DNS-collector captures, processes, and routes DNS telemetry from sources such as DNStap, live capture, and log files. Choose its output format for the system that will consume the data, and investigate buffering and sink behavior when packets are dropped: the collector’s settings and each logger’s outage handling both matter.

Which DNS-collector output format should I choose?

Match the format to the destination and to how much of the original data you need to retain. The project documents text, nested JSON, flat JSON, Jinja templates, PCAP, and DNStap forwarding.

Format Best fit Trade-off to consider
Text Readable, customizable output. Non-UTF-8 values may be replaced during processing.
Nested JSON Consumers that handle nested objects and structured fields. Confirm the destination can parse nested records.
Flat JSON Indexing and analytics destinations such as Elasticsearch, Loki, OpenSearch, ClickHouse, or Grafana. Structured fields and lists are flattened, which changes their representation for downstream parsing.
Jinja Custom rendered output. The rendered structure depends on the template you configure.
PCAP Wireshark, traffic analysis, and troubleshooting. Do not assume it is a byte-for-byte record of encrypted application payloads; the documented capture maps DoH, DoT, and DoQ to UDP port numbers without encryption.
DNStap Forwarding to a consumer that accepts DNStap. Verify the destination’s compatibility and configuration.

The project documentation says nested JSON generation in Go is “~3.4x faster” than flat JSON generation. That is an encoding-oriented documentation claim, not an end-to-end throughput guarantee: disk I/O and network latency can constrain output to sinks.

Preserving binary or unusual DNS data

DNS-collector processes textual fields such as qname and rdata as UTF-8 strings. Non-UTF-8 characters—including raw binary values in TXT records—may be replaced in Text or JSON output. If you need to preserve the original bytes, use the Data Extractor transformer’s base64-fields or hex-fields options to emit them in encoded form.

How do DNS-collector buffers affect performance?

The project’s documented global.worker defaults are buffer-size: 512 batches, batch-size: 64 messages, and flush-interval-ms: 10. Batching is intended to reduce channel contention, context switching, and allocations. The project describes batch size 64 as delivering “+40% speedup vs unbatched”; treat that as its documentation claim, not an independent benchmark or a promise for a complete deployment.

These settings are tuning starting points, not universal capacity figures. Larger buffers can help absorb bursts but require more memory; larger batches and flush intervals can reduce overhead while changing how quickly data is sent. Choose values against observed traffic, available memory, and destination throughput. The documented performance comparisons concern encoding; actual writing speed depends on the disk or network sink.

Why is DNS-collector dropping packets?

A warning that a logger buffer is full alongside dropped packets points to buffer exhaustion or a downstream ingestion bottleneck. Check the receiving service and its latency as well as the collector’s settings.

  1. Inspect collector logs for buffer-full warnings and establish which logger is affected.
  2. Check whether the sink is reachable and keeping up with incoming records; review its latency and ingestion capacity.
  3. If memory permits, increase buffer-size. The project’s examples include 1024 or 2048; treat these as configuration examples, not guaranteed fixes.
  4. Scale downstream logger workers or optimize the sink’s batch ingestion if the destination cannot drain records quickly enough.
  5. For file output, review its mode, batching, flush interval, rotation, and optional compression. Compression runs asynchronously after rotation, with only one compression task at a time, so investigate disk capacity and post-rotation work if output is delayed.

Increasing a buffer can absorb temporary bursts; it does not make a persistently slow or unavailable destination reliable. The logger’s own reconnect and persistence behavior determines what happens during an outage.

What happens when a logging destination disconnects?

Delivery behavior differs by integration. Do not assume that every connector retries, buffers to disk, or guarantees delivery. The project documentation describes the following differences:

Logger Documented behavior during a connection problem Operational implication
Fluentd Buffering is memory-only. If the connection is not ready, messages are dropped; during reconnection, incoming messages are discarded and buffering is paused. This documented behavior is not durable, disk-backed persistence. Evaluate whether losses during a Fluentd outage are acceptable.
MQTT The logger documents reconnect attempts at a configured retry interval and buffering up to the configured channel buffer during disconnection, followed by publication after reconnection. Check the deployed settings and broker behavior. The configured QoS is a reliability-versus-throughput choice, not a blanket delivery guarantee.

For either logger, verify the current logger-specific documentation, TLS settings, certificates or trust roots, and any client authentication requirements for your deployment.

Which integrations can DNS-collector connect to?

The project README lists DNS-server sources including BIND, PowerDNS, and Unbound. Documented inputs also include DNStap, live capture, and log files. On the output side, the documentation covers text and structured formats, while naming Elasticsearch, Loki, OpenSearch, ClickHouse, and Grafana as examples of analytics or indexing consumers. Dedicated logger guides cover Fluentd and MQTT.
