It does not move Start independently or let you place it anywhere you choose. If selecting Left appears to do nothing, Microsoft’s instructions establish the setting’s intended behavior but do not identify a universal cause for that symptom.
What Taskbar alignment actually changes
The control aligns the taskbar icons. Start is part of that arrangement, so it moves with the other icons rather than acting as a separately positioned button. Microsoft describes the choices as Center or Left, and its Start menu guidance identifies this setting as the way to move Start to the side of the taskbar.
That means Windows’ built-in control does not offer arbitrary positioning, a separate Start-only position, or right alignment. Microsoft’s Taskbar customization instructions and Start menu instructions describe the available behavior.
How to change the alignment
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Open Taskbar alignment and choose Left or Center.

Left alignment is not moving the taskbar to the left edge
Left means that the icons line up on the left side of the taskbar along the bottom of the screen. It does not move the taskbar itself to the display’s left edge. Microsoft’s taskbar guidance says Windows 11 positions the taskbar at the bottom and does not document a built-in setting to move it to the top or side.
If selecting Left appears to make no difference
The documented instructions explain the intended setting, but they do not diagnose why a particular PC may appear unchanged. Check that you changed Taskbar alignment under Taskbar behaviors and that the selected option is Left. Then compare the Start button and other taskbar icons: the setting concerns the icon arrangement, not Start alone.

If the display still looks unchanged, the available official guidance does not establish one universal cause or guaranteed fix. The relevant details for diagnosing a specific case are what changed on screen and which Windows interface and version the PC is using. Avoid assuming that restarting a process, editing the registry, or installing a third-party utility is required; those are not remedies established by Microsoft’s instructions for this symptom.
