You’ll need your own Telegram API credentials and an authorized account session. The example below limits retrieval to 100 messages; that is a sample bound, not an official quota or a guaranteed safe rate.
What you need before reading a channel
- Python in a project environment, Telethon, and basic familiarity with Python’s
asyncioworkflow. Telethon’s Quick-Start describes the library as asynchronous. - A Telegram account and your own
api_idandapi_hash, obtained through Telegram’s API development tools. Telegram’s application setup documentation says developers must use their own API ID; example credentials in documentation are placeholders. - A public channel username or another channel entity that your account can access. A public link does not guarantee every request will work in every circumstance; availability and access behavior can vary.
Telegram describes channels as broadcast tools that can have a public permanent URL. In Telethon, the API’s Channel type can also represent megagroups, so a broadcast channel should not be confused with a discussion group attached to it. See Telegram’s channel documentation.
Install Telethon and keep credentials private
Install Telethon into the Python environment used by your project:
python -m pip install telethonKeep your API credentials out of source control. The session created when you authorize the client is also sensitive: it can let someone act as your account. Telethon warns that anyone with a StringSession can log in and do anything the account can do; protect a local .session file or string session accordingly. See Telethon’s session documentation.

Read a bounded message history with Telethon
This example prints each message’s ID, date, and text. It uses placeholder credentials; replace them locally, preferably by loading secrets from a protected environment or secret store rather than publishing them in the script.

public_channel_usernamewith the channel’s public username. - Run the script. On first authorization, follow Telegram’s login prompts for your account. The client stores a session under the name
channel_reader. - Choose a deliberate message limit and save only the fields needed for your task. The example’s limit of 100 is just a bound for the sample, not a Telegram policy threshold.
Telethon’s Quick-Start demonstrates asynchronous message iteration and access to message fields; the API reference for iter_messages() documents its history options.

Choose history order and collection scope
iter_messages(entity, limit=None, ...) supports bounds, offsets, filters, and ordering controls. By default, it yields the newest messages first. Use reverse=True to traverse from oldest to newest.

These controls apply to history retrieval; they do not turn this script into a live update collector. If the task is an export, decide whether it needs text and metadata only or media downloads as well. Downloading media changes storage needs and throughput, so avoid fetching payloads your task does not require.

Handle flood waits and interruptions
Telegram may return FLOOD_WAIT_X, which means the action must wait for the stated number of seconds before being repeated. Do not respond with an immediate retry loop or assume a universal messages-per-second rate. Telegram’s API error documentation describes flood waits.
Telethon’s history reference documents wait behavior, and its takeout documentation notes that some calls in takeout sessions have lower flood limits. Takeout is not a way to bypass limits: initialization can raise TakeoutInitDelayError, which provides the required delay, and iter_messages() may require an adjusted wait_time.

- For longer exports, persist the latest processed message ID or another checkpoint so a restart can resume deliberately.
- Handle network and RPC errors, and record enough context to detect duplicate records instead of silently appending them.
- Use Telegram’s required wait when a flood error occurs; do not keep retrying before it expires.
Follow Telegram’s rules and protect people’s data
Telegram says API clients are monitored and warns: “If you use the Telegram API for flooding, spamming, faking subscriber and view counters of channels, you will be banned forever.” Review Telegram’s API application guidance and API Terms of Service before collecting data.
The API terms require client apps to protect privacy and prohibit using, accessing, or aggregating Telegram platform data to train, fine-tune, or otherwise develop, enhance, or deploy AI/ML models. Public visibility is not blanket permission for every downstream use. Collect only what you need for a legitimate purpose and account for applicable privacy, copyright, and data-protection obligations; the relevant legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and use.
