If your Android phone became slow after an update, the timing is a useful clue—not proof that the update caused it. Record what is slow, check storage and pending updates, then compare the same tasks in Safe mode. Those steps can help distinguish a downloaded-app problem from a broader device issue.
Start with a clear baseline
Before changing settings, note when the slowdown began and what changed around that time. Android version, security update, and Google Play system update details are available in Settings, though the exact labels and paths vary by device. Google’s instructions for finding these details are in its Android version and update help.
- Record the update date and version if available.
- Identify which tasks lag: unlocking, opening apps, typing, scrolling, using the camera, or network tasks.
- Note whether the phone feels warm and whether the slowdown is constant or limited to certain apps.
- Compare the affected app with other apps, and note whether a restart changes the symptom.
This is an observation checklist, not a formal benchmark. Keeping track of changes—including recent app updates—helps avoid blaming the system update for a problem with another cause.
Run the low-risk checks first
Make one change at a time and check whether the same task improves. Google recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step, checking for system and app updates, and reviewing available storage. Settings paths differ among manufacturers; use the search field in Settings if a label does not match.

- Restart the phone. Test the tasks you recorded before moving on.
- Check free storage. Google says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” Review storage in Settings and free space if you are below that threshold. The guidance is in Google’s instructions for speeding up a slow Android device.
- Check for a system update. Look in Settings for Software update, System update, or a similarly named option. Follow the phone maker’s instructions for your model.
- Update apps. In Google Play, open your profile menu and choose Manage apps & device to check for available updates. Test again after updating.
- Close apps you are not using and retest. If just one app is slow, focus on that app rather than treating the whole phone as affected.
Google’s broader troubleshooting guidance is available in Speed up a slow Android device. Avoid changing several things at once: if the symptom shifts, you want to know which change came just before it.
Use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. It is a useful comparison: repeat the same tasks that lagged in normal mode and see whether the symptom still occurs. The exact way to enter or leave Safe mode varies by manufacturer, so follow the support steps for your model. Google’s Safe mode instructions also note that widgets may be removed from the home screen while the phone is in Safe mode.

- If the slowdown stops in Safe mode: A downloaded app is a likely contributor. Exit Safe mode, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, restart, and retest after each removal.
- If the slowdown remains: A downloaded app is less likely. Continue with the system and manufacturer troubleshooting steps rather than concluding that the update is responsible.
Safe mode narrows the possibilities; it does not identify a specific cause by itself. If you remove an app that was responsible and later reinstall it, the problem may return.
Allow for post-update work, but do not assume every symptom is normal
Some support guidance describes temporary activity after an update, but the timing depends on the device, software version, and symptom. Battery optimization timelines should not be treated as a general guarantee about lag.

These are manufacturer support observations for the named devices and symptoms, not controlled measurements across Android phones. No universal waiting period establishes that a persistent slowdown is harmless. If performance is still poor after the checks above, use the maker’s model-specific support steps.
Escalate persistent or severe problems
If the phone remains slow after a restart, storage checks, available updates, and Safe-mode comparison, contact the manufacturer or carrier for guidance specific to the model. Xiaomi’s Mi 10T support page, for example, advises checking for third-party theme, font, security or optimizer, battery-manager, and launcher apps, and recommends an official service center if a hardware fault is suspected. Do not wait out a settling period if the phone becomes severely hot, repeatedly crashes or reboots, or shows swelling or another safety concern. Google notes that heat can accelerate battery drain and damage the battery; keep the device cool and seek manufacturer support promptly. Follow the maker’s device-specific safety advice. A factory reset is advanced troubleshooting, not a first test. It removes data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up the phone before considering it, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. Google’s factory-reset guidance explains the consequences and preparation. If a downloaded app caused the problem, reinstalling it may bring the issue back.

Do not try a generic Android rollback procedure: the available process and risks depend on the device, and these support sources do not establish a cross-brand downgrade method. Ask the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
