1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor smooth React animations, start with the browser’s rendering work—not with a different animation library. Use CSS transitions or keyframes for simple effects, and use the Web Animations API (WAAPI) or a React animation library when you need programmatic control, gestures, or enter-and-exit choreography. Prefer transform and opacity where they fit, keep purely visual frame-by-frame values out of React state, and profile the result on the browsers and devices your audience uses. None of these choices guarantees that an animation runs off the main thread: its properties and the browser’s ability to composite it matter.
What “blocking the main thread” means for an animation
JavaScript animation code competes with other JavaScript work on the main thread, including event handling and React rendering. But the animation mechanism is only part of the cost. Browsers also calculate layout, paint pixels, and composite layers. An effect can be expensive because of the visual property it changes, even if the interpolation itself is simple.
CSS is not automatically off-main-thread, and choosing a JavaScript API does not automatically mean every frame blocks the main thread. Eligible CSS or WAAPI animations can be composited in supported conditions; other animations may still require main-thread work. The actual path depends on the property, browser, and effect.
Choose the simplest animation tool that fits the interaction
| Approach | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| CSS transitions or keyframes | Small, self-contained effects and transitions between known visual states | The properties still determine whether layout, paint, or compositing work is needed. CSS alone does not guarantee off-thread execution. |
| Web Animations API (WAAPI) | Imperative control over browser animations, playback, and timing | Acceleration still depends on browser support and the animated properties; complex physics or application logic may require JavaScript. |
| Motion for React | Declarative choreography, gestures, and enter/exit lifecycle patterns in React | Motion describes its engine as hybrid: some features fall back to JavaScript. That vendor description is not an independent performance benchmark. |
Custom requestAnimationFrame loop |
A custom simulation or canvas/DOM effect that needs per-frame logic | The callback runs on the main thread and must be short, time-based, cancellable, and narrowly scoped. |
For basic hover, focus, or state changes between two visual states, CSS is often the lightest fit. Use keyframes when the effect is a defined sequence. MDN distinguishes these authoring use cases and notes that CSS and JavaScript animations fall within the same broad performance category: CSS and JavaScript animation performance.

For React-specific orchestration, gestures, or lifecycle integration, consider WAAPI or a library. Motion’s current React documentation imports components from motion/react. Motion says its hybrid engine uses browser animation APIs where possible and falls back to JavaScript for capabilities such as spring physics and gesture tracking; treat that as the maintainer’s description, not a universal speed guarantee: Motion for React: Get started.
Prefer properties that avoid repeated layout and paint
A browser generally calculates layout, paints pixels, and composites layers. Changing height, width, or other layout-affecting values can trigger layout and subsequent rendering work. transform and opacity are strong starting points for movement and fades because modern browsers broadly support compositing them. Other properties vary in paint cost and acceleration behavior, so test the specific effect rather than assuming it is cheap.

- Use
transformfor movement or scaling when it can express the desired result. - Use
opacityfor fades. - If the design requires animating layout, keep the affected subtree and animated region small, then profile it on lower-powered devices.
- Use
will-changesparingly. It may encourage layer creation, but layers use GPU memory; applying it globally can waste resources.
Motion’s animation performance guide explains the rendering model and offers library-maintainer guidance. Compositor eligibility varies, so verify the behavior in the browsers you support.
Keep visual frame updates from triggering broad React work
Use React state for semantic or structural changes—for example, whether a panel is open. If a value changes every frame but has no meaning to the application beyond its appearance, it does not necessarily need to pass through component state and reconciliation on every frame. Where appropriate, let CSS, WAAPI, or an animation library update that visual output while React handles the meaningful state transition.

This is a design principle, not a rule that every animated state value is a problem. JavaScript work and React rendering share the main JavaScript thread, but whether a refactor helps depends on the component tree and effect. Profile before changing the architecture.
React’s useTransition marks updates as non-blocking so React can prioritize other work. It can help when an interaction also triggers an expensive UI update; it does not move arbitrary animation callbacks to a worker or compositor. See React’s useTransition reference.

Write custom loops with requestAnimationFrame
Use requestAnimationFrame for custom visual frame loops rather than guessing a cadence with setInterval. MDN describes it as a request for the browser to call a supplied callback before the next repaint: Window: requestAnimationFrame() method.
- Calculate from the callback timestamp. Base progress on elapsed time, not on the number of callbacks. Displays can refresh at different rates; MDN documents common examples including 60 Hz, 75 Hz, 120 Hz, and 144 Hz. Those are examples, not a guarantee about a particular user’s display.
- Schedule only while work remains. The API is one-shot: request another frame from the callback only if the effect is still active.
- Keep callbacks short. Batch DOM reads before writes where possible and avoid forcing synchronous layout.
- Cancel or stop when the effect ends. Do not keep scheduling frames for completed or unnecessary work.
- Account for hidden tabs. Most browsers pause callbacks in hidden tabs and hidden iframes; do not assume a loop continues at a steady rate while invisible.
For a straightforward interpolation, CSS or WAAPI is usually preferable because the browser can manage the timing without a custom callback calculating each frame.

Support reduced motion and profile real scenes
Honor the user’s reduced-motion preference with the prefers-reduced-motion media feature or equivalent library support. Reduce non-essential movement while preserving the interaction’s meaning and making state changes clear. MDN documents the feature at prefers-reduced-motion.
Then inspect the actual animation in browser performance tools. Look for long tasks, style recalculation, layout, paint, dropped frames, and compositing behavior. Test representative scenes across your target browser and device set, including lower-powered devices. A library or property choice cannot guarantee a particular frame rate across all of them.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Is the effect a simple transition between known states? Start with CSS.
- Does it need playback control or programmatic timing? Consider WAAPI.
- Does it need React choreography, gestures, or enter/exit behavior? Consider Motion or another suitable React library, while checking which features require JavaScript.
- Does it require custom per-frame simulation? Use
requestAnimationFrame, calculate with its timestamp, and keep the callback brief. - Can the effect use
transformoropacityinstead of repeatedly changing layout? Prefer that when it preserves the intended design. - Does every frame truly need to update React state? Keep purely visual updates out of broad React work where appropriate.
- Have you checked reduced-motion behavior and profiled the real scene in the browsers and devices that matter?
