A 429 in an n8n node usually means the external service it called is rejecting requests because it is receiving too many. Check the failed execution and the provider’s limits first, then pace the outbound requests with batching or a loop and wait. Use retries for temporary failures, and follow the provider’s Retry-After instruction when it supplies one. An incoming request to an n8n webhook is a separate problem: put an API gateway or web application firewall in front of n8n if inbound rate limiting is needed.

1. Confirm which service returned the 429

Open the failed execution and inspect the node output. For the HTTP Request node, n8n documents the error as “429 – The service is receiving too many requests from you.” The node output may include a message from the service. As n8n puts it, “When an n8n node hits a rate limit, it errors.” n8n’s HTTP Request troubleshooting guide describes this as a service-side rate-limit condition.

Identify the endpoint and operation, how many requests the workflow sent, and any response body or headers retained in the execution. Then check the service provider’s API documentation for the limits that apply to your account and endpoint. Quotas can differ by account, operation, time window, or concurrency; a 429 alone does not tell you which limit was exceeded. Do not assume n8n itself imposed the external service’s quota.

2. Slow the initial stream of requests

Retries address failed requests after they happen. If many input items are triggering calls too quickly, pace the workflow before relying on retries.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use HTTP Request batching

  1. Open the HTTP Request node and choose Add Option > Batching.
  2. Set Items per Batch and Batch Interval (ms) to values that fit the provider’s documented limits.
  3. Run the workflow and inspect the executions to confirm the request pattern and results.

The interval adds a pause between batches. n8n’s documentation gives 1000 ms as an example for a service that permits one request per second; that is an example, not a generally safe setting. Account for limits on concurrent requests, daily volume, or other windows as well as requests per second.

Use Loop Over Items and Wait

If the native batching option does not fit the workflow, place Loop Over Items before the API call and Wait after it, then connect the wait path back to the loop. This makes the pacing visible in the workflow and lets you control the pauses around the call. Choose the loop size and wait duration from the provider’s actual rules.

3. Configure retries for temporary failures

In the node’s Settings, enable Retry On Fail, then configure Max Tries and Wait Between Tries (ms). n8n describes this as retrying a failed operation after a configured wait and recommends waiting longer than the rate-limit interval when recovering from a limit.

A short fixed delay can simply trigger another rejection. A retry policy also does not reduce the initial request burst, so pair it with batching or pacing when multiple items are generating calls. Retries do not guarantee delivery, and not every 429 is temporary. If the configured attempts run out, handle the failure explicitly rather than treating it as success.

4. Use Retry-After when the service provides it

Inspect the 429 response headers for Retry-After. RFC 9110, section 10.2.3, defines the value as either an HTTP date or a non-negative integer number of seconds. The server uses it to indicate how long a client ought to wait before making a follow-up request.

n8n’s documented Wait Between Tries (ms) control is a configured fixed delay; its documentation does not say that this setting automatically reads Retry-After. If the workflow must adapt its wait to that header, use a response-aware pattern and verify how the node exposes the response in the n8n version you run and how the target API formats the header. Do not treat a fixed retry delay as equivalent to following a provider-specified wait.

5. Reduce how many API calls the workflow needs

Check whether the API can return a collection or a filtered set in one request instead of requiring one request per record. Where the data is static or changes infrequently, caching it in n8n data tables and synchronizing the cache when the source changes may also reduce calls. Both approaches depend on the API’s available operations and your data-freshness requirements and usage terms. n8n’s API rate-limiting guide discusses these workload-design options.

6. Separate outbound API errors from inbound webhook traffic

An outbound 429 occurs when an n8n node calls an external service and that service responds with a limit error. Inbound webhook traffic is the opposite direction: outside clients send requests to n8n. For public webhooks that need request limits, n8n’s September 18, 2026 guidance says the platform does not provide built-in inbound rate limiting and recommends placing a dedicated API gateway or web application firewall in front of n8n. That infrastructure addresses incoming traffic; it does not resolve an external API’s quota response to an n8n request.
