Plex says recommendations may use your synced watch history and ratings when watch-state and ratings sync is enabled. It does not publish the recommendation algorithm, the weight given to those signals, or confirmation that every piece of playback data it collects affects rankings. Separately, Plex lets server administrators manage which recommendation rows appear in supported home and library views.
How Plex recommendations work
Plex’s clearest public description says recommendations may be based on watch history and ratings when sync is enabled. Sync Watch State and Ratings carries watched or unwatched status and ratings across a Plex account’s experiences and servers. Plex says a sync event includes the account user ID, title identifier, date and time, and the state or rating. The event does not specify whether the viewing happened on a personal server, in Discover, or in Plex’s streaming catalog. Plex’s Sync Watch State and Ratings documentation describes this feature.
Plex has not publicly specified how it ranks recommendations: its documentation does not say how recent activity is weighted, whether repeat views count differently, or whether completion percentage and social activity affect ordering. Its list of collected playback fields is not a disclosed list of ranking signals.
Recommendation inputs are not the same as recommendation rows
Watch history and ratings are possible inputs to personalization. Recommendation rows are the displays users see, and Plex gives server administrators controls over which rows appear in certain views. According to Plex’s Manage Recommendations documentation, administrators can select rows for player home screens when a source is pinned and for a library’s Recommended view. Showing a collection on the home screen or library Recommended screen is a premium feature that requires an active Plex Pass; that does not mean Plex Pass is needed to view or change every recommendation or privacy setting.

What viewing and activity data Plex lists
Plex’s May 2026 Privacy Policy describes several categories of information. It lists playback details such as content metadata identifiers, percent watched, playback count, play time, rating, seconds watched, viewed state, and time viewed. It also lists interactions such as actions, events, pages, and timestamps; device details such as model, platform, and region; and network or session details such as network status and session length.
This is a data-collection description, not a map of the recommendation system. Plex’s policy says it may use personal data, as permitted by law, to personalize marketing, advertising, recommendations, and other content and experiences. It also describes disclosures that may count as sale, sharing, or targeted-advertising processing under applicable laws, and says publicly shared profile information may be shared with the public and third parties for marketing. These statements do not establish that all viewing history is sold or that recommendation data is necessarily shared with advertisers.

The policy also distinguishes optional playback data from other activity information. Plex says you can turn off “Send playback data to Plex” in Plex Media Server settings to prevent collection or transmission of the listed Optional Playback Data. Check the current server and account settings for the available controls and labels, which may change.
What Plex Discover does—and what that does not prove
Plex Discover helps users find where a title is available in their location, including on a personal server or a streaming service. On a Universal Details page, the app asks Plex Media Servers the user can access whether they have a matching item. This lets Discover connect a title with available playback options; Plex’s documentation does not establish that a server’s collection is used as a recommendation-ranking signal. Who can see your watch history and ratings?
Social visibility is a separate question from what Plex collects for its service or may use for personalization. Plex’s profile privacy settings govern who can see information such as watch history, ratings, and Watchlist activity. The Activity Feed can include activity involving Discover, Plex’s free Movies & Shows service, and accessible Plex Media Servers; what friends can see depends on privacy settings. Plex also documents a control for hiding friends’ activity from detail pages. See Activity Feed and Hide Friends’ Activity.
Changing who can see profile activity should not be treated as the same thing as limiting data sent to Plex. To address optional playback reporting, use the server playback-data setting; to manage social exposure, review profile privacy controls.

Retention and account-level privacy choices
Plex’s May 2026 policy says service-use data such as logging and error tracking is deleted after 90 days. That period is not stated as a blanket limit for watch history or all account data. The policy says personal data is retained in the account while the account is maintained and describes deletion of account-associated personal data within 30 days after account deletion, subject to possible archived copies retained as required by law.
The policy also describes options to request a copy of personal data, delete account data, and set preferences concerning data sharing and sale. Account deletion is broader than turning off optional playback reporting and affects account access and associated subscriptions. Use the current Plex account and server settings to find the applicable controls.
