Concrete-based supercapacitors store charge in cementitious composites; carbon-fiber structural batteries store energy through battery chemistry inside load-bearing composites. Both combine energy storage with a structural role, but they use different materials, electrochemical mechanisms, and design priorities. Here, “structural battery” means the carbon-fiber composite type; cement-based batteries are a related but distinct technology.
What do the two technologies mean?
A concrete-based supercapacitor adapts cementitious materials to serve as electrodes, an ion-conducting electrolyte or separator, or parts of more than one of these. Conductive and electroactive additions provide charge-storage pathways while the cementitious body is intended to retain structural utility. Designs vary, so “concrete supercapacitor” does not describe one standardized cell architecture. Reviews of cementitious storage describe these approaches and their trade-offs in the 2025 review of cement-based batteries and supercapacitors and the 2024 review of concrete-based electrodes and electrolytes.
A carbon-fiber structural battery is a composite designed to carry mechanical load and store electrical energy. In this article, carbon fibers act as reinforcement and as battery electrode components; a structural battery electrolyte supports ion transport and contributes to the composite’s structural function. The authors of a 2024 review describe structural batteries as energy-storage materials that can carry a mechanical load while storing electrical energy (Gray et al., 2024).
The distinction matters because “structural battery” can also be used more broadly. Cement-based rechargeable batteries are an emerging adjacent category, not the same thing as either a concrete supercapacitor or a carbon-fiber battery composite.

How do their materials and energy-storage mechanisms differ?
| Feature | Concrete-based supercapacitor | Carbon-fiber structural battery |
|---|---|---|
| Structural framework | Cementitious material configured as an electrode and/or electrolyte or separator. | Carbon-fiber composite incorporating a structural battery electrolyte. |
| How energy is stored | Primarily by charge accumulation at electrode interfaces; engineered electrodes can also contribute pseudocapacitance. | Through battery redox reactions. Reported designs use carbon-fiber electrodes with battery-active materials. |
| Structural role | The cementitious body is intended to provide energy storage and structural utility, subject to formulation and strength trade-offs. | Fibers serve as reinforcement and electrode components; the electrolyte supports ion transport and load transfer. |
| Common research motivation | Distributed storage integrated into buildings or infrastructure. | Weight-efficient energy storage integrated into structures, including transport applications. |
| Key design tension | Promote conductive and ionic pathways without compromising mechanical integrity and durability. | Make fibers and electrolyte meet electrochemical requirements while retaining mechanical performance. |
Supercapacitors and batteries are not interchangeable just because both store electrical energy. A supercapacitor’s interfacial charge storage generally supports rapid charge and discharge, while battery storage relies on redox chemistry. Those broad distinctions do not by themselves establish which integrated material is better: that depends on the cell design, test conditions, and the structural job it must perform.
How do researchers build each type?
Cement-based supercapacitors
Researchers adapt electrode and electrolyte or separator functions to cementitious materials. Strategies described in reviews include conductive carbon-based phases, porous structures, and cement-based or modified cement electrolytes. The design challenge is coupled: porosity and conductive additions can support ionic transport and electrochemical behavior, but the cementitious material must also retain the mechanical properties and durability required for its intended use. More porosity is therefore not an automatic improvement if it weakens the structure (Oumer et al., 2025; RSC Advances, 2024).

Carbon-fiber structural batteries
In one 2024 demonstration, pristine carbon fiber served as the negative electrode, LFP-coated carbon fiber as the positive electrode, and the composite incorporated a thin cellulose separator and structural battery electrolyte. A separate 2025 design used a T800 carbon-fiber anode, an NMC111-coated carbon-fiber cathode, and a biphasic solid-liquid structural battery electrolyte. These are specific research architectures, not a single universal construction (Chalmers, 2024; Chalmers, 2025).
Where cement-based batteries fit
Cement-based rechargeable batteries are another research direction, and should not be mislabeled as concrete supercapacitors. A 2024 review distinguishes probe-type galvanic cells, which use dissimilar embedded metal electrodes and cement pore solution, from layered monolithic cells with cementitious anode, electrolyte, and cathode regions. The described probe-cell configuration consumes its anode and is not rechargeable; layered designs can be rechargeable when they use reversible active materials (2024 review of cement-based electrochemical systems).

What do published performance figures show—and not show?
| Reported figure | Technology and context | What the figure does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| More than 11 Wh/m² over 30 cycles | A 2024 review reports this for a particular layered nickel-iron cement-based battery configuration using nickel foam and related active materials. | It is an areal-energy result for a cement-based battery, not a concrete-supercapacitor result or a universal cement-system figure. |
| 30 Wh/kg; cycling stability up to 1,000 cycles | Reported in Chalmers’ 2024 research record for a particular all-carbon-fiber structural battery demonstration using LFP-coated carbon-fiber electrodes. | It is not a matched comparison with a concrete supercapacitor or a guarantee for other structural-battery designs. |
| 84 Wh/kg with structural battery electrolyte; 187 Wh/kg with liquid electrolyte | Reported in Chalmers’ 2025 record for different electrolyte configurations of its described NMC111 carbon-fiber full-cell design. | The two values refer to different electrolyte configurations and do not establish performance for every structural battery. |
These figures cannot be ranked as though they came from a controlled head-to-head test. The cement-based battery result is reported per area, while the carbon-fiber battery results are reported per mass; the devices, chemistries, and study conditions also differ. Performance work across these fields may report capacitance, energy by mass, area or volume, power, mechanical strength, and cycling under different methods. A single headline metric cannot capture both energy storage and structural usefulness.
What are the potential applications and current limitations?
The research motivations reflect the materials. Cement-based systems aim at distributed energy storage integrated into buildings or infrastructure. Carbon-fiber structural batteries aim to reduce the separation between a load-bearing composite and its battery, with weight-sensitive structures among the prospective uses. These are intended applications, not evidence that either technology is already deployed commercially.

- For cementitious systems: electrochemical pathways must coexist with strength, durability, and the practical requirements of large-scale infrastructure.
- For carbon-fiber composites: fiber architecture and electrolyte must support both mechanical and electrochemical performance; results from a laboratory cell do not by themselves establish full-structure performance.
- For both: prototype metrics should be read in their specific device and test context, not treated as product specifications.
Reviews and institutional research records describe these technologies as developmental. The 2025 cementitious review identifies further development as necessary for large-scale smart-infrastructure applications, while the Chalmers records describe material studies and demonstrations rather than market-ready components (Oumer et al., 2025; Chalmers, 2024; Chalmers, 2025).

Concrete supercapacitors are cementitious charge-storage composites, generally based on interfacial charge storage. Carbon-fiber structural batteries are load-bearing battery composites that use battery redox chemistry. They both seek to make a material perform two jobs, but they are not equivalent technologies—and cement-based rechargeable batteries form a separate, related category.
