OpenCode sends a prompt to the OpenRouter model you select, while OpenRouter handles the gateway-side provider or model choice according to the routing options in use. A fixed model selection does not automatically pick a model based on the coding task. To use OpenRouter’s prompt-based Auto Router, select openrouter/auto instead. The setup and configuration syntax depend on which generation of OpenCode documentation matches your installed version.
How a prompt travels from OpenCode to an OpenRouter model
The basic path is: OpenCode stores your OpenRouter credentials and supplies a selected model identifier; OpenRouter receives the request and routes it according to that model and any applicable routing options; the selected model generates the response, which returns through the gateway to OpenCode.
That distinction matters: OpenCode’s model selection is not, by itself, an analysis of your prompt. With a fixed model, the request goes to that model. Provider preferences and fallback behavior affect routing at different layers, while OpenRouter’s Auto Router is the documented option for choosing a model based on prompt characteristics.
Connect OpenRouter and select a model
- Connect credentials: In OpenCode, run
/connect, search for OpenRouter, and enter an OpenRouter API key. See the OpenCode provider guide for its documented workflow. - Choose a model: Run
/modelsand select an OpenRouter model. OpenCode’s provider guide says many OpenRouter models are preloaded and selectable this way; it also documents adding models inopencode.json. - Check the selector format for your version: OpenCode v2 uses a provider/model selector. Its example is
openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4;openrouteridentifies the provider, and the rest identifies the OpenRouter model. The v2 model documentation also describes optional#variantsuffixes and notes that model IDs are case-sensitive. Consult the v2 model guide if you need to interpret a selector.
For configuration details specific to OpenRouter, use the current OpenCode provider guide or the OpenCode v2 provider guide that corresponds to your installation. Do not copy a configuration object from one documentation generation into the other without checking its schema.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What each routing option controls
There are three distinct choices: a fixed model, a preferred OpenRouter provider with optional fallbacks, or OpenRouter Auto Router. They differ in who makes the choice and whether it can vary from request to request.
| Option | Who chooses | Can the choice vary? | What happens on an error? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed OpenRouter model | You select the model in OpenCode. | Not as a result of prompt-based selection; the configured model remains the target. | Fallback behavior depends on the routing configuration and OpenRouter handling; a fixed selector alone does not establish a fallback list. |
| Provider preference | You specify a preferred provider for a model in OpenCode’s OpenRouter configuration. | Provider choice follows the configured preference, subject to any configured fallback behavior. | OpenRouter’s fallback settings determine whether another provider is allowed; for example, the current OpenCode provider guide shows allow_fallbacks: false. |
| Model fallback list | You set model priority for OpenRouter. | OpenRouter can try the next listed model after an error. | OpenRouter documents fallback attempts for errors such as rate limits, downtime, context-length validation errors, or moderation flags. |
Auto Router (openrouter/auto) |
OpenRouter selects a model after analyzing prompt complexity, task type, and model capability. | Yes; selection can depend on the prompt, and the eligible model pool changes. | The Auto Router documentation describes forwarding to the chosen model and returning model metadata; it does not establish a fixed candidate pool. |
Set provider preferences without confusing them with fallbacks
The current OpenCode provider guide shows an OpenRouter model configuration with a provider order, for example order: ["baseten"], and an allow_fallbacks setting. This is an OpenCode-side preference passed to OpenRouter, not proof that OpenCode itself selects a different model when a request fails.

OpenRouter’s separate model fallback mechanism uses a prioritized models list. According to its Model Fallbacks documentation, OpenRouter can try the next model after specified errors. Its response reports which model was actually used, and the documentation says pricing is based on that model. Check the response rather than assuming the original target handled a request that triggered a fallback.
The example settings are options, not universal defaults. Set provider order or disable provider fallbacks only if you want that behavior and have confirmed the relevant schema for your OpenCode version.

Use Auto Router for prompt-based model selection
If you want OpenRouter to choose a model based on the prompt rather than always target one fixed model, select openrouter/auto. OpenRouter describes its Auto Router as considering prompt complexity, task type, and model capability before forwarding the request. Its Auto Router guide notes that the eligible model pool changes, so a particular candidate should not be treated as guaranteed.
This is a separate routing choice from setting a preferred provider for a fixed model or listing fallback models. Auto Router selects a model; a provider order expresses a provider preference, and a fallback list gives OpenRouter alternatives to try after errors.

Keep OpenCode configuration generations separate
The non-versioned OpenCode provider guide documents a provider object and the /connect and /models workflow. The v2 guides use a providers configuration shape, document OpenRouter’s native runtime, and use identifiers such as openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4. These are different documentation generations; do not merge their object names or examples into one configuration.
OpenCode v2 says to retain the native OpenRouter package when overriding its endpoint or using an OpenRouter-compatible gateway, so OpenRouter request and reasoning behavior is preserved. Its provider guide recommends defining a custom provider when a gateway has its own model inventory and exposes only an OpenAI-compatible API. See OpenCode v2 providers for that distinction.

Check what handled a request
When fallback or automatic selection is involved, the configured selector may not tell you which model ultimately answered. OpenRouter documents that the response reports the model actually used. Use that response metadata to distinguish the requested route from the route that completed the request.
