Check frame timing and drop counters while the problem occurs, then change only the setting or connection implicated by those measurements. This guide focuses on SteamVR and Meta PC-VR/Quest Link; menu names and diagnostics differ across headsets and runtimes.
Why are my VR games stuttering?
A VR headset needs a new frame in time for each display refresh. Meta documents a rendering budget of 13.9 ms at 72 Hz, 11.1 ms at 90 Hz, and 8.3 ms at 120 Hz. When an application misses that deadline, the compositor can redisplay an older frame and apply rotational reprojection. Repeated misses can appear as judder and add latency. Meta’s missed-frame documentation explains the sequence and its consequences.
Stuttering is not automatically a GPU problem. There are three broad places to investigate:
- Application rendering: The game takes too long to render a frame, often because CPU or GPU work exceeds the frame budget.
- Compositor or streaming: The application may render on time while the compositor, encoding, or PC-to-headset streaming path has trouble delivering frames.
- Connection or tracking: A loose physical connection or other link issue can interrupt PC-VR delivery. Network conditions may matter for wireless streaming, but the sources cited here do not establish a universal router fix.
GPU utilization by itself is not a reliable pass/fail test. Meta notes that GPU time can exceed the frame budget even when reported utilization is below 100%. Compare measured per-frame timings with the target refresh budget and use the platform’s dropped-frame counters.

How do I fix VR lag? Start by locating where it happens
Before changing settings, reproduce the stutter and note where it appears. This comparison narrows the path to investigate; no single symptom proves a particular cause.
- Only one game: Compare its settings and frame timings with another title or workload on the same headset and connection.
- Across PC-VR games, but not standalone play: Investigate PC rendering, the runtime, encoding, and the connection path.
- Across the dashboard and multiple titles: Check headset or PC software status, runtime/compositor timings, and the connection rather than assuming one game’s graphics settings are responsible.
- Only while streaming wirelessly: Look at the available streaming diagnostics and compare with a supported wired connection if you have one. Do not treat a router setting as a guaranteed fix without evidence for your headset and streaming app.
Why am I dropping frames in SteamVR or Quest Link?
SteamVR: inspect Frame Timing
- Open SteamVR > Settings > Performance.
- Enable Display Frame Timing.
- Reproduce the stutter and watch for timing spikes and dropped frames.
Steam Support says spikes probably relate to CPU performance and calls out high CPU temperatures and poor case airflow as possible performance problems. The graph helps identify when the issue occurs; it does not by itself prove which component needs an upgrade. Follow Steam’s VR performance troubleshooting steps for its additional checks.
Meta PC-VR/Quest Link: use Oculus Debug Tool
Open Oculus Debug Tool (ODT) from the Meta Horizon installation so it matches the installed distribution. Its Performance HUD includes views such as Performance Summary, Latency Timing, App Render Timing, Compositor Render Timing, ASW Stats, Oculus Link, Oculus Link Detail, and Network Guardian Info. Meta also documents an application frame-drop indicator and Link-related controls. The exact information shown depends on the selected HUD view.

Use separate application and compositor counters rather than treating all dropped frames as the same event. Meta’s PC Performance HUD distinguishes application drops, compositor drops, application CPU/GPU timings, and compositor timings. If the application is missing its budget, work on game rendering first. If its timing is within budget but stale frames continue, inspect CPU timing and compositor or Link diagnostics. See Meta’s PC performance tools documentation.

Compare timings with the refresh-rate budget
Use the headset’s active refresh rate, not a generic target. At Meta’s documented 72, 90, and 120 Hz rates, the respective budgets are 13.9, 11.1, and 8.3 ms per frame. Meta’s documentation illustrates a 72 Hz case with 18.05 ms of application GPU time against a 13.9 ms budget; that is an example, not a measurement of your PC.
In Meta’s guidance, application GPU time above budget points to a GPU rendering bottleneck. If GPU time is within budget while stale frames persist, the CPU is a likely bottleneck. Treat those readings as diagnostic clues and use the counters’ own labels: different overlays may define or group frame events differently.

Reduce graphics workload only when timing points to rendering
If application GPU time exceeds the budget, lower demanding in-game graphics settings or render resolution, then reproduce the same scene and compare timings. Change one item at a time so you can tell whether it helped. If CPU timing is the issue, lowering GPU-heavy graphics options may not address the bottleneck.
On supported Quest applications, Meta documents Dynamic Resolution, which can reduce render scale when dropped frames are detected. Availability depends on the device and application. Meta also notes that thermal pressure can dynamically reduce refresh rate, increasing the time available per frame.
A refresh setting is useful only if the system can sustain it. Meta’s developer guidance puts it plainly: “A smooth 72 Hz experience is better than a 90 Hz experience with frequent dropped frames.” The same guidance explains the frame budgets behind that trade-off.

Check PC, SteamVR, and physical connections
When timing spikes or SteamVR diagnostics point toward PC performance, Steam Support lists the following checks. Apply those relevant to your setup and retest rather than changing everything at once.
- Make sure the headset, link box (if used), and PC connections are secure.
- Disconnect unused USB devices and try another suitable USB port where applicable.
- Update the GPU driver.
- Return CPU and GPU overclocks to default while troubleshooting.
- Check CPU temperatures and case airflow.
- Review power configuration. Steam lists a high-performance power plan and, for NVIDIA systems, a maximum-performance setting; these controls and their trade-offs vary by computer.
- Check SteamVR tool-cache integrity using Steam’s troubleshooting instructions.
A cable or port check can help isolate a suspected physical connection problem. Steam’s advice supports checking connections and trying another USB port; it does not establish that replacing a cable will fix CPU/GPU frame-time overload. Confirm headset compatibility and cable requirements before trying an alternate Link cable.

If the problem occurs during Meta PC-VR streaming, inspect the ODT Link views and verify that the Meta Horizon Link PC app is current. ODT exposes codec, encoding resolution, dynamic bitrate, and bitrate controls. Meta warns that high bitrate values can cause instability, so do not assume that maximizing bitrate or encoding resolution is a general fix. Change one supported setting at a time and compare the diagnostics.

Software defects can also resemble a local performance problem. In a dated community notice, MetaStoreHelp’s community manager said a specific Horizon Link PC app streaming issue involving dropped frames and stuttering was fixed in version 85.0.0.239.552, released February 17. That notice concerns the identified incident only; it does not establish that the same issue is present now or that this is the current app version. Check the current app and status information rather than treating the historical fix as a universal solution. Read the notice about that Link incident.
When to compare wired and wireless play
If you have a supported choice, compare the same repeatable workload across standalone and PC-rendered play, or across wired Link and your headset’s supported wireless option. Keep the game, scene, and graphics settings as consistent as possible. Then compare application timing, compositor timing, drop counters, and any connection diagnostics available in your runtime. A change in one path is useful evidence for narrowing the cause, but a single comparison does not prove that a different runtime or connection method is generally better.
For wireless streaming, Meta ODT’s Network Guardian Info is a diagnostic view, not proof of a specific network cause. The official guidance cited here does not establish a current, platform-wide router channel, bitrate, or configuration recipe; use headset- and app-specific instructions for any network changes.
