Connect each computer to a KVM switch, connect the keyboard, mouse, and other shared USB devices to its peripheral ports, then switch to the computer you want to use. A full KVM switches both USB and video; a USB-only switch shares peripherals but leaves monitor input selection separate. If your monitor has a compatible built-in KVM, it may handle both without a separate switch. Check the exact ports and supported features before connecting anything.

Choose how you want to switch computers

Approach What it switches When it fits
Monitor-integrated KVM USB peripherals and, on supported models, the monitor’s video input Your monitor has KVM support, compatible inputs, and enough downstream USB ports. Dell describes the feature as letting you work with two computers using one keyboard, monitor, and mouse.
External video-and-USB KVM Video and USB peripherals Your monitor lacks KVM, or its port arrangement does not suit your computers. Match the switch’s host and console connections to your equipment.
USB-only sharing switch USB peripherals only You want to share devices and are willing to change the monitor’s video input separately, unless another device handles video switching.

For monitor-integrated wiring, see Dell’s KVM monitor setup guide. For a product-specific example of an external DisplayPort/USB KVM, Eaton’s B005-DPUA4 product page documents its connections and supported capabilities. That model is an illustration, not a universal recommendation.

Connect a monitor with built-in KVM

  1. Confirm KVM support. Check the monitor’s manual or specifications for the KVM feature, number and type of upstream ports, and downstream USB ports.
  2. Connect video from each computer. Use a supported HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C video connection for each host. The required cable depends on the ports on both devices.
  3. Connect USB upstream from each computer. A video cable alone may not let a computer use devices attached to the monitor. Connect each host’s USB upstream link to the monitor.
  4. Attach the shared peripherals. Plug the keyboard, mouse, and other supported devices into the monitor’s USB downstream ports.
  5. Assign the USB upstream connection to the video input. Use the monitor’s on-screen menu or manufacturer utility to pair each display input with the correct USB upstream connection, then select the computer you want to use. Menu names and switching behavior vary by model.

Some monitors separate video and USB data connections even when both use USB-C. ASUS’s Auto KVM FAQ, updated February 12, 2026, says that on the described monitor, one USB-C upstream port supports DP Alt Mode video while another is data-only and needs a separate video input. USB-C by itself does not establish that video is supported: verify the port’s role on both the computer and monitor.

Connect an external KVM switch

  1. Match the switch to your equipment. Check how many computers it accepts, the host and console video connectors, supported resolution and refresh rate, number and type of USB ports, control method, and power requirements.
  2. Connect each computer to a host input. Run the required video and USB links from each computer to its corresponding input on the switch.
  3. Connect the console devices. Attach the monitor and shared USB devices to the switch’s console and peripheral outputs, following the product’s port labels and manual.
  4. Select a host. Use the switch’s supported button, hotkey, remote, or other control to choose the active computer. Eaton lists pushbutton, hotkey, and remote selection for its B005-DPUA4 model.

The cables and layout are product-specific; do not assume that every switch uses the same port labels or wiring.

Check video limits before choosing a switch

Compare the switch’s stated resolution and refresh rate with what both computers and the monitor need. A “4K” label alone does not specify the refresh rate. Eaton lists its B005-DPUA4 DisplayPort/USB model for up to 4K at 60 Hz and specifies USB 3.0 hub ports; those are specifications for that product, not all KVM switches. Check Eaton’s product specifications and the manual for the exact model you are considering.

Also verify that the switch’s USB ports provide the data capability and power required by your devices. For webcams, audio devices, storage, or specialty peripherals, confirm support in the specific KVM’s documentation.

Check USB device compatibility

Peripheral support can vary between KVM implementations. Dell’s guidance for its supported monitors says wireless keyboard and mouse receivers may be plugged into compatible downstream ports, but Bluetooth keyboards and mice are not supported by that guidance. It also says the monitor’s downstream USB port does not support webcam sharing. These are Dell monitor-specific restrictions, not rules for every KVM; check the manual for the exact model and devices you plan to share.

Troubleshoot a setup that does not switch correctly

  • The picture changes, but the keyboard or mouse does not: Check that each computer’s USB upstream cable is connected and that the monitor’s KVM menu pairs the selected video input with the correct USB upstream connection.
  • USB works, but the display does not: Check the video cable and selected input independently. If using USB-C, confirm that the host and the chosen monitor port support video.
  • A webcam or unusual device is unavailable: Check the KVM’s peripheral support and USB port requirements. Do not assume that a device working when directly connected will work through every switch.
  • Resolution or refresh rate is lower than expected: Compare the switch’s model-specific video limits with the capabilities of both computers and the monitor.
  • You are missing a cable: Check the monitor or switch’s included accessories and wiring guide. Dell says compatible upstream cables are supplied with supported Dell KVM monitors; that does not guarantee another brand or model includes them.
