To stop a database query from running during a Next.js build, find the route function that triggers it and choose when that route should render. In the App Router, check generateStaticParams; in the Pages Router, check getStaticProps. Keep build-time queries for data that can be published as a snapshot, defer route generation when supported, or render at request time when data must be current or request-specific.

Find which route code runs the query

Start with the build output and trace the database call back to a route entry point. Search the project for calls to your ORM or database client, then check what invokes those calls during prerendering.

  • App Router: Inspect generateStaticParams in dynamic route segments. Next.js runs it during next build, before generating the corresponding layouts and pages. If it queries the database to return every slug or ID, that query is part of the build. See the generateStaticParams reference.
  • Pages Router: Inspect getStaticProps and the paths supplied through getStaticPaths. Next.js permits database queries in getStaticProps, but the function supplies data for prerendering rather than fetching fresh data on every request. See getStaticProps and getStaticPaths.

Confirm the route’s behavior against your installed Next.js version, router, rendering configuration, deployment model, and build log. The right change depends on those details.

Choose when the route should query the database

Next.js supports different rendering strategies across an application. Choose according to whether the page can use a shared snapshot, whether its paths are known before deployment, and whether its data must reflect the current request.

Approach When the database is queried What the page represents Best fit
Static generation During the build for prerendered output A reusable build-time snapshot Public content that can be generated ahead of time
Deferred route generation When a route is first visited, in supported App Router configurations A generated route rather than one enumerated at build time Dynamic paths that are numerous or not all known at build time
Request-time rendering While handling each request Output based on data read at request time Data that must be current or varies by request or user
Static regeneration During the initial build for prerendered pages, then again as revalidation occurs A static snapshot refreshed periodically Content where periodic updates are sufficient

Keep build-time queries for suitable snapshots

If the page displays public content that does not need to vary by user or request, querying during the build may be the intended design. Static Generation produces HTML ahead of time that can be reused. A build-time database read is not inherently a problem; it is a mismatch only when its timing or data freshness conflicts with your requirements.

Defer App Router route generation when compatible

For a dynamic App Router segment, Next.js documents returning an empty array from generateStaticParams or using dynamic = 'force-static' so paths are generated when first visited rather than enumerated during the build. Check the API reference for the exact behavior and requirements in your project.

There is an important configuration caveat: with Cache Components enabled, returning an empty array causes a build error, and at least one parameter is required. Do not apply the empty-array pattern without checking whether Cache Components is enabled and whether your Next.js version supports the configuration you intend to use.

Use request-time rendering when the request determines the data

If each request must read current database values, or the result depends on the requesting user or request, use the request-time rendering option for your router rather than relying on prerendered output. Static Generation and Server-Side Rendering can be mixed across pages; a site does not have to use one strategy everywhere. The Next.js guide to rendering explains the distinction between generating HTML at build time and generating it for each request.

Use revalidation for periodic updates, not to erase the initial build read

In the Pages Router, getStaticProps supports revalidation so a statically generated page can be refreshed. That does not remove the initial build-time call for pages prerendered by the build: the function still runs to produce their initial output. Use revalidation when a reusable snapshot that updates periodically is acceptable, not when the goal is to avoid that initial query.

Keep database access on the server

Moving a query out of the build does not mean moving database credentials or query logic into browser-side JavaScript. In the App Router, Server Components can access a database through an ORM or database client; server-side code and credentials are not included in the client bundle. Preserve that separation when switching to deferred generation or request-time rendering. See the Next.js documentation on data fetching.

Apply the change to the cause, not just the symptom

  1. Identify the router and affected route. Locate the route file and confirm whether it uses the App Router or Pages Router.
  2. Trace the database call. Check whether it is called by generateStaticParams, getStaticProps, or another function reached during prerendering.
  3. Decide what the page needs. Keep static generation if a public snapshot is acceptable; consider deferred path generation if paths should be created on first visit and the App Router configuration permits it; use request-time rendering if data must be current or request-specific.
  4. Preserve server-only access. Keep credentials and database operations in server-side code rather than exposing them to client JavaScript.
  5. Build and verify. Run the build for your project and inspect its output to confirm whether the route is still prerendered or the query still runs during the build. Also verify the route at runtime using your deployment configuration.
