The example is the Lite configuration of the 68k-MBC, a homebrew single-board computer built around a 68008 processor. Its three main chips are the CPU, SRAM and a PIC microcontroller, which substitutes for ROM and emulates I/O. The compact design makes a capable retrocomputing and software-experimentation platform, but its memory and I/O are deliberately limited.
What does “three ICs” mean?
It refers to the Lite build of the 68k-MBC—not every version or photograph of the board. The builder, Just4Fun, describes the project as “an easy to build 68008 CPU SBC (Single Board Computer), using only easy to find TH parts.” That is the builder’s description, not an independent assessment of how easy a particular build will be. The 68008 runs the software, SRAM supplies working memory, and the PIC microcontroller takes on functions typically handled by ROM and I/O hardware. The result is a small but functional 68k-based computer rather than a circuit that only demonstrates a processor.
What can the 68k-MBC Lite do?
Run operating-system software and standalone programs
The project supports CP/M-68K as well as standalone executables. Its files also include GCC cross-compiler materials and 68000 IDE installation files, providing a documented route for software development. Their presence does not establish that a particular development workflow or application has been tested.

Connect to a serial terminal
Lite provides one usable serial port, so it can communicate through a serial terminal. The project also retains I2C for compatible documented expansions. It is a simple, narrow I/O set—not a modern desktop’s collection of built-in peripherals.
Add documented storage and peripherals
The builder documents optional microSD storage emulation and an RTC module. Other documented options include a 16-pin GPIO expander and a parallel-port adapter for a legacy parallel printer. These additions can extend what the system connects to, though availability and compatibility should be checked against the specific board and module before purchase or assembly. What are the Lite configuration’s limits?
Lite’s low chip count comes with concrete trade-offs. The builder’s documentation specifies a maximum of 512 KB RAM, one serial port, no CPU interrupt support, and I2C-only access on the AUX connector. Its RAM options are 128 KB or 512 KB; the 1024 KB option requires the Full configuration. Hackaday’s October 2, 2026 overview also identifies the 512 KB ceiling and single serial port.

Who is this computer for?
The 68k-MBC Lite is best understood as a compact homebrew 68k system for retrocomputing, learning and experimenting with software on an older architecture. It can run CP/M-68K and standalone programs, and the documented toolchain materials provide a development starting point. Its specifications do not establish modern desktop capability, measured performance or compatibility with particular applications.
