Follow the target repository’s rules—not a general assumption about open source. Read its contribution instructions and AI policy before you start. If it prohibits AI-generated code, do not submit generated code or conceal how it was produced. Instead, ask maintainers which kinds of human-authored contributions are welcome, then choose a small task you can explain and support.
Check the project’s actual policy first
There is no single AI rule for open-source projects. GitHub notes that maintainers may publish community expectations in a repository’s README, CONTRIBUTING file, or code of conduct. Start there, then follow links to any dedicated AI policy, issue templates, licensing requirements, and contribution instructions: GitHub: Adding a code of conduct to your project.
Read the wording closely. A policy may cover only generated code, or it may also regulate generated documentation, tests, issue reports, pull request descriptions, or interactions with developers. Check whether it distinguishes between using a tool for research or editing and submitting material produced by that tool. If the answer is unclear, ask through the project’s designated discussion channel before doing the work.
Policies change. Recheck the live policy immediately before contributing, and do not treat a rule from another project as permission.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What counts as an acceptable contribution?
If AI-generated code is prohibited, do not use it as submitted code. Ask maintainers what kinds of help are useful and permitted; possible options include investigating an existing issue, providing a reproducible bug report, correcting documentation, testing a fix, clarifying an issue, or answering a community question. None is automatically exempt: a project may regulate generated text and other project communications as well as code.
When you ask, keep the question specific: identify the task you have in mind and ask whether the project permits the tools or assistance you plan to use. If a task must be done without AI-generated material, do it within that boundary. If the rules do not clearly answer whether research, debugging, translation, spell-checking, or generated test cases are allowed, get clarification rather than assuming.

How project policies differ
Official policies illustrate why the repository’s own instructions matter. These examples are not a complete survey or universal rules:
| Project or organization | What its published policy says |
|---|---|
| GCC | Declines legally significant contributions that include or derive from LLM-generated content. Its policy allows maintainers to accept clearly marked legally insignificant generated content, and makes an exception for legally significant LLM-generated test cases. It requires an “Assisted-by:” tag for LLM-generated content and human submission and accountability. The policy page says it was last modified July 29, 2026: GCC contribution guidelines. |
| PROJ | Permits tool use with a human in the loop: contributors must read and review generated code or text before requesting review and remain accountable. It also bars agents from taking actions in project spaces without human approval: PROJ AI/LLM tool policy. |
| Modular | Permits tools under human direction and review, expects labels for substantial generated content, and asks for focused pull requests and contributor-written descriptions. Its guideline is to try to keep PRs under 100 lines whenever possible; that is Modular’s advice, not a general open-source limit: Modular AI policy. |
| LLVM | Requires transparency for substantial generated content and bars AI use to fix issues marked “good first issue,” which are intended as learning opportunities: LLVM AI tool policy. |
| Sphinx | Requires contributors to disclose whether and how they used AI, rejects undisclosed pull requests, expects contributors to understand and explain their code, and prohibits an AI agent from autonomously submitting a PR: Sphinx AI policy. |
| Linux Foundation | General guidance permits AI-generated content in Linux Foundation projects subject to contractual, licensing, and third-party rights checks, while allowing individual projects to set stricter rules: Linux Foundation generative AI guidance. |
| OpenInfra Foundation | Generally permits generated contributions subject to licensing and human review, describes “Generated-By:” and “Assisted-By” labels, and says its policy does not supersede project-specific requirements: OpenInfra Foundation AI policy. |
The practical lesson is to follow the policy for the repository you are contributing to. A disclosure label that one project requires may be unnecessary, insufficient, or contrary to another project’s instructions.

Choose work that is useful and reviewable
Begin with a real issue or a request from maintainers rather than a speculative, broad change. If a project labels some issues “good first issue,” check whether its policy restricts AI use on those tasks; LLVM, for example, does. Pick work you understand well enough to explain, test, and revise yourself.
Keep the change focused. A small correction tied to a confirmed need is easier to evaluate than a large proposal with unclear benefits. Modular advises small, focused PRs and recommends newcomers start with work they fully understand. PROJ states its “golden rule” this way: “a contribution should be worth more to the project than the time it takes to review it” (PROJ AI/LLM tool policy).

Before writing, make sure the project actually wants the proposed work. Before submitting, make sure your explanation describes the problem, the change, and how you checked it—without claiming tests or review you did not perform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle disclosure, authorship, and project communication correctly
Do not hide AI use or assume disclosure alone makes prohibited work acceptable. Follow the project’s exact requirements for permitted assistance, labels, attribution, and review. For example, Sphinx requires disclosure of whether and how AI was used and rejects undisclosed PRs. PROJ requires human review of generated material and recommends contributors write their own PR descriptions; it allows tools for translation or copy-editing as described in its policy.

Policies may cover more than the code in a patch. Sphinx’s policy extends to PR and issue descriptions and interactions with developers. PROJ prohibits agents from acting in project spaces without human approval. Submit and engage as the responsible human contributor: be ready to answer questions, make revisions yourself, and respect any restriction on automated activity.
Quick Recap
A practical contribution workflow
- Read the repository rules. Check the README, CONTRIBUTING file, code of conduct, issue templates, and any AI policy. Follow linked licensing and contribution requirements.
- Resolve uncertainty. Ask in the project’s preferred channel if the rules do not clearly cover the assistance or task you are considering. Wait for an answer before investing in work that might be disallowed.
- Pick a permitted need. Choose a confirmed issue or ask whether a human-authored reproduction, documentation change, test, localization task, issue clarification, or community support would help. Confirm that the activity and any tools used comply with the project’s rules.
- Keep the scope focused. Make a change small enough to understand, check, and explain. Avoid bundling unrelated improvements or opening a large speculative PR.
- Describe the work truthfully. Follow the project’s rules for AI disclosure, authorship, and PR descriptions. State what changed and how you checked it; do not imply that generated material or tests were human-authored or completed if they were not.
- Stay accountable after submission. Answer maintainer questions, revise the work yourself, and accept that maintainers decide whether it fits. Do not use an autonomous agent to open or comment on issues or PRs where project policy prohibits it.
