Consider Lockdown Mode if you have a credible reason to believe you could be personally targeted by highly sophisticated spyware—and can accept limits to some everyday features.
How standard security and Lockdown Mode differ
These options address different threat levels. Standard security is the practical baseline for routine risks. Lockdown Mode is an optional, extreme protection intended for the small number of people who may be personally targeted by sophisticated digital attacks, including mercenary spyware. Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature.
Lockdown Mode reduces potential attack paths by restricting selected apps, websites, and features. It does not guarantee that a device cannot be compromised, and it does not replace standard security practices. Apple describes the mode as a security tradeoff that can reduce functionality or performance.

What Lockdown Mode limits
The exact behavior depends on the operating-system version. Apple’s current guidance describes restrictions across messaging, browsing, calls and invitations, connectivity, Photos, and device management. Check Apple’s About Lockdown Mode page for the details that apply to your software version.

- Messages: Most attachment types are blocked, with some exceptions for images, video, and audio. Link previews are removed.
- Web browsing: Some complex web technologies are restricted, which can affect how certain sites work.
- FaceTime and invitations: Incoming FaceTime calls from people you have not contacted recently are blocked. Invitations to certain Apple services may be limited.
- Photos: Shared Albums are removed from Photos while the mode is enabled.
- Connectivity: Behavior changes for some non-secure Wi-Fi connections and older cellular networks. A wired connection to an accessory or computer requires the iPhone to be unlocked.
- Management: You cannot install new configuration profiles or enroll in mobile device management while the mode is enabled.
Phone calls, plain-text messages, and emergency features such as SOS emergency calls continue to work. Apple’s Lockdown Mode security overview also groups possible tradeoffs across background services, connectivity, FaceTime, Game Center, Mail, Messages, Photos, Safari, System Settings, and WebKit.
Build a strong standard-security baseline
Apple recommends these protections for all users. Lockdown Mode is an additional option for a narrower threat model, not a substitute for them.

- Install software updates when they are available.
- Protect the iPhone with a passcode and Face ID or Touch ID.
- Use a strong Apple Account password and turn on two-factor authentication.
- Turn on Stolen Device Protection.
- Install apps from the App Store.
- Use strong, unique passwords or passkeys for online accounts.
- Avoid links and attachments from unknown senders.

When to consider Lockdown Mode
Consider it if your work, public profile, or circumstances give you a credible reason to think you could be individually targeted by sophisticated digital attacks. The feature is not a routine upgrade that everyone needs: its restrictions are designed to reduce certain attack paths, and they can interfere with normal use.

If Apple sends you a threat notification, take it seriously and follow the instructions in the notification. Apple strongly recommends that notified users seek expert assistance; it names Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline as one example. A notification does not identify a specific attacker or geographic region, so do not infer who is responsible from the alert alone. Apple also says a person with good reason to believe they are targeted can enable Lockdown Mode even without receiving a notification.

Update your devices first. Apple lists support for iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, watchOS 10 or later, and macOS Ventura or later. It notes additional protections beginning with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS Sonoma; for the most complete protection, Apple recommends installing the latest software.

- On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode and review the information shown.
- Confirm with Turn On & Restart, then enter your passcode.
- Enable Lockdown Mode separately on each supported iPad and Mac you use. It turns on automatically for a paired supported Apple Watch.
