Mars rovers do not guarantee that a rock sample is free of Earth material. Instead, they reduce contamination before and during collection, keep samples contained, and monitor possible contamination sources so scientists can judge what a sample’s chemistry means. Curiosity and Perseverance use different approaches because Curiosity analyzes rock powder on Mars, while Perseverance collects and seals cores for caching.
How a Mars rover drills and collects rock
Both rovers use drills that combine rotation with percussive action to engage rock. What happens to the material afterward depends on the mission.
Curiosity turns rock into powder for onboard analysis
Curiosity’s drill pulverizes rock and moves the powder along flutes in the bit into chambers. Its CHIMRA system sieves and portions the sample, then delivers portions to the SAM and CheMin instruments. NASA describes the sieve threshold as 150 micrometers. See NASA’s sample-preparation overview.
For Curiosity’s first full-depth sample hole, NASA reported a depth of 6.4 centimeters in 2013. Some of the collected powder was reserved for an operational cleaning step before material was prepared for analysis.

Perseverance cores and stores samples
Perseverance’s rotary-percussive drill can use coring bits to collect rock cores, a regolith bit for loose material, or an abrader to remove the dust-covered outer layer of a rock for more representative composition measurements. An internal robotic arm moves tubes and bits. After collection, the rover inspects and hermetically seals sample tubes, then stores them for possible future retrieval. How engineers reduce contamination
Contamination can come from material intrinsic to hardware that touches a sample, such as a tube or drill bit, or from particles and vapors transported through the rover or mission environment. The goal is to limit Earth material that could confuse the interpretation of Martian chemistry or possible biosignatures, while recording enough about likely sources to assess results. NASA’s Mars 2020 contamination strategy describes these pathways and the limits of monitoring in its technical report.

Curiosity used Martian powder to scour drill surfaces
Curiosity’s sampling procedure included using some of the Martian powder to scour traces from internal drill surfaces that might have remained after prelaunch cleaning. Scott McCloskey, Curiosity drill systems engineer at JPL, described the operation: “We’ll take the powder we acquired and swish it around to scrub the internal surfaces of the drill bit assembly.” This is a historical Curiosity procedure, not a description of every rover’s exact cleaning process. NASA’s account of the rover’s first sample also reports that its team made eight drills and bored more than 1,200 test holes in 20 rock types during development; those figures describe hardware development, not a measured contamination rate. Perseverance carries witness tubes to monitor possible contaminants
Perseverance carries five witness tubes alongside its sample tubes. Their materials can capture gases released from rover materials, chemical remnants from landing propulsion, and other organic or inorganic terrestrial material. Scientists can examine this record to help judge what a collected sample may have encountered. The count of five is from NASA’s current rover overview; an earlier design-era technical paper discusses a different planned complement.

Witness tubes are evidence-gathering tools, not proof that a sample is uncontaminated. They do not fully reproduce abrasive contact between a drill bit and rock, nor necessarily record transfers or chemical reactions that occur during drilling. NASA’s contamination strategy describes flight-like drilling tests in ultraclean Earth testbeds as one way to investigate these gaps.
Curiosity and Perseverance use different sample pathways

The distinction is about mission goals and sample pathways—not one rover having a universally contamination-proof drill. Curiosity prepares powder for instruments in the rover; Perseverance preserves cores in sealed containers.

How scientists judge whether Earth material affected a sample
Scientists interpret sample results alongside knowledge of hardware materials, potential vapor and particle transport, sample handling, and witness-tube records. Each line of evidence helps identify plausible sources, but none alone establishes that every contaminant has been eliminated. A witness tube may reveal material present in the rover environment while still missing a transfer or reaction specific to drilling a rock.
NASA has not published a numerical probability that a Mars rover’s sampling is contamination-free in the sources cited here. The development and drilling-test figures reported for Curiosity are engineering-history figures, not contamination statistics.
