To improve WebGL shader performance on mobile, measure a repeatable scene on representative phones and tablets, then test changes that reduce fragment work, render fewer pixels, or use precision appropriate to each calculation. Check the image, frame stability, compatibility, memory use, and sustained power draw after each change. No single shader rewrite is fastest on every mobile GPU.
Use MDN’s WebGL best practices and the Khronos WebGL specification as guidance, then verify results on the browsers and devices your application supports.
Start with a repeatable baseline
Before editing a shader, run the same scene at the same canvas size, in the same browser, on the same device. Record frame time or stability and inspect the rendered image. Test more than one representative mobile device: browser, driver, precision support, and GPU behavior vary. The official guidance cited here does not provide a universal benchmark or a guaranteed percentage improvement for a particular shader or phone.
Change one factor at a time where practical. That makes it easier to tell whether an improvement came from shader arithmetic, drawing-buffer resolution, texture handling, or reduced API overhead—and whether the visual or power tradeoff is acceptable.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android.You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Reduce fragment work when interpolation preserves the image
A fragment shader may run for many covered pixels, so expensive per-pixel calculations can become costly. MDN recommends moving suitable work to the vertex shader, which generally runs fewer times per draw call. This is only appropriate when interpolating the vertex results produces the intended image; many per-pixel calculations cannot be moved without changing detail or artifacts.
- Look for calculations repeated for every fragment whose result can be computed per vertex and interpolated acceptably.
- Compare the resulting image closely, especially at edges, on gradients, and wherever lighting or other effects change rapidly.
- Use GLSL built-ins such as
dot,mix, andnormalizewhen they express the calculation clearly. Compilers and hardware may optimize them, but no individual rewrite guarantees a speedup on every device.
Choose shader precision for correctness and compatibility
In GLSL ES 1.00, a fragment shader’s default floating-point precision is lowp unless it declares another default. In WebGL 1, some older mobile hardware does not support fragment highp float, so declaring it unconditionally can make a shader fail to work. Conversely, mediump can produce visible errors when a calculation needs greater range or precision.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
For a WebGL 1 shader that works correctly at medium precision but should use high precision where available, use the conditional pattern documented by MDN:
#ifdef GL_FRAGMENT_PRECISION_HIGH
precision highp float;
#else
precision mediump float;
#endif
Keep higher precision for calculations that need it, including those involving large numeric ranges or accurate texture sampling. For WebGL 2 / ESSL 3.00, precision qualifiers affect shader behavior; do not treat them as mere optimization hints. Test shader compilation and output on supported devices. The OpenGL ES Shading Language specification describes the language’s precision rules.

Test drawing-buffer resolution as a quality control
Rendering fewer pixels can reduce fragment work. A smaller drawing buffer displayed at the same CSS size is a direct way to test that tradeoff, but upscaling can soften the image. Inspect edges, text, and fine detail at each scale rather than assuming the difference will be acceptable.
Handle devicePixelRatio deliberately. Multiplying canvas dimensions by the full device pixel ratio without considering the actual presentation size can create a drawing buffer larger than necessary. There is no universally supported mobile scale factor; compare candidate resolutions on the target devices and choose based on measured stability and acceptable image quality.

Remove avoidable WebGL API and storage costs
Shader arithmetic is not always the bottleneck. WebGL API work can stall the calling thread or add overhead, so profile and simplify the surrounding rendering path as well.
- Keep synchronous queries such as
getError(),getParameter(), shader or program status checks, framebuffer checks, and synchronous readback out of production hot paths. Use asynchronous readback patterns when CPU access to GPU data is needed. - Where supported, consider
KHR_parallel_shader_compileto compile and link shaders without blocking while completion is pending. - Reuse stable vertex array objects (VAOs) and batch draw calls where practical to avoid repeated state changes and calls.
- For WebGL 2 texture allocation, MDN recommends
texStoragefollowed bytexSubImageas an allocation pattern.
Use Spector.js to explore and troubleshoot a WebGL context. It can help inspect rendering activity, but it does not replace timing and image checks on actual target devices.

Include textures and framebuffer bandwidth in the test
Texture sampling and framebuffer storage can affect mobile GPU work and memory bandwidth, even when the shader code itself is unchanged.
- Mipmaps: They can improve sampling locality for 3D textures that will be minified, at the cost of additional memory. MDN advises against paying that cost for 2D resources that are never zoomed out.
- Compressed textures: A supported GPU-compressed format can reduce memory use and bandwidth, but support varies and compression can reduce image quality. Select a format based on supported extensions and inspect the result.
- Framebuffer attachments: Many mobile GPUs use tiled rendering. In WebGL 2, use
invalidateFramebufferwhen attachment contents will not be needed again, particularly for depth/stencil or multisampled attachments, to avoid unnecessary storage work.
Compare changes across the outcomes that matter
Use the same scene and conditions for each comparison. A change is useful only if its performance benefit is worth its effects on quality, compatibility, memory, or power.
| Axis | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Frame performance | Frame time and stability before and after the change under the same scene and conditions. |
| Visual quality | Detail, artifacts, changed interpolation, texture quality, and softness from upscaling. |
| Compatibility | WebGL version, fragment precision support, extension availability, and shader compilation on target browsers and devices. |
| Memory and bandwidth | Drawing-buffer size, textures, mipmaps, compressed-format support, and framebuffer attachments. |
| Power | Battery and thermal behavior during sustained use, not just a brief run. |
The Khronos specification describes powerPreference as a hint to the user agent, not a guarantee that it will be honored. Requesting high performance may significantly reduce mobile battery life, so test the choice under sustained use rather than assuming it is a free speed improvement.
Use current documentation for device-specific decisions
MDN’s WebGL best practices page is living documentation. The Khronos WebGL specification and the GLSL ES specification are versioned references. Check the current support of the browsers, devices, and extensions your application targets; broad guidance cannot establish a device-specific winner.
