For most browser-based 3D effects built from scenes, meshes, materials, lighting and animation, Three.js is the more direct place to start: it supplies those common 3D structures and typically uses WebGL to render them. Choose raw WebGL when you specifically need low-level drawing or shader control and are willing to build more of the supporting infrastructure yourself. They are not usually competing rendering technologies; they sit at different levels of abstraction.
How WebGL and Three.js relate
WebGL is a low-level browser graphics API. As the Three.js Fundamentals guide explains, it draws points, lines and triangles; a useful 3D application must provide additional structures around that drawing. Three.js is a JavaScript library that supplies many of those structures, including scene and object abstractions, and commonly uses WebGL to draw. The guide puts it plainly: “Three.js is often confused with WebGL since more often than not, but not always, three.js uses WebGL to draw 3D.”
In a typical Three.js application, a Scene holds objects and a Camera describes the view. A Renderer draws the visible scene to a canvas. The scene graph organizes objects such as meshes, lights, groups and cameras; a mesh combines geometry with a material. This lets you work in terms of recognizable 3D objects instead of assembling every drawing operation yourself. See the Three.js scene-graph guide.
What changes when you choose each approach?

When Three.js is the better fit
Use it for scene-based effects
If the effect naturally consists of objects in a scene—with geometry, materials, textures, lights, a camera and animation—Three.js provides a direct way to organize that work. Its examples demonstrate effects, animation, geometry, cameras, controls and shader-oriented work; they show what the library can do, not how fast it is relative to raw WebGL. Use it when you want to avoid rebuilding common structures
For a conventional interactive scene, starting with the library’s existing abstractions can avoid implementing equivalent scene organization and rendering support from scratch. That is a practical consequence of what Three.js provides, rather than a guarantee that every project will take less time or code.
When raw WebGL is the better fit
Choose it for required low-level control
Raw WebGL makes sense when direct involvement in drawing and shader work is a core requirement—for example, when the effect does not fit the library’s abstractions or the rendering workflow itself needs to be controlled at a lower level. The trade-off is responsibility: more of the structures a 3D application needs become your code to design and maintain.

Account for graphics expertise and maintenance
The choice depends partly on how much low-level control the effect needs, the team’s graphics experience and how much rendering infrastructure it is prepared to own. If those requirements are uncertain, sketch the effect both in terms of scene objects and in terms of the lower-level rendering work each approach would require before committing.
Check browser and renderer requirements
The current Three.js WebGLRenderer documentation says that the renderer uses WebGL 2 and that WebGL 1 has not been supported since Three.js r163. Verify the requirements for the specific Three.js version you plan to deploy and the browsers and devices you need to support. With raw WebGL, check the capabilities and extensions that your implementation actually uses; compatibility depends on those requirements and the target environment.

WebGPU is a separate consideration. MDN’s WebGL tutorial, updated in August 2026 and identified as compatible with Three.js r185, notes that Three.js’s WebGPU renderer uses a WebGPU backend by default and has WebGL 2 as a fallback. That does not change what choosing Three.js’s WebGLRenderer means: confirm the renderer and fallback behavior for the version and deployment target in question.

There is no universal performance winner established for Three.js or raw WebGL. Results depend on the scene, implementation, device and workload, and the available documentation does not provide a comparative benchmark. If speed or smooth interaction is decisive, build a representative version of the effect and measure it on the target browsers and hardware. Compare the same visible work and interaction demands; examples or API descriptions alone do not establish which implementation performs better.
