Use object-oriented programming (OOP) when an application has stateful entities with responsibilities that belong together, or when a small interface should protect important rules. For a short, closed algorithm that transforms simple data, direct functions or procedural code may be easier to understand. Many projects benefit from both: use objects at stateful boundaries and simpler transformations for internal computation.
What OOP is—and what it is not
OOP organizes a program around objects and types. An object exposes operations through a public interface, while its implementation and state can remain behind that interface. This can help make responsibilities and rules visible: callers use an operation without needing to manipulate an object’s internals directly.
That does not mean every value needs a class, or that inheritance is the default way to reuse code. Object-oriented design is one option for organizing a system. Bertrand Meyer’s discussion of object-oriented and functional architecture describes interfaces, contracts, types, classes, and inheritance as design mechanisms, not guaranteed routes to reuse, reliability, or easier change. Read Meyer’s paper.
When OOP is a good fit
- State and behavior belong together. A long-lived entity has state that changes over time, and its behavior should enforce rules about those changes.
- Important invariants need protection. A small public interface can prevent callers from putting an object into an invalid state by changing its fields directly.
- Implementations need a shared contract. If different implementations should be usable through the same interface, a clearly defined contract can make that substitution easier to reason about.
- Responsibilities are easier to find on an object. If developers can understand a feature by locating the object responsible for it, object organization may make the code easier to navigate.
These are reasons to consider OOP, not promises that adding classes will automatically make a system modular or maintainable. The design still has to keep responsibilities clear and changes local. Martin Fowler’s discussion of modular structure makes the broader point that a good structure helps developers understand a small part of a system when making changes; that is a modularity principle, not evidence that OOP alone guarantees modularity. See Fowler’s discussion.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When not to use OOP
For a closed algorithm that takes simple input and produces simple output, a direct function or sequence of procedural steps may express the work more clearly than a class hierarchy. The same applies when the main job is transforming values or collections and mutable object state would make the flow harder to trace.
- Do not create a class merely to wrap a value or a function if the wrapper adds no meaningful responsibility or rule.
- Avoid indirection or a hierarchy when the algorithm has one straightforward path and no useful need for interchangeable implementations.
- When performance is important, compare implementations on the actual workload instead of assuming either paradigm is faster. A ScienceDirect abstract cautions against OOP for closed algorithms over simple data and time-critical applications, but the evidence available there is old and limited; treat time-critical work as a reason to measure, not as a universal rule. View the abstract.
How functional and procedural styles fit in
Functional programming emphasizes composing functions that transform values. A pure function is self-contained and stateless: the same input yields the same result without changing external state. That can make individual transformations easier to compose, test, debug, and refactor.

OOP and functional techniques are not mutually exclusive. Microsoft Learn notes that general-purpose languages can support multiple paradigms and that programs often combine them; its comparison discusses functional composition alongside languages designed primarily for imperative programming, including C#, Visual Basic, C++, and Java. Read Microsoft Learn’s comparison. A system can use objects where state and responsibilities need boundaries, then use pure functions for calculations and transformations inside those boundaries. O’Reilly’s chapter preview also discusses ideas shared across the paradigms.
A practical way to choose
Compare viable designs against the code you expect to build and change. There is no universal winner: readability depends on the problem, the language, the existing code, and the team’s familiarity.

- Identify the likely changes. Ask whether change is more likely to add behavior to existing entities or introduce new kinds of data. Consider which organization makes the expected change easier to implement without scattering edits.
- Locate state and invariants. Decide whether state needs a boundary that controls valid changes, or whether passing values explicitly would make behavior easier to follow.
- Trace a typical operation. See whether a reader can locate the relevant behavior, follow the execution path, and understand where errors arise without navigating unnecessary layers.
- Consider isolated testing. Check whether the design makes important behavior easy to exercise on its own, without unrelated state or dependencies obscuring the result.
- Match the codebase and team. Account for language idioms, existing architecture, and what the people maintaining the code can read comfortably.
- Measure real performance needs. If runtime or resource use matters, test representative inputs and workloads. Do not infer a performance outcome from the paradigm label alone.
Use a hybrid when the problem calls for one
A common practical choice is to use objects for stateful domain entities or integration boundaries and functions for stateless calculations and transformations. Keep the decision local to the module: a project does not have to adopt one paradigm everywhere. The useful design is the one that makes responsibilities, state changes, and execution understandable for the code that actually exists.
Evidence from a 2025 preprint comparing Kotlin and Scala implementations of a digital-wallet proof of concept is limited to that case study’s selected architectural characteristics, author self-assessment, and developer survey. It is not a general benchmark or proof that one paradigm wins across projects. Read the preprint.
