Those are different problems, and each points to a different fix. Start with the checks below from a device on the same local network before changing NAS settings or troubleshooting remote access.
Identify what is unavailable
When the NAS disappears, note whether the mini PC is still powered on, whether its Ethernet link light is on, whether it responds by IP address, and whether the problem affects one client or every client. A mapped drive disappearing does not by itself mean the mini PC has lost its network connection.
| What you observe | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| No Ethernet link light, or it goes out when the problem occurs | Cable, router or switch port, and the mini PC’s network interface. |
| IP address does not respond from a same-network client | Power, address assignment, subnet, network isolation, cable/port, or NAS network configuration. |
| IP address works but the network name does not | Name resolution or network discovery. |
| Mini PC responds, but the shared folder will not open | SMB service, share permissions, or client credentials and mappings. |
| One computer fails, but another can access the NAS | That client’s network, saved credentials, mapping, or discovery settings. |
| Local access works, but access from outside the home or office fails | Remote-access configuration, WAN address, forwarding, or domain-name setup. |
Check the Ethernet connection first
- Check that the mini PC and router or switch are powered on, then firmly reseat the Ethernet cable at both ends.
- Replace it temporarily with a known-good Cat5e-or-better cable, and plug it into a different LAN port on the router or switch. These are first-line checks recommended in the relevant TP-Link guidance: TP-Link NAS troubleshooting.
- If the mini PC or NAS software exposes Ethernet speed, duplex, or negotiation settings—and those settings were changed—check the device maker’s instructions. TP-Link recommends automatic negotiation for the case covered by its guidance; do not assume another NAS distribution has the same controls.
- Watch the link light while the issue occurs. If it goes out, keep investigating the physical connection or network interface before changing SMB settings.
Do not factory-reset the NAS as an early troubleshooting step. It can erase configuration and does not establish whether the problem is a cable, network path, or share service.
Test the NAS from the same local network
Use a client connected to the main LAN—not a guest Wi-Fi network or another isolated segment—and find the mini PC’s current IP address in its NAS settings or the router’s connected-device list. Make sure the client and NAS are on the intended same subnet. TP-Link’s troubleshooting separates cases where the NAS IP responds from cases where it does not, and specifically calls out guest-network placement as a possible obstacle: TP-Link NAS network checks.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
From a Windows client, you can check basic IP reachability in Command Prompt with ping NAS-IP, replacing NAS-IP with the actual address—for example, ping 192.168.1.50. A successful ping shows that the host responds to that test; it does not prove that SMB is enabled or that the share permissions are correct. A failed ping is not conclusive by itself either, because a device or firewall may block ping requests.
- No response by IP and no working share: Recheck the address, cable and port, subnet, guest or isolation settings, and the NAS’s network configuration. If the mini PC itself appears to shut down or restart, investigate power and system stability separately; the symptoms alone do not identify a faulty power supply or storage device.
- IP responds but the network name fails: Try the IP when opening the share. If that works, focus on name resolution or discovery rather than treating the NAS as disconnected.
- IP responds but the share fails: Move to SMB, account, and share-permission checks instead of repeatedly restarting the router.
Fix a reachable NAS whose SMB share will not open
First check the NAS’s own settings to confirm that SMB is enabled, the share still exists, and the account you are using has permission to access it. The labels and menu paths depend on the NAS software; QNAP’s instructions apply to QNAP devices, not necessarily to a mini PC running another NAS distribution. QNAP recommends checking network placement and SMB configuration, then addressing saved Windows credentials or remapping the share: QNAP: What can’t I access NAS shared folders with Windows File Explorer (SMB)?.
On Windows, try the share by IP address as well as by network name, using the NAS’s actual share path if you know it. Seeing—or not seeing—the mini PC in File Explorer’s Network view is not the same test as opening a known share directly.

- Confirm the username and password are valid for the NAS, and that the account is allowed to use the specific share.
- If Windows may be using an old password, remove the NAS’s stale saved credentials in Windows Credential Manager, then try again with the current account. Removing saved credentials may require you to enter them again.
- If the saved drive mapping is stale, disconnect it and map the share again with the correct address and account. QNAP provides product-specific steps for clearing stored credentials and remapping.
Do not enable SMB1 or guest access as a routine fix for a missing share. Microsoft documents an insecure guest-access workaround for a particular Windows error, but weakening authentication protections can expose shared files. Prefer named accounts and SMB versions supported by both the NAS and client. Consider a legacy-protocol workaround only if you have confirmed the device truly requires it, cannot be updated, and you understand the security tradeoff; use Microsoft’s instructions for the exact Windows edition and reverse the change when it is no longer required: Microsoft Learn: Can’t access shared folders from File Explorer.
Investigate drops after sleep or idle periods
If the connection fails mainly after the mini PC sleeps or sits idle, review its sleep behavior and the network adapter’s power-management settings. The location and effect of Ethernet-specific controls depend on the operating system and adapter driver. Microsoft’s documented advice to disable adapter power saving is for Wi-Fi troubleshooting, so do not assume the same control exists or behaves identically for Ethernet: Microsoft: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.
For drivers or NAS software, use updates from the relevant mini PC, operating-system, adapter, or NAS vendor. Record the installed version and date before changing software so you can identify what changed if the problem continues. If you use Windows 10, Microsoft states that support ended on October 14, 2025; take that support status into account when planning operating-system troubleshooting and updates: Microsoft: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.

Treat remote-access failures as a separate problem
Confirm the NAS works from the local LAN by IP before troubleshooting access from outside it. Local access, remote access by public IP, and remote access by domain name are separate checks. TP-Link’s router guidance discusses NAS access and router configuration for its products; available controls vary by router: TP-Link NAS router troubleshooting.
- Works remotely by public IP but not by domain name: Check the domain or DDNS configuration and whether it points to the current public address.
- Works locally but not from outside: Check the WAN/public IP and the router’s configured forwarding for the intended service, if your setup requires forwarding.
- Fails locally and remotely: Resolve the local connection or share problem first; remote troubleshooting cannot establish that the NAS itself is available.
Do not expose an SMB share directly to the public internet as a casual fix. If remote file access is required, use a supported VPN or a vendor-secured remote-access method appropriate to your setup rather than opening SMB broadly to outside connections.
When to escalate
If the mini PC remains unavailable after you have checked the physical link, verified local IP reachability, and separated a share failure from a network failure, gather details before contacting the mini PC or NAS-software vendor. Record whether the link light stays on, the current IP address, whether ping responds, whether access by IP differs from access by name, whether SMB alone fails, and whether one or all clients are affected. The exact next diagnostic depends on the mini PC’s operating system, NAS software, adapter, and router; the symptoms do not by themselves establish a defective drive, power supply, or network driver.
