If your phone offers Motorola’s separate Auto lock feature, it can lock immediately when a trusted Bluetooth device disconnects. The steps and options vary by phone and Android version; these instructions are for Android, not iPhone.
How Android trusted-device locking works
Google calls the feature Extend Unlock, formerly Smart Lock. Once configured, it can keep your phone unlocked while it remains connected to a Bluetooth device you have marked as trusted, such as a watch or car speaker system. This extends the unlocked state; it does not make the phone lock as soon as it moves a certain distance from the accessory.
Google advises against selecting a Bluetooth device that is always with your phone, such as a keyboard or case. Choose an accessory whose presence is a useful signal that you are in a situation where you want the phone to stay unlocked.
Set up or remove a trusted Bluetooth device
- Turn on Bluetooth and pair the accessory with your phone if you have not already done so.
- Open Settings and go to Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Extend Unlock. Menu names and routes vary; some devices use a Security & location label or another equivalent path.
- Enter your screen-lock credential. Extend Unlock requires a screen lock to be set up.
- Tap Trusted devices, then Add trusted device, and select the paired Bluetooth device. Confirm the selection and unlock the phone if prompted.
- To stop trusting an accessory, return to the same trusted-device area and remove it.
Some phones may ask you to confirm a secure connection or unlock again while adding a device. If the menu is missing, check your device maker’s settings guidance; availability and labels vary across Android devices.

Can you adjust Bluetooth range or lock delay?
Bluetooth range
Google’s Extend Unlock instructions do not provide a setting to calibrate a trusted device’s Bluetooth radius. Google says range depends on the phone, Bluetooth device, and environment, and may reach up to 100 meters. That is a possible connection range, not a dependable locking boundary: walls, interference, device design, and surroundings affect whether the connection holds. Google summarizes the variability this way: “Range depends on factors like your device model, Bluetooth device, and current environment.”
If the phone stays connected farther away than you want, you cannot set a precise radius in the documented Extend Unlock controls. Remove the trusted device or stop using the feature rather than relying on distance as a security boundary.

Bluetooth lock delay
Google documents an Extend Unlock window of up to four hours at a time, but does not describe this as a user-adjustable Bluetooth disconnect timer. Do not confuse it with On-body detection, which has separate behavior: after you set the phone down, locking may take up to one minute; after you enter a vehicle, it may take five to ten minutes. Those timings describe on-body detection, not a Bluetooth delay slider.
Motorola Auto lock is a different option
Some supported Motorola phones offer Auto lock, which can lock the phone immediately after it disconnects from a trusted Bluetooth device. The feature can also use a trusted Wi-Fi network or place. Motorola’s support guidance points users to Moto Secure or Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Auto lock; enable the feature and add the trusted condition you want. Availability depends on the model and software. This is not a universal Android setting and is not the same as Google’s Extend Unlock.

Reduce risk or temporarily disable the convenience
A trusted Bluetooth connection is a convenience, not proof that the phone is physically beside you or in your control. Google warns, “It’s possible that someone could keep your device unlocked by imitating your Bluetooth connection.” Someone who takes your phone while it is near the trusted accessory may also be able to access it.

- Choose a trusted device that is genuinely under your control, rather than an accessory that is always carried with the phone.
- Manually lock the phone when leaving it unattended or when you are in a less secure environment.
- Use Android’s Lockdown option for a temporary override: press Power + Volume Up, then choose Lockdown. This disables Extend Unlock and fingerprint or face unlocking where supported until you unlock the phone again.
- Remove a trusted device if you no longer want it to extend the unlocked state.
Troubleshoot behavior that does not match your expectations
- The phone stays unlocked at a distance: Bluetooth reach varies, and Extend Unlock has no documented radius control. Remove the device or disable the convenience feature if that reach is unacceptable.
- The phone does not lock immediately after disconnecting: Google’s Extend Unlock is designed to keep the phone unlocked while the trusted connection is present and can keep it unlocked for up to four hours at a time; it is not Motorola Auto lock. Immediate disconnect locking is documented for supported Motorola Auto lock devices, not every Android phone.
- You cannot find the setting: Search Settings for “Extend Unlock,” “Smart Lock,” or “Auto lock,” and check your manufacturer’s help for the model-specific route. Screen labels differ by device and Android release.
