Usually, no. For routine slowdowns, Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is to use Task Manager to identify resource-heavy apps, close what you do not need, review startup and background activity, and restart if necessary—not to install a third-party RAM cleaner. A high memory percentage is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis.
What a memory cleaner does—and what it does not do
“Memory cleaner” usually refers to software that claims to free physical memory (RAM). That is different from Windows storage cleanup: Storage Sense and cleanup recommendations remove eligible files to free space on a drive. Deleting temporary files does not itself free RAM. Microsoft’s [drive-space guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/free-up-drive-space-in-windows-85529ccb-c365-490d-b548-831022bc9b32) covers storage, while its [memory-management documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/memory/memory-management) describes how Windows manages memory, including virtual memory.
Windows can use paging and swapping, particularly on devices with limited memory. Available memory can affect responsiveness in those circumstances, but that does not establish that a third-party cleaner is needed. Microsoft documents memory information through performance counters and functions, with related information also available in Task Manager.
What to do when a Windows PC feels slow
Microsoft’s performance guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and recommends checking resource use, closing unused apps, reviewing startup apps, and restarting if performance does not improve. Follow these steps before assuming a cleaner will help.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, look for apps using substantial resources; use Performance to review overall memory use.
- Close only apps you recognize and are not using. Close unnecessary browser tabs as well.
- In Task Manager, review Startup apps and disable entries you do not need to launch with Windows. Where available, review an app’s background permissions and turn off unnecessary activity.
- If the system is still slow, restart it and see whether the problem returns.
- If the symptom persists, note which process is using more memory, when the increase occurs, and whether the result is slowness, an app error, or a crash. A single memory percentage does not prove a memory leak or hardware fault.

Choose the fix that matches the problem

Microsoft says older PCs may not improve significantly through software steps and that an upgrade may be the best long-term option. That is not a recommendation to buy RAM for every slow computer: first establish that memory capacity is the constraint, then verify the specific device’s upgradeability and component compatibility. Microsoft’s general guidance does not specify a compatible kit, capacity, or RAM configuration for an individual PC.

Questions about cleaners and high memory use
Does Windows need a third-party RAM cleaner?
For ordinary use, Microsoft’s reviewed performance guidance points to built-in diagnostic and management steps rather than a requirement to install a cleaner. If a recurring symptom remains, investigate its cause instead of assuming a cleaner will solve it.
Why is RAM usage high?
Multiple apps or browser tabs, startup programs, and background activity may contribute. Task Manager can help identify the processes involved, but the percentage alone does not reveal the cause.

Should I use Storage Sense to free RAM?
No. Storage Sense is for freeing drive space by removing eligible files. It is not a RAM-cleaning tool. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance for storage management.
Is a particular memory-cleaner app safe or effective?
Microsoft’s cited guidance is not a comparative test or product-specific security assessment of memory-cleaner apps. It does not establish that every such utility is unsafe or ineffective, and it is not enough to recommend a particular app.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The performance steps above cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but support status matters if you still use Windows 10. Check Microsoft’s performance guidance for current details.
