If a component should keep its own default instead, register its property with @property and set inherits: false. The choice answers a practical question: should this component setting inherit from its parent, or should each component get its own default?
How do CSS custom properties inherit?
A declaration such as --card-gap: 1rem creates a custom property. Unlike a programming-language variable, it participates in CSS cascading and computed-value behavior. Ordinary custom properties inherit from an element to its descendants unless a descendant overrides them.
For example, declaring a theme token on :root makes it available throughout the document. Declaring it on a wrapper makes it available within that subtree, but not to an unrelated sibling branch. The var(--card-gap) reference reads the property as computed for the element where var() appears; it does not search globally or retrieve a value from a sibling.
/* Theme-level setting: descendants can use or override this value. */
:root {
--card-gap: 1rem;
}
.card-grid {
display: grid;
gap: var(--card-gap);
}
A later matching declaration can override the inherited value, including a declaration scoped to a component state or media query. Custom property names are case-sensitive: --my-color and --My-color are different properties. See MDN’s guide to using custom properties.

Ordinary and registered custom properties compared
| Behavior | Ordinary --name property |
Registered property |
|---|---|---|
| Inheritance | Inherits by default. | Follows the registration’s inherits setting. |
| Value type | Generally an untyped token stream until substituted. | Can be constrained by a declared syntax, such as <color>. |
| Default | Use a declaration or a var() fallback where needed. |
Can define an initial-value. |
| Setup and support | Basic custom-property syntax. | Requires a registration through CSS @property or JavaScript CSS.registerProperty(); check browser support before relying on it. |
MDN marks the Properties and Values API “Baseline 2024,” newly available since July 2024, and cautions that it may not work in older browser versions. Consult the API support information for the browser range your project needs.
When should a reusable component setting inherit?
Let theme and wrapper settings flow downward
Use ordinary inheritance when a setting is intentionally shared across a subtree. Theme colors, spacing scales, and wrapper-level layout controls are common candidates: set the token on a theme or container, then let nested components consume it. A more specific declaration on a nested region can still override it.

Give a component-local setting its own boundary
Use a registered property with inherits: false when a component’s setting should not be silently supplied by an ancestor. A descendant that has no declaration of its own receives the registration’s initial value rather than the ancestor’s custom value.
@property --card-accent {
syntax: "<color>";
inherits: false;
initial-value: teal;
}
.card {
border-color: var(--card-accent);
}
Here the property is constrained to colors and each card uses teal unless a value is set on that card. This is a deliberate contract for a component-local control, not a reason to register every token or turn off inheritance across a design system.

How to register a custom property with @property
- Choose a property name, such as
--card-accent, and decide whether descendants should receive a parent’s value. - Declare the registration with the required
syntaxandinheritsdescriptors. - If the syntax is specific rather than
*, provide aninitial-value. For a typed registration, that initial value must be computationally independent; for example, do not use a contextual value such as1em. - Use the property with
var(--card-accent)in the component’s styles, and declare an override where the component should differ from its default. - Check target-browser support if the design depends on registration behavior. CSS
@propertyperforms registration without JavaScript;CSS.registerProperty()is the JavaScript alternative.
The registration requirements and value rules are documented in MDN’s Properties and Values API guide and @property reference.
What fallbacks and invalid values actually do
A var(--name, fallback) fallback is used when the referenced custom property is absent or invalid at substitution. It does not change whether the property inherits. Registration is different: it adds a syntax contract and can provide an initial value, while its inherits descriptor defines the inheritance behavior.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Registered values are validated at computed-value time. If a value does not satisfy the registered syntax, do not assume CSS will simply fall back to an earlier valid declaration; MDN notes that an invalid value uses the registered default. Keep the syntax, initial value, and inheritance choice aligned with the component’s intended contract.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When is registration worth using?
- Register when consumers need a typed input, an explicit inheritance boundary, a defined initial value, or registration-enabled capabilities such as animation.
- Keep ordinary custom properties for straightforward cascading tokens where inherited values and substitution are the desired behavior.
- Do not use
inherits: falsejust to prevent all overrides: it specifically blocks inheritance from ancestors, while a component can still receive its own declaration through the cascade.
For broader CSS context, CSS: The Definitive Guide: Web Layout and Presentation, fifth edition by Eric Meyer and Estelle Weyl, is a general CSS reference whose coverage includes custom properties and fallbacks; it is not solely a custom-properties manual.
