Choose an AI coding assistant by piloting it against your team’s real repositories, IDEs, security rules, and everyday tasks—not by picking a universal “best” tool from a feature list. Compare workflow fit, administration, data handling, context capabilities, total cost, and product lifecycle, then keep normal code review and security checks in place.

Start with the team’s requirements

Before comparing vendors, write down the constraints that could rule a product in or out. The right shortlist depends on your development environment and policies, not just the assistant’s code-generation features.

  • Development workflow: List the IDEs, languages, source-control host, and review process the team actually uses.
  • Security and governance: Identify what code or other context may leave developer devices, retention limits, training restrictions, logging needs, and any regional-processing requirements.
  • Administration: Decide how seats will be assigned and removed, which features need controls, and what usage or audit records administrators need.
  • Project context: Determine whether the assistant must use local project context or private repositories, and whether that capability is included in the relevant edition.
  • Budget and purchasing: Set an all-seat budget and account for included usage, credits, overages, premium-model consumption, and administrative effort.
  • Lifecycle: Check support dates, roadmap dependencies, and the work required to move to another product or model provider.

Use these requirements to create a shortlist. The products below are examples supported by current vendor documentation, not an exhaustive market ranking.

Compare candidates on evidence, not promises

Workflow fit and project context

Check that each candidate works in the team’s actual IDEs and supports the tasks developers need: completing code, generating or editing functions, writing tests, debugging, explaining unfamiliar code, and reviewing changes. Google lists VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Android Studio, and other supported environments for Gemini Code Assist, along with completions, generation, testing, debugging, and code explanation. Google distinguishes Enterprise, which can customize suggestions using private repositories, from Standard. Confirm current edition details in the Gemini Code Assist editions and capabilities documentation.

Administration and oversight

Ask who can provision and remove seats, set feature policies, configure file exclusions, and review usage or audit logs. GitHub documents organization and enterprise controls for member access, feature policies, file exclusions, usage data, and audit logs; settings can vary by plan and client. Check the applicable GitHub Copilot administration documentation against your own subscription and IDE setup.

Data handling and governance

Ask vendors to map the exact data flow for the service and configuration you would buy: what prompts, code, IDE context, responses, telemetry, or interaction history is collected; who processes it; how long it is retained; whether it can train models; and what regional or logging controls apply.

See the Gemini Code Assist data governance documentation.
  • JetBrains: Its FAQ says optional detailed collection can include prompts, responses, code snippets, edit history, terminal usage, and interactions, and that this information is used for product improvement and training JetBrains models. Its service-provider table names external providers that vary by service and configuration; review it alongside the AI data collection FAQ.

Cost and usage limits

Compare recurring seat fees with what is included and what happens when a team exceeds its allowance. GitHub’s documentation surfaced on October 4, 2026 lists the following USD figures; they are vendor list figures, not a complete market comparison or a purchase quote.

Lifecycle and portability

Include product support dates in the decision, especially if adoption would create significant workflow dependence. AWS states that support for the Amazon Q Developer IDE plugin ends on April 30, 2027, and points users to Kiro for similar capabilities. See the AWS migration guidance. If considering that plugin, evaluate whether the supported successor meets your requirements before investing in rollout or custom integration work.

  1. Choose realistic tasks. Have participants explain unfamiliar code, generate or edit a function, write tests, debug an issue, and review a change. Include tasks with known requirements so reviewers can judge correctness rather than style alone.
  2. Set acceptance criteria in advance. Define what counts as useful, correct, secure, maintainable output for each task. Record when an answer needs substantial correction or is rejected.
  3. Use comparable conditions. Give each candidate equivalent tasks and evaluation time. Note differences in configuration, available context, or enabled features that could affect results.
  4. Measure the whole workflow. Track accepted usefulness, correctness after tests and review, time spent correcting output, latency, adoption, and spend. These are pilot measures for your team, not published comparative productivity results.
  5. Review risks and administration. Test the proposed data and exclusion settings, administrator controls, onboarding and removal process, and any audit or usage reporting your policy requires.
  6. Decide against the requirements. Choose a tool only if its observed value, governance, cost, and lifecycle fit the team. If the pilot does not show useful results under normal review standards, do not treat generated volume as evidence of productivity.

Keep validation in the development process

An assistant’s confident explanation or plausible code is not proof that it is correct. Google warns that Gemini Code Assist can produce output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect and recommends validating output before use. Apply the same engineering discipline to any candidate: compile or run the code, execute tests, review changes, and use the team’s normal security checks. The assistant can help produce or inspect a change; responsibility for accepting it stays with the team.
