, design, and validation. Treat that as an example for substantial work, not a requirement to create files for every small task.

Select files by task relevance, not by archive size
Start with a readable directory map and the files that explain the behavior being changed. Include adjacent code when the task crosses module boundaries: callers, definitions, tests, schemas, and configuration may all be necessary to understand a change. Exclude generated bundles, build outputs, dependency caches, and unrelated large assets when they do not help with the task.
Do not reduce a repository to a handful of obvious filenames if that hides how a feature is wired together. If you intentionally leave out a component, tell the agent what is absent so it does not mistake missing context for missing functionality. Git’s documentation describes what an archive includes, but it does not identify which files are relevant to a particular task.

Create a revision-specific archive when an upload is needed
Git’s git archive command can package a selected tree or revision. For example, this command creates a ZIP of tracked files at a named commit:
git archive --format=zip --output=codebase.zip <commit>
Replace <commit> with the intended commit identifier. Check the current Git archive manual for supported options. An archive represents the selected tracked tree; it will not generally include untracked local files. Add any needed untracked files deliberately, after inspecting them, rather than assuming they were included.

Inspect the exact files you are sharing
Before uploading or pasting code, review the archive contents and remove information the agent does not need. Look specifically for:
- Credentials, API tokens, private keys, and
.envfiles. - Customer records, personal data, or other confidential material.
- Proprietary files outside the task’s scope.
- Large generated files or assets that are unrelated to the requested work.
Git ignore rules are not a universal security boundary. Git documents them as patterns for intentionally untracked files in Git workflows; they do not guarantee that an AI application cannot read a file. Likewise, reading restrictions are tool-specific. Anthropic’s Claude Code permissions documentation describes Read deny rules that can be used for patterns such as .env*. Check the current controls for the particular agent, and verify the outgoing file list yourself.

Check that the handoff is usable
Before sending the bundle, confirm that it opens and represents the revision you intended. Check that the task brief, relevant entry points, related tests, configuration, and validation instructions are present. If some files or data are intentionally omitted, identify those gaps in the brief. For a larger change, include a validation plan with scenarios and expected outcomes; the OpenAI modernization cookbook provides an example of this planning approach.
Conversation history and project instructions also contribute to the context an agent uses. OpenAI explains these mechanisms in its documentation on Codex context and prompting and the agent loop. A smaller ZIP alone cannot compensate for an unclear task or missing instructions, and no universal bundle size or measured success improvement is established by these sources.
