To lower a gas-heated home’s costs, start by reducing avoidable heat loss: use a reasonable thermostat setback when the home is empty or everyone is asleep, check the furnace filter, and seal accessible drafts. If rooms stay unevenly warm or the house has persistent drafts, an energy assessment can help identify whether insulation, ductwork, or equipment needs attention. Your bill also reflects local delivery charges, taxes, fees, and rate rules—not just the price of natural gas.
Start with your thermostat and furnace filter
Use a schedule that fits the household
Turning the thermostat down when the home is unoccupied or people are sleeping can reduce heating demand. You do not need a smart thermostat to try this: a manual adjustment or programmable schedule can work. Choose settings that remain comfortable and appropriate for everyone in the home rather than relying on one temperature recommendation for every household. A smart thermostat can automate changes, but check that it is compatible with your heating system before buying one.
Check the filter
For a forced-air furnace, inspect the filter monthly during periods of heavy use. Replace it when it is dirty and at least every three months, following ENERGY STAR’s guidance. Use the size and type specified for your equipment; a filter that does not fit or meet the equipment requirements can interfere with proper operation.
Find and seal drafts safely
Use weatherstripping on moving parts
Drafts at doors and operable windows may be reduced with weatherstripping. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes it from caulk: weatherstripping is generally for components that move, such as doors and windows that open.

Use caulk on fixed gaps
Caulk is generally suited to cracks between stationary components, such as fixed frames and trim. Do not seal combustion-air openings, appliance vents, or clearances required by heating equipment. If you are unsure whether an opening is intentional, ask a qualified professional before covering it.
Caulking and weatherstripping can address obvious leaks, but a home energy professional can help find less visible air leakage and determine whether insulation is inadequate. An assessment is especially useful when the home has persistent drafts, a cold attic, or rooms that remain much colder than others.

Never place towels or any objects on top of the heater to prevent overheating and ensure safe, reliable performance
Assess insulation and ducts before replacing the furnace
Air sealing and insulation address heat loss through the home’s shell, while duct work addresses heat lost as warm air travels through a forced-air system. The right priority depends on what is actually underperforming in your home; national savings estimates cannot predict an individual household’s result.
- Insulation and air sealing: EPA’s estimate, presented through ENERGY STAR, is average savings of 15% on heating and cooling costs—or 11% on total energy costs—for the package it describes. These are modeled averages, not guaranteed savings for a particular home. See ENERGY STAR’s air sealing and insulation guidance.
- Ducts: For forced-air systems, accessible ducts in an attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage may merit attention. ENERGY STAR says sealing and insulating ducts can improve heating and cooling system efficiency by as much as 20%; “up to” is a maximum estimate, not a typical result or a promise. See ENERGY STAR’s heating and cooling guidance.
If your current furnace is old, struggling to keep rooms comfortable, or due for major repairs, ask a qualified HVAC contractor to evaluate it before deciding on replacement. Sealing leaks or improving insulation may be the better first investment if the house is losing heat faster than the system can deliver it. Equipment replacement requires professional sizing and installation.

Schedule professional heating-system maintenance
ENERGY STAR recommends an annual professional checkup for heating equipment in the fall. A qualified technician can inspect heating-specific components such as gas connections, burner combustion, and the heat exchanger—checks that should not be treated as do-it-yourself maintenance. See ENERGY STAR’s maintenance guidance.
Consider a smart thermostat only if it suits your system
A smart thermostat is optional: changing a manual thermostat or using a programmable schedule may meet the same basic need. ENERGY STAR estimates about $100 in annual savings for some homes with high heating and cooling bills or substantial daytime vacancy. That estimate does not apply to every household. Check compatibility with your equipment and whether your utility offers a rebate before purchasing. See ENERGY STAR’s certified connected thermostats information.

Understand what drives the gas bill
The cost of natural gas is only one part of a delivered household bill. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says transmission and distribution costs, taxes and fees, state regulation, and the availability of competing suppliers also affect what consumers pay. Rates and supplier-choice programs differ by location, so a national trend cannot tell you what your utility will charge. See the EIA’s Natural gas prices explainer, last updated December 21, 2023.
National winter outlooks are time-specific forecasts, not current local rate estimates. EIA’s October 15, 2025 outlook expected gas-heated households to pay about the same to heat their homes in winter 2025–26 as in the previous winter. Its December 15, 2025 update raised estimated household energy expenditures for that winter as it anticipated colder weather and higher retail-price forecasts, especially for natural gas and propane. Those forecasts describe winter 2025–26 and should not be used as a prediction for a later winter. Check your current bill and utility notices for local information. See the EIA’s October 2025 winter energy outlook and December 2025 update.

Look for bill assistance if heating costs are unaffordable
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) distributes funds to states to help eligible households pay heating bills. The Weatherization Assistance Program supports efficiency improvements for eligible low-income households. Eligibility and local offerings vary. Contact your state public utility or service commission and your gas utility to ask about current assistance, payment arrangements, and efficiency programs. The EIA’s natural gas prices explainer describes these programs.
