If your laptop speakers sound quiet, distorted, or crackly, first check where audio is playing and whether the system or affected app has its own volume turned down. Then test the built-in speakers with external audio devices disconnected. On Windows, audio enhancements, an unsuitable audio format, driver problems, or stopped audio services can also contribute. On a Mac, confirm that the built-in speakers are selected and unmuted. Work through the checks below one at a time; persistent internal-speaker problems may require service.
Start with the output device, mute, and volume
A normal-looking volume icon does not confirm that sound is coming from the laptop speakers. Headphones, USB audio devices, HDMI connections, or a connected display may be selected instead.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the intended output device.
- Check that the output is not muted and raise its volume to a moderate level.
- Open Volume mixer and check both the system volume and the affected app’s level. An app can be quiet even when Windows volume is high.
- If using external speakers or headphones, check their physical connections and power. For USB audio, try another USB port.
Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guidance covers output selection and volume checks. These instructions apply to Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft.
macOS
- Check the app’s volume control or the webpage player if only one app or site sounds quiet.
- Disconnect external audio devices and displays while testing the laptop’s built-in speakers.
- Open System Settings > Sound > Output, select the built-in speakers, and make sure mute is off and output volume is raised.
Apple’s guidance for Mac speakers that are not working describes these output and volume checks. It does not establish the cause of every quiet or distorted speaker symptom.

If laptop speakers sound quiet or uneven
First compare the system level with the level for the specific app. If the sound remains low across several apps on Windows, test the audio settings below individually. Change one setting, play the same audio again, and restore it if there is no improvement.
Turn off Windows audio enhancements
Audio enhancements can affect volume or sound quality on some devices. Open Settings > System > Sound, select the output device, and turn audio enhancements off if that option is available. Test the same audio afterward. Microsoft notes that enhancements can cause distortion or crackling on some devices, but disabling them is not guaranteed to fix every problem.

Try another default audio format
An incorrect or unsupported format can affect playback. In the selected output device’s sound properties, find the default format setting, choose another available format, and test again. The exact controls can vary by Windows version and device; do not assume one format is best for every laptop.
Microsoft includes these checks in its quiet audio troubleshooting steps.

If laptop speakers sound distorted, crackly, or poor
Distortion can have several causes, including enhancements, an unsuitable audio format, driver issues, or Windows audio services that have stopped. Test settings before concluding that the physical speaker is damaged.
- Disable enhancements and test. Select the output device in Settings > System > Sound, turn off enhancements if available, and replay the same audio.
- Change the default format and test. Use the output device’s sound properties to select another available format, then compare playback.
- Update or reinstall the audio driver. Start with Windows Update. If needed, use Device Manager or follow the laptop maker’s support instructions for the exact model. Restart the laptop after driver changes.
- Restart audio services. In Windows, open the Services app and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test again.
Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance describes driver and service checks. If the usual update path does not help, use the PC manufacturer’s support site for the model-specific driver rather than a driver updater or an unrelated driver download.

Use another output to help isolate the problem
After the free software checks, try headphones or an external speaker if available. If the same audio is clean through another output but remains distorted through the built-in speakers across multiple apps, the comparison points toward the laptop’s internal output path. It is not conclusive proof that a speaker has failed: settings, drivers, and other device-specific faults can still be involved.
A USB speaker, 3.5 mm speaker, or Bluetooth speaker can provide a different listening output, provided it is compatible with the laptop. An external speaker is an alternative for listening, not a repair for the built-in speakers.

When to seek service
If a Mac’s internal speakers still do not work after checking the app volume, disconnecting attached output devices, selecting the built-in speakers, and checking output volume and mute, Apple says the Mac might need service. For any laptop, consider manufacturer support or qualified repair when the same internal-speaker fault persists across apps and settings. Do not open the chassis or order model-specific replacement parts without identifying the laptop and checking appropriate repair guidance.
