OpenRouter is the better fit when you want one hosted API for trying and switching among cloud coding models; Ollama is the better fit when you want to run a model on your own computer. Ollama also documents cloud endpoints, so the distinction is not simply “cloud versus local”: compare the mode you plan to use, the model and coding tool, your privacy needs, and the cost of usage versus hardware.
What OpenRouter and Ollama do
OpenRouter: a gateway to hosted models
OpenRouter provides a common API for accessing models hosted by multiple providers. Its 2026 developer documentation advertises a catalog of 500+ models across 80+ providers; that is a vendor-published catalog count, not a measure of coding quality. The service also describes fallback capabilities and cost-effective model selection. See the OpenRouter Quickstart.
OpenRouter’s API is compatible with the OpenAI chat-completions interface, which may simplify setup in a coding tool that supports that interface. Compatibility does not guarantee that every client feature or model behaves identically.
Ollama: local models, with cloud options too
Ollama documents running models on your computer as well as making cloud requests. Its local API uses http://localhost:11434/api, with an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:11434/v1. Its cloud endpoints are https://ollama.com/api and https://ollama.com/v1; cloud requests require an API key. Local calls do not require one. The Ollama API Introduction describes both modes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For local inference, the model runs on your computer. Whether a particular model and coding workload are practical depends on the computer’s hardware and the model; the documentation does not establish a general minimum specification.
How to choose for coding
| What matters | OpenRouter | Ollama running locally |
|---|---|---|
| Model choice and switching | One hosted API gives access to a broad, changing catalog across providers. OpenRouter advertises 500+ models and 80+ providers in its 2026 developer documentation; the count is vendor-published. | Choose from models supported for local use. Ollama’s documentation gives glm-4.7, minimax-m2.1, and qwen3-coder as coding examples; these are vendor suggestions, not a comparative ranking. |
| Output quality | Depends on the selected model and how it handles your code, task, and context. | Depends on the selected model and how it handles your code, task, and context. |
| Speed and connectivity | Requests go to hosted services, so use depends on network access and provider availability. | Inference runs on your computer, avoiding a network round trip to a model provider for local requests; usable speed depends on your hardware and chosen model. |
| Hardware | Inference is hosted, so your computer does not need to run the model. | Your computer runs the model. Ollama’s cited API documentation does not specify a universal hardware minimum. |
| Privacy and handling | OpenRouter says prompts and completions are not logged by default by OpenRouter, but requests are proxied to providers. Provider policies and your settings also matter. | With local inference, the model runs on your computer rather than sending the request to a hosted model provider. This comparison applies to local mode, not Ollama cloud requests. |
| Cost | Model inference is priced by model and token type; charges are deducted from account credits. Check current pricing for the model you intend to use. | There is no cloud inference charge for a local request, but you need a suitable computer and bear its purchase and operating costs. No general total-cost comparison is established here. |
Which one should you use?
Choose OpenRouter if you want hosted choice
- You want to try or switch among hosted models through a common API rather than manage local model execution.
- Your coding tool supports the OpenAI chat-completions interface or configurable endpoints, and its needed features work with the model you choose.
- You are comfortable with network-dependent requests, usage-based charges, and reviewing both OpenRouter’s and the underlying provider’s data policies.
Choose Ollama local mode if keeping inference on your computer matters
- You want requests processed by a model running locally rather than sent to a hosted model provider.
- Your computer can run the model and workload at a speed and quality you find useful.
- Your coding tool can connect to Ollama’s local API or its OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Consider Ollama cloud mode if you want its API without local inference
Ollama’s cloud endpoints are a separate option: requests go to its cloud API and require an API key. Do not apply local-mode privacy or hardware assumptions to cloud requests. Check the service’s current terms and policies for the cloud mode you plan to use.

How to evaluate coding quality before committing
There is no established universal winner for coding performance in the vendor documentation cited here. Model quality is task-dependent, so compare candidates against the work you actually do rather than treating catalog size or a model name as proof of better results.
- Pick representative tasks, such as explaining a function in your codebase, proposing a focused change, or diagnosing a test failure.
- Use the same prompt, relevant code context, and acceptance criteria for each candidate.
- Check correctness, whether the answer fits your project, how much editing it takes, and whether it follows your constraints.
- For local use, also judge response speed on your own computer. For hosted use, account for network dependence and the selected model’s current price.
Ollama’s documentation names glm-4.7, minimax-m2.1, and qwen3-coder for coding use cases, but it does not establish that they outperform OpenRouter models or one another. OpenRouter’s catalog breadth likewise does not establish which model will work best on your code.

Privacy, billing, and setup details to check
Understand where requests go
Local Ollama inference runs on your computer. With OpenRouter, requests are proxied to model providers. OpenRouter says it logs basic request metadata and does not log prompts or completions by default; users can opt in to prompt and completion logging in privacy settings. These statements describe OpenRouter’s handling, not a guarantee about retention by every provider. Review the OpenRouter support documentation, your settings, and the applicable provider policies before sending sensitive code.
Estimate hosted usage from the model listing
OpenRouter says inference pricing is passed through from providers and varies by model and token type, with billing deducted from account credits. Prices and catalog details can change, so check the current listing for the model you will use rather than assuming a fixed rate. The support documentation is available at OpenRouter’s FAQ.

Check whether your coding tool accepts a compatible endpoint
OpenRouter and Ollama document OpenAI-compatible API options, but the coding client must allow you to configure the endpoint and support the features you need. Confirm behavior with the specific client and model; interface compatibility alone does not ensure identical feature support.
