A list comprehension builds and returns a complete list; a generator expression returns an iterator that produces values as they are requested. Generators can avoid storing all transformed results at once, but they are not automatically faster. Choose a list when you need to retain, index, or reuse results; choose a generator when a consumer can process them in one pass.
What each expression returns
These forms may look similar, but they create different objects:
[f(x) for x in items]evaluates the comprehension and returns a list containing its results.(f(x) for x in items)returns a generator iterator. It computes each result as iteration requests it.
For example, squares = [x * x for x in values] leaves all the squares in a list. With squares = (x * x for x in values), the variable refers to an iterator that yields squares as it is consumed. The distinction is about both timing and storage: a list is already materialized, while a generator supplies values incrementally. See the Python language reference for generator expressions.
How evaluation timing works
A list comprehension computes its results as it builds the list. A generator expression delays computing yielded results until the iterator is asked for them. There is one important exception: the iterable expression in the leftmost for clause is evaluated immediately when the generator expression is created. The remaining expressions are evaluated as values are requested, as described in the Python language reference.

This difference matters if evaluating the iterable has effects or can fail. In (transform(x) for x in get_items()), the call to get_items() happens when the generator expression is defined; calls to transform(x) happen during iteration.
Which uses less memory?
A generator can avoid the extra memory needed to hold a temporary list of every transformed result, provided the consumer processes results incrementally. For example, sum(x * x for x in values) can feed each square into sum without first building a list. By contrast, sum([x * x for x in values]) constructs that intermediate list before summing it.

This does not eliminate the memory used by values itself, and a consumer may retain results in its own data structures. The potential saving is specifically the temporary collection of transformed outputs—not all memory associated with the operation.
Which is faster?
There is no universal speed winner. Total time depends on the input, the work performed for each item, how the result is consumed, and the Python implementation and version. A generator’s incremental behavior can be useful for large or unbounded inputs, but laziness alone does not prove that an operation will run faster.

PEP 289 discusses historical timing: after list comprehensions were optimized in Python 2.4, its reported experience was that performance was roughly comparable for small to mid-sized datasets, while generators tended to do better as data volume grew. That is historical, qualitative guidance from the proposal, not a current benchmark or a guarantee for every workload.
Version also matters. PEP 709 proposes inlining list, dictionary, and set comprehensions in CPython and says generator expressions were not inlined by that proposal. Do not assume a performance conclusion from one Python version or implementation applies to another.

Choose based on how you will use the result

Generators are ordinarily single-pass: after an iterator has been consumed, it does not recreate the earlier values. If later code needs to index or revisit those values, use a list or deliberately materialize the generator, for example with list(generator).
How to compare performance fairly
When speed matters, compare the complete operation rather than timing expression creation alone. A generator may defer work until its consumer runs, so a timing that stops at creation omits the work that produces its values. Use the same input and consumer for both versions, on the Python build and version used by the application.

- Write both alternatives with the same transformation and the same downstream operation.
- Measure total elapsed time through completion of that consumer, using Python’s
timeitdocumentation for small snippets. - If memory is the concern, assess peak memory separately; elapsed-time measurements do not establish memory use.
- For broader application performance questions, consult Python’s profiling documentation and measure the actual workload.
For results that can be reused, include that reuse in the comparison: building a list has an upfront cost, but repeated traversal does not require regenerating values. For a one-pass consumer, include the full consumption in the measurement.
