Consider a separate vector database when measured workload requirements or your team’s operating model justify running another system. Neither option is universally faster, cheaper, or more scalable: the right choice depends on your data, filters, recall target, update rate, latency needs, and available resources.
What pgvector and a dedicated vector database do
pgvector is a PostgreSQL extension that adds vector data types and similarity search. Its default nearest-neighbor search is exact, which provides perfect recall; as a corpus grows, exact search can take longer. You can add approximate indexes to trade some recall for query speed.
A dedicated vector database is a separate system focused on storing and querying vectors. That category includes different products and deployment models, so “dedicated” alone does not tell you how a particular service performs or what it costs to operate.
Keeping vectors in PostgreSQL can make it straightforward to query them alongside relational records. In its comparison, Pinecone identifies relational-data locality and transactions as pgvector advantages. Pinecone’s comparative statements describe its own vendor positioning, not an independent benchmark.

Choose the search approach before choosing a system
If exact results meet your latency and resource requirements, you may not need an approximate index. If they do not, compare pgvector’s two documented approximate index types with your real data and retrieval targets.
| Index | Build and memory characteristics | Query trade-off and setup |
|---|---|---|
| HNSW | Slower to build and uses more memory than IVFFlat; does not require training and can be created before table data exists. | The pgvector project documents a better query speed/recall trade-off than IVFFlat. Search and graph-construction parameters let you tune recall, query speed, and build or insert speed. |
| IVFFlat | Builds faster and uses less memory than HNSW. Build it after data exists. | Has a lower query speed/recall trade-off than HNSW. The number of lists and probes affects speed and recall. |
These are relative characteristics documented by the pgvector project, not promises about a particular workload. Measure index construction, memory use, recall, and latency with your own vectors and settings rather than treating generic tuning guidance as a guarantee.

Test filters and tenant boundaries—not just unfiltered search
Approximate-index filtering can change how many results a query returns. pgvector applies SQL filters after scanning the approximate index. In an illustrative example, its README says that with a 10% filter match rate and the default HNSW search breadth of 40, about four rows match on average. A selective predicate can therefore return fewer rows than the requested k.
Options documented by the project for relevant cases include increasing search breadth, iterative scans (available beginning with pgvector 0.8.0), partial indexes, and partitioning. Which option helps depends on the query pattern and data layout; test the actual predicates and record both recall and the frequency of results falling short of k.

With multiple tenants sharing an approximate index, one tenant’s vectors can affect another tenant’s recall and query speed. The pgvector project suggests considering list partitioning or separate tables for tenant isolation. Do not assume one partition per tenant is automatically best: tenant count and query patterns matter.
When pgvector is a sensible first choice
- Your application already runs on PostgreSQL, and vector matches need to be joined with or transactionally consistent with relational records.
- PostgreSQL’s resource budget can accommodate the vector index and query workload without unacceptable contention with other database work.
- Your real mix of filters, tenants, inserts, updates, and deletes can meet the application’s recall and latency objectives.
- You prefer to keep data and operations in the existing database environment instead of adding another service.
These are reasons to begin with pgvector, not guarantees that it will remain the best fit at every scale. Measure it against the workload the application actually serves.

When to evaluate a separate vector database
Evaluate a named service when PostgreSQL resource contention, workload growth, filtering or result-count needs, or your team’s operational preferences give you a concrete reason to separate vector search. A dedicated system also introduces work: data movement and synchronization, deployment or service configuration, monitoring, availability planning, security, and additional spend.
Pinecone describes a managed model in which users write to an index while Pinecone operates query servers, and positions its service for workloads needing managed capacity or filtered result counts. Those are Pinecone’s claims about its service. Its comparison also argues that a managed product can suit continuously changing corpora; treat that as vendor positioning to validate against your own update rate and requirements.

The useful question is not whether a vector database is “dedicated,” but whether a particular service solves a measured constraint well enough to justify the additional system and its operating costs.
Compare the options with a representative test
- Define the workload. Record corpus size, vector dimensions, similarity metric, expected growth, insert/update/delete rate, filter patterns, tenant boundaries, and realistic query concurrency.
- Set acceptance targets. Specify the required recall, latency objectives, and whether filtered queries must return the requested
kwhenever enough matching records exist. - Establish a quality baseline. Compare approximate results with exact search or another suitable ground truth, using the same query set and relevance method for each candidate.
- Measure PostgreSQL configurations. Compare exact search, HNSW, and IVFFlat where applicable. Include index build time and memory as well as query behavior under realistic filters and concurrent database activity.
- Test a named separate service on the same workload. Include the cost and reliability implications of keeping its data synchronized with the application’s relational records.
- Document the result. Report dataset size, dimensions, metric, hardware or service configuration, index parameters, filter selectivity, concurrency, recall method, and test date. Do not generalize one configuration’s result into a universal ranking.
Make the decision from constraints, not labels
Begin with pgvector when PostgreSQL integration is valuable, then determine whether exact search or a tuned approximate index meets your measured targets. Move to a separately operated service for evaluation when a specific constraint remains unmet or its operating model is a better fit for your team. Filtering behavior, recall, memory, build costs, update patterns, latency, and the burden of a second system should all be part of that decision.
