Android Auto does not require every permission for every feature. Google documents permissions that may support specific functions: location for navigation, contacts and SMS for messaging, and microphone for calls. You can review or deny access in Android settings, but the feature linked to that access may be limited. What changes can vary by phone, Android version, Google Play services version, car, and connection type.
Android Auto permissions and what they affect
Google describes these permissions as access that Google Play services for device connections may use for particular features. That is not a universal checklist requiring every permission for every Android Auto session. The documented roles are summarized below; the precise effect of denying access is not specified for every device or feature.

These permission roles come from Google’s description of Google Play services for device connections. Permissions are distinct from system connection settings such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
Which permissions can you disable?
You can deny permissions you do not want an app or service to use. The practical choice is whether to give up the feature associated with that access. For example, if you do not use Android Auto to read or send messages, you may choose to deny SMS access; if you rely on navigation, keep location available and adjust its scope instead of denying it outright.

- Navigation: Keep location access if you use location-dependent navigation. Android may let you grant access only while using an app, ask each time, or deny it; some devices also offer a precise-location toggle.
- Contact-based calling: Denying contacts may affect contact names or selection. It is separate from microphone access.
- Messages: Denying SMS means Android Auto may not be able to read, view, or send messages through the documented permission path.
- Calls and voice: Denying microphone access can affect interactions that need the phone’s microphone, but does not itself establish whether car audio can route over Bluetooth.
- Phone and nearby devices: Their documented roles are narrower than a blanket requirement for Android Auto. You can review them, but the exact effect of denial depends on how your phone and connected devices use them.
How to check or change Android Auto access
- Open Settings > Apps, select Android Auto or, if shown, Google Play services, then tap Permissions. The screen lists permissions as allowed or denied.
- Or open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, choose a permission type, and inspect which apps have access.
- For location, choose an available access level such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. If offered, turn off precise location while leaving location access enabled.
- Change one permission at a time, then check the feature you care about while parked. If a feature stops behaving as expected, return to the same screen and restore the permission.
Android notes that menu labels and steps can vary by device and software version. If a path differs, search Settings for “Permissions” or “Permission manager,” or consult your phone maker. See Google’s guides to changing app permissions and managing location permissions.
Wireless setup settings are not the same as app permissions
For wireless setup, Google recommends turning on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services; Bluetooth pairing is required the first time you connect wirelessly. That is setup and connectivity guidance, not proof that each setting or app permission must remain enabled permanently for every Android Auto use. Wired and wireless setup requirements are separate from the permission choices above. Google’s setup information describes wired use with Android 9.0 or newer, a compatible phone and car, an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable. Its setup guidance for wireless use includes 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and Android version requirements. Check Google’s current requirements for your connection type because they can change.

Google documents the kinds of features permissions may support, but does not provide a universal per-device matrix of what breaks after each permission is denied. Android version, phone maker, Google Play services version, vehicle, and wired or wireless connection can all affect observed behavior. Treat the permission descriptions as a guide to the access involved, then verify the particular feature on your setup.
