If your iPhone 18 Pro Max shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, work through reversible checks first, then verify the SIM or eSIM and ask your carrier to rule out account and network problems. Consider Apple service only if those checks point to a device issue; a cellular problem alone does not establish eligibility for a replacement.

What SOS, No Service, and Searching mean

The status-bar message is a clue, not a diagnosis. Apple says No Service or Searching means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. SOS means it is disconnected from its own carrier network; in Australia, Canada, and the United States, emergency calls may still be possible through other carrier networks. See Apple’s SOS, No Service, or Searching troubleshooting guidance.

Before changing settings, note whether the problem affects calls, texts, mobile data, or all cellular service; whether it occurs in one location or several; and whether it started after travel, a SIM or eSIM transfer, an iOS update, or a plan change. These details can help distinguish a local coverage issue from a line or device problem, but none by itself proves the cause.

Try reversible reconnection and update checks

  1. Reconnect to the network: when a cellular network is available, open Settings, turn on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
  2. Restart the iPhone: after it starts again, check whether cellular service returns.
  3. Install available updates: connect to Wi-Fi and install any available iOS update. Then open Settings > General > About. If a carrier settings update is available, the iPhone will prompt you to install it. Apple lists these steps in its cellular troubleshooting guide.

Check the affected line and SIM or eSIM

Confirm the line is enabled

For Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular, select the affected line, and make sure it is turned on. If the line is missing, contact the carrier to confirm its setup, especially if it uses eSIM.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check a physical SIM only if your model has one

Apple recommends removing and reinserting a physical SIM when applicable. If the card is damaged, does not fit, or was transferred from another device, ask the carrier whether you need a replacement SIM. Do not assume every iPhone 18 Pro Max has a SIM tray: Apple’s regional Dual SIM guidance, dated September 18, 2026, describes different arrangements. Its page says that in mainland China the iPhone 18 Pro Max can be activated using eSIM or physical nano-SIM, and it lists the model among those supporting eSIM in Hong Kong and Macao. Check the exact device market before opening a tray or following physical-SIM instructions. See Apple’s Dual SIM guidance.

Check roaming when traveling

If the issue began while traveling internationally, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options for the relevant line and check Data Roaming. Turn it on only if it is appropriate for your plan: roaming may incur data, voice, or other charges. Apple’s iPhone Dual SIM user guide advises considering applicable charges.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Ask the carrier to rule out account and network causes

Your carrier can check information that is not visible in the iPhone’s settings. Ask it to confirm:

  • That the account is active and in good standing.
  • That your location has coverage and is not affected by an outage.
  • That the device is not blocked or barred on the network.
  • That the plan and affected line are set up correctly.
  • For eSIM, that the carrier supports it for your plan and device and that activation has completed.

Apple says eSIM setup requires an active plan from a carrier that supports eSIM and generally requires Wi-Fi or a hotspot during setup; the activation method depends on the carrier. For account, plan, coverage, or activation details, the carrier is the appropriate contact. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance explains the setup requirements.

Use network resets cautiously

If simpler checks fail, you can consider Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Apple says this removes network settings and previously used networks, disconnects Wi-Fi, and may turn off Data Roaming. It does not erase photos or other media. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward. Details are in Apple’s iPhone reset guide.

Reset Network Settings is not the same as Delete All eSIMs. The latter deletes every eSIM stored on the iPhone. Apple says you then need to set up a new eSIM or physical SIM to connect to cellular service. Do not use Delete All eSIMs as a routine troubleshooting step unless you have a plan for restoring cellular service.

When to request Apple service

If the carrier confirms there is no account or network issue and a hardware problem is suspected, Apple says service may be needed. Before contacting Apple or an authorized service provider, record the exact status message, affected line, locations and times, whether calls, texts, or data fail, and the checks you have already tried. That information can make it easier to explain the problem and what has already been ruled out.

The cited Apple guidance does not say that cellular trouble automatically qualifies an iPhone 18 Pro Max for replacement, and it does not establish a model-specific defect or replacement program. Ask Apple to assess the device and explain the available service options rather than assuming a replacement will be approved.
