Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Refactor a deep inheritance hierarchy by replacing only the links used for implementation reuse or independent behavior with focused collaborators. Keep inheritance where each edge represents a sound subtype contract, and preserve the same externally observable behavior as responsibilities move. The safest approach is incremental: map the hierarchy, identify the behavior and compatibility risks, migrate one branch at a time, and remove an inheritance edge only after its clients and overrides are accounted for.
What changes when you refactor inheritance into composition?
Refactoring changes a program’s internal structure without changing what users or calling code can observe. Martin Fowler defines it as “a change made to the internal structure of software to make it easier to understand and cheaper to modify without changing its observable behavior.” (Refactoring.com) The goal is therefore not to redesign behavior at the same time as the hierarchy: keep the public results and important side effects stable while changing who owns and supplies the implementation.
With inheritance, a class receives behavior and possibly state through its parent classes. With composition, it owns or is given another object that provides selected behavior. The consuming class calls that collaborator directly, and may expose forwarding methods where its own API still needs to offer the behavior. Fowler’s “Replace Superclass with Delegate” example turns a Stack that inherits from List into a stack that contains list storage instead. (Replace Superclass with Delegate)
This is a targeted refactoring, not a rule to eliminate inheritance. For each edge, ask whether it promises that a child can safely be used wherever its parent is expected, or merely shares implementation. Retain the first when substitutability is intentional; investigate replacing the second.

Map the hierarchy and identify what each edge means
Before editing, draw the actual chain and record the contribution of every level. Do not rely on class names or a diagram alone: trace the calls and construction paths that make the hierarchy work.
- Behavior: methods introduced, overridden, or called through
super; hooks and callbacks; and side effects. - State: fields and invariants, including state inherited indirectly from a grandparent.
- Construction and lifecycle: superclass constructors, initialization order, and assumptions about an object’s state while it is being created.
- Visibility and API: public and protected members, as well as clients that accept a descendant as its parent type or access inherited members.
- Runtime assumptions: synchronization, framework reflection, serialization, and other code that may depend on the class hierarchy.
Then classify each inheritance edge. A meaningful subtype contract is a reason to keep the edge; reuse of a few methods or a separate axis of behavior is a reason to consider a collaborator. Deep hierarchies can make relationships harder to follow, modification harder, and extension more prone to breakage, but their depth alone does not prove a particular edge is wrong. Choose the collaborator and its contract
Define the smallest behavior contract the consuming class actually needs. A collaborator should own a coherent responsibility, not become a renamed base class that collects every inherited method and field. Move state together with the operations and invariants that govern it; copying fields without their rules can change behavior.
| Approach | Use it when | Compatibility and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Delegate or composition | The class needs selected behavior or state but should not expose the full parent contract. | Explicit calls and any needed forwarding methods replace inherited access. The collaborator boundary can narrow the API, but forwarding adds code to maintain. |
| Strategy | One algorithm or policy varies independently and should not require a subclass for each variation. | Behavior can be supplied as a focused policy; decide whether it must be replaceable at runtime or only chosen during construction. |
| Decorator | Optional behavior should wrap an object while preserving a common interface. | Wrapping supports layered behavior, but callers and constructors must accommodate the wrapper structure. |
| Retain inheritance | The child is intentionally usable as the parent and that relationship is part of the API. | Preserves subtype use and inherited interface, but retains the coupling and assumptions of the hierarchy. |
Strategy and Decorator are among the alternatives suggested for reducing complex inheritance. (Clean Code Cookbook, Chapter 9) There is no universally simpler or faster choice established here: weigh behavior preservation, subtype and API compatibility, runtime replaceability, forwarding complexity, and the language and tools in use.

Choose whether the collaborator is fixed when the object is constructed or can vary later. Constructor injection or another explicit injection mechanism is useful when runtime variation or substituting a collaborator in tests matters. If behavior should never vary for an instance, a fixed collaborator may be enough. In either case, keep its contract limited to what the consumer needs.
Migrate one branch at a time
- Pick a leaf or branch with a clear boundary. Avoid changing the entire hierarchy in one step. Identify its clients, overrides, construction sites, and observable behavior before modifying it.
- Introduce the collaborator. Give it the relevant state and operations, preserving their invariants. Make the dependency explicit through construction or the project’s existing injection pattern.
- Redirect the implementation. Replace calls that relied on inherited implementation with calls to the collaborator. Add forwarding methods only where the class should continue to expose the corresponding public behavior.
- Check semantics before removing the parent. Trace virtual calls, constructor behavior, protected access, synchronization, and framework assumptions (details below). Account for every client that depends on the old type or inherited state.
- Compare behavior and review the API. Compile and run relevant regression checks after each step. Characterization tests can capture existing outputs and side effects before changes; they are practical workflow advice for preserving behavior, not a prescribed test suite from Fowler’s definition.
- Remove the inheritance edge only when its dependencies are migrated. Update clients, overrides, and construction sites first. Then review the resulting API and generated changes, and run the relevant checks again.
Watch for open recursion and lifecycle changes
A particularly subtle risk is open recursion: a superclass method calls an overridable method on this. In the original hierarchy, dynamic dispatch may reach a subclass override. If that superclass implementation moves into a separate collaborator, its call on the collaborator may no longer reach the former subclass method. The resulting code can compile while changing behavior. The FernUniversität in Hagen’s Java-oriented refactoring guidance calls out this late-bound call hazard and also highlights compatibility concerns around subtype use, fields, protected members, constructors, and synchronization. Before extracting behavior, inspect for:
- Superclass methods that invoke overridable methods on
this, and subclass overrides those calls formerly reached. - Calls to
superwhose ordering or effects must be preserved. - Constructor-time calls to overridable methods, initialization order, and subclass assumptions about partially initialized state.
- Protected fields or methods used by descendants, plus clients that rely on inherited public members.
- Synchronized methods or blocks whose locking behavior could change when operations move to a different object.
- Framework reflection, serialization, or registration logic that inspects or depends on the inheritance tree.
These are inspection prompts, not universal Java rules for every language. The precise risks depend on the language, framework, and actual call graph; the cited Hagen guidance is Java-oriented.

IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 documents a “Replace inheritance with delegation” refactoring that removes a class from the hierarchy, creates a private inner class inheriting from the former superclass or interface, and routes selected parent methods through that inner class. Its workflow includes previewing and applying the changes. (IntelliJ IDEA: Replace inheritance with delegation)

The tool’s generated structure is one IDE’s behavior, not a language-independent guarantee or proof that the new design is semantically safe. Select only the methods that belong in the delegated contract, inspect the preview, and manually check virtual dispatch, state, constructors, and compatibility. The exact controls and results may differ in other IDEs or versions.
Decide whether the refactoring succeeded
The hierarchy is improved when each remaining inheritance link has a defensible subtype meaning, while implementation reuse or independently varying behavior lives behind focused collaborator contracts. The migration is complete only when callers still observe the intended behavior and no unreviewed client, override, or lifecycle assumption depends on the removed edge. Without a specified language, framework, or hierarchy, there is no safe universal code recipe: apply the workflow to the actual call graph and compatibility requirements.
