WizTree and Windows Storage Settings can show different amounts because they measure and group disk use differently. First check that you are comparing the same drive and the same kind of usage; if the gap remains, NTFS metadata, reserved space, hard links, or files the scan cannot account for may explain it.

What the two numbers actually measure

In WizTree, Size is a file’s logical size, while Allocated is the disk space assigned to store it. Allocation is rounded to the filesystem’s units (clusters), so a small file can occupy more disk space than its logical size. Compression can have the opposite effect: a compressed file may use less allocated space than its listed size. These figures are not interchangeable. WizTree’s FAQ explains the distinction.

Windows Storage Settings is a category view, with buckets such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. Those categories do not simply reproduce the sum of ordinary files shown in WizTree. Microsoft describes the Storage feature for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Storage settings support page.

Why WizTree’s file total can be below Windows’ used-space figure

Not all volume usage appears as an ordinary file in a scan. WizTree says NTFS data such as directory indexes and file security information consumes space even when it is not listed as a regular file. As a result, the allocated total of listed files will almost always be somewhat below Windows’ “Space Used” figure; the size of the gap depends on the volume and should not be assumed in advance.

Windows also reserves storage for temporary files, caches, and other files. Microsoft says Windows may clear reserved storage when space is low so updates and other processes can use it. Reserved storage is therefore part of the broader accounting Windows presents, rather than necessarily a file that WizTree can identify in a folder listing.

A WizTree release note introduced a display of “Reserved Space” for NTFS volumes and said it accounted for most of the difference between WizTree’s allocated-space total and Windows’ used-space report in that release. The note also points to other NTFS data, including directory indexes, as part of the residual. This is version-specific context, not a guarantee that the same item explains a difference on every current installation. WizTree’s release notes document the feature history.

Other causes of an apparent mismatch

  • Hard links: NTFS can let more than one path refer to a single file on the same volume. The file’s data is shared, not duplicated merely because it has multiple paths. WizTree’s release notes say it counts hard-linked data once in totals and that administrator rights are required to detect hard links on NTFS. Microsoft explains the filesystem behavior in Hard Links and Junctions.
  • Access restrictions: Protected or inaccessible files can affect what a directory-based view can enumerate or attribute. Permissions and scan mode matter when interpreting an apparent folder total.
  • Alternate data streams and metadata: NTFS can store data and filesystem information that is not represented as a conventional file in a folder listing.
  • Junctions and mount points: Reparse points can make paths lead elsewhere, complicating a comparison between folder totals and volume totals.
  • Filesystem problems or metadata growth: Microsoft’s NTFS troubleshooting guidance lists corruption and metadata allocation among possible causes of allocation discrepancies. That article is explicitly scoped to Windows Server 2003, so treat it as a catalog of NTFS concepts, not as current Windows 10/11 step-by-step advice. Microsoft’s NTFS volume disk-space troubleshooting article also describes read-only chkdsk output as a way to inspect volume statistics, including system and index allocation.

Compare the same drive and scope first

  1. Confirm the volume. Compare the same drive letter or volume in both Windows Storage and WizTree.
  2. Make sure WizTree is scanning the whole volume. A selected folder, filtered view, or partial scan is not comparable to a Windows category total for the drive.
  3. Choose the relevant WizTree measure. Use Allocated when comparing disk space used, rather than treating the Size column as a disk-usage total.
  4. Check scan access and hard-link handling. For NTFS, WizTree’s high-speed scan uses direct MFT access. Its release notes specify that hard links are detected only when WizTree runs with administrator rights. The WizTree product page describes its MFT-based scanning and file/folder analysis.
  5. Compare volume-level used and free space. If the gap is still substantial, investigate filesystem-managed usage rather than assuming a listed folder should account for every byte.

Which number should you trust?

If you want to know… Use this view What it tells you
Which broad types of storage are in use Windows Settings > System > Storage Category totals such as apps, temporary files, and System & reserved.
Which visible files and folders are large WizTree A file- and folder-oriented view; check whether you are reading Size or Allocated.
Why volume totals do not match a file listing Volume-level usage and filesystem diagnostics Can help identify reserved space, NTFS metadata, inaccessible data, or other filesystem-managed allocation.

Neither display is automatically “wrong”: each answers a different question. A treemap is useful for locating large visible files and folders, while Windows’ categories describe broader classes of use. Avoid deleting an unfamiliar system file solely because it appears large in WizTree. For a substantial unexplained discrepancy, useful details to gather are your Windows version, filesystem, WizTree version, the exact figures and columns compared, and whether WizTree scanned the whole drive or just a folder.
