Choose an LLM API by testing it on the coding assistant’s real jobs—not by picking the largest context window or relying on a provider’s marketing claims. Compare code correctness, repository-context handling, tool reliability, latency, total usage cost, operational limits, and data handling in a controlled pilot. The available provider documentation does not establish a universal winner or a comparable cross-provider coding benchmark.

Start with the work your assistant must do

Write down the user journeys the assistant will handle before comparing models. A useful evaluation set includes explaining unfamiliar code, implementing a small change, debugging a failing test, refactoring across files, and using tools to inspect or edit repository state. Add ambiguous or adversarial cases if they matter to your product.

Run each candidate against the same tasks, repository context, prompts, tool definitions, and acceptance checks. Keep the harness consistent, then repeat the evaluation when a model or API changes. Provider documentation can describe intended uses and capabilities, but it is not a shared independent benchmark.

Measure the whole coding workflow

A plausible-looking completion is not enough. Record whether a solution passes the relevant tests, whether a developer accepts it, and how much correction it takes to get there. Include tool-call and schema failures, retries, and the time users wait—not just the model’s answer quality.

  • Tool reliability: successful calls, invalid arguments, structured-output errors, and recovery after failure.
  • Latency: time to first token and end-to-end completion time, including the intended region and production-like traffic.
  • Usage: actual input and output tokens, cached-token use where applicable, retries, and tool calls.
  • Operations: errors, throttling, rate-limit behavior, and fallback performance.

Compare distributions and failure cases, not only averages. The reviewed provider sources do not establish comparable latency, uptime, or quality figures across providers, so measure these in your own intended deployment.

Area What to check Evidence and limitation
Coding quality Correct changes, test outcomes, edit acceptance, debugging, and refactoring behavior. OpenAI identifies coding tasks among GPT-6 Astra use cases, but provider pages do not constitute a common independent benchmark. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra documentation
Context Maximum context window, retrieval strategy, relevance, and truncation behavior. OpenAI lists a 1,050,000-token context window for GPT-6 Astra. That model-specific limit does not show that an entire repository will be supplied or used accurately. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra documentation
Integration Streaming, function or tool calling, structured outputs, SDKs, and endpoint support. GPT-6 Astra documentation lists streaming, function calling, structured outputs, and multiple tools; verify support for the precise model and endpoint you plan to use. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra documentation
Cost Input and output tokens, cached tokens, long-context pricing, tool fees, and retries. OpenAI documents token-based rates and fees for some tool-specific models. Rates and pricing can change; estimate from current official pricing and measured request traffic. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra documentation
Privacy and deployment Training use, abuse monitoring, retention, ZDR eligibility, data residency, subprocessors, and exceptions for enabled features. Policies vary by provider, endpoint, deployment, and feature; see the provider-specific details below. OpenAI data controls, Anthropic retention documentation, Gemini API ZDR documentation, Gemini Code Assist data governance
Operations Account-specific rate limits, model versioning, fallback behavior, and migration burden. OpenAI says rate limits impose request and token caps that depend on usage tier; confirm the limits that apply to your account and chosen model. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra documentation

Treat context length as one capability, not a quality score

A larger context window can make it possible to send more material in a request, but it does not establish that the model will identify relevant files, preserve important details, or produce correct repository-wide changes. Test your retrieval and prompting strategy with realistic repositories, including cases where relevant code is spread across files or buried among distractions.

Estimate cost from your expected request mix

Use the request patterns from your pilot to estimate spend: input and output tokens, cache use, longer-context requests, tool calls, and retries can all affect the bill. Include the mix of short questions and heavier tasks rather than extrapolating from one demonstration. Review current provider pricing before making the estimate; published prices and rates can change.

For GPT-6 Astra, the model page documents per-token pricing and notes that certain tool-specific models carry a fee per tool call. Apply the current rates to measured traffic rather than treating a single token price as the full cost of an assistant workflow. OpenAI GPT-6 Astra documentation

Check data handling for the exact product and features

Do not assume a provider’s policy applies identically across API endpoints, cloud-hosted arrangements, or optional tools. Confirm what happens to prompts, responses, files, and tool inputs for the product configuration you will actually deploy, and review contract terms where required.

OpenAI API

OpenAI says API abuse-monitoring logs may include prompts and responses and are retained for up to 30 days by default, subject to stated exceptions. Eligible customers may apply for Modified Abuse Monitoring or Zero Data Retention, but approval and endpoint or feature limitations matter. A request setting such as store: false is not, by itself, approval for an organization’s ZDR arrangement. OpenAI API data controls

Anthropic API

Anthropic distinguishes direct Claude API processing from cloud-hosted arrangements in which AWS or Google Cloud may act as data processor. Its documentation says ZDR requires contacting sales and is enabled separately for each organization. It also describes feature-specific retention qualifications: for example, programmatic tool-calling code-execution containers may retain data for up to 30 days, while other tool and structured-output paths have their own treatment. Check the exact combination of API, deployment, and features. Anthropic retention documentation

Google Gemini API and Gemini Code Assist

For paid Gemini Developer API services, Google says prompts and responses are not used to improve products, while documenting exceptions that include abuse-monitoring logs, 30-day storage for Google Search grounding, stored state for the Interactions API unless store is false, Live API session state, uploaded files, and explicitly cached content. Google says customers needing guaranteed ZDR or enterprise data-processing agreements should use Vertex AI. Gemini API ZDR documentation

Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise are separate products from the Gemini API. Google says Code Assist may process conversation history, open-file snippets, adjacent-file snippets, and cursor location; it describes the service as stateless and says it does not store prompts and responses in Google Cloud unless logging is configured. Google also says customer data is not used to train models without permission. Do not transfer these Code Assist statements to other Gemini products. Gemini Code Assist data governance

Make the choice against your hard requirements

  1. Set non-negotiables: identify privacy or contractual requirements, permitted cloud environments, required tools and output formats, latency targets, and budget limits.
  2. Shortlist compatible APIs: check the exact model, endpoint, feature support, account rate limits, and data terms against those requirements.
  3. Run the same pilot: use representative coding tasks with fixed context, prompts, tools, and acceptance checks.
  4. Compare outcomes and workload cost: weigh correctness and correction effort alongside tool reliability, latency, retries, and measured usage.
  5. Revalidate after changes: rerun the relevant evaluation when models, API behavior, pricing, or privacy terms change.

The right API is the one that meets your constraints and performs well on your own coding workload. Documentation can narrow the candidates; a controlled pilot determines whether the integration is dependable and economical for your assistant.
