Tree-shaking can remove unreferenced modules or services when the code structure permits it; it does not guarantee that unused methods inside a service your app still uses will disappear.
1. Confirm which Angular build target you are optimizing
Start with the build target in angular.json. Angular distinguishes application builds from library builds: the application builder is @angular/build:application, while the library builder is @angular/build:ng-packagr. Do not assume optimization settings or output behavior for one apply to the other.
For an application, use its production configuration or enable the corresponding optimization option for the build you are measuring. Angular’s application optimization includes tree-shaking and dead-code elimination, along with script and style minification, critical CSS, and font inlining. See Angular CLI build options for the current build configuration details.
2. Make unused client code removable by structure
Use analyzable ESM imports and narrow entrypoints
Prefer ordinary ECMAScript module imports from the smallest supported entrypoint. If you maintain the API client, separate unrelated capability groups into distinct files or package entrypoints when those boundaries reflect real functionality. An application that imports only a subset of API services then gives the bundler a clearer opportunity to exclude the rest.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A broad barrel export is not automatically harmful, but it can undermine removal if it eagerly imports services, creates value references between them, or triggers top-level side effects. Review what the barrel actually imports and re-exports rather than assuming that a selective import from it guarantees a selective bundle.
Set side-effect metadata truthfully
Angular Package Format describes primary and secondary entrypoints as separate import specifiers and explains that top-level side effects can inhibit tree-shaking. A package can declare "sideEffects": false when its modules genuinely do not rely on top-level work being run. Do not add that declaration mechanically: if importing a module performs required registration or other behavior, telling the bundler it is side-effect-free can cause that behavior to be removed. See Angular Package Format.

3. Inspect the generated API client before changing it
For a client generated by OpenAPI Generator’s typescript-angular generator, inspect the generated services and models, the public barrel exports, imports between service classes, and the package metadata. Determine whether services are grouped by API or tag and whether your application imports only the groups it needs. The generator documentation lists a providedIn option whose values include root (the default), none, any, and platform; check the documentation for your installed generator version because supported versions and defaults can change. See OpenAPI Generator: TypeScript Angular.
providedIn configures Angular’s provider scope; it is not evidence that individual endpoint methods are independently removed. Choosing none may require the application to provide the service manually, so make that choice for injector and lifecycle needs as well as any bundle implications. The reviewed generator documentation does not promise one independently tree-shakable file per endpoint. If endpoint-level separation matters, look for genuine module boundaries or adjust the client architecture rather than relying on unused methods within a retained service to vanish.

4. Check whether dependency injection keeps optional code reachable
Runtime dependency-injection references can keep optional classes or services in the bundle. Angular advises library authors to make services provide themselves, which makes a service tree-shakable when it is unused. Its library guidance states: “Services should declare their own providers, rather than declaring providers in the NgModule or a component. Declaring a provider makes that service tree-shakable.” See Creating libraries.
If a widely used component or service injects an optional capability directly, that runtime token may keep the capability reachable even when some applications do not need it. Angular’s lightweight injection-token guidance describes using a small abstract token and providing the concrete implementation later when that pattern fits the architecture. This is a design option for library authors or client wrappers, not a requirement to add token abstractions to every generated API client. See Lightweight injection tokens.

5. Verify removal in a controlled production build
- Record the Angular version, build target and configuration, OpenAPI Generator version, and the client import pattern.
- Build the application with its production configuration and save the emitted bundle output.
- Remove the target service or import without changing other code, then rebuild using the same toolchain and configuration.
- Compare emitted chunks; inspect a bundle report or source maps if those are part of your workflow. Check that the build is using the optimized application builder rather than drawing conclusions from a development build or a library build.
- Report the result for that setup only. The relevant documentation establishes how optimization and module structure work, but it does not provide a measured endpoint-specific savings figure or prescribe a single analyzer.
No fixed percentage of bundle savings is established for tree-shaking unused endpoints from an Angular API client. The actual change depends on the generated client’s structure, the application’s references, and the production build.

Choosing an approach
| Approach | Potential benefit | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| One large service containing many endpoints | Simple client organization and injection. | Unused methods inside a retained service are not guaranteed to be eliminated individually. |
| Separate services by API or tag | Can give the bundler unreferenced service modules to remove when imports and side effects preserve the separation. | The reviewed generator documentation does not promise one service file per endpoint. |
| Separate package entrypoints or capability modules | Creates explicit import boundaries for applications that need only some capabilities. | Requires a client package structure and exports that keep those boundaries real. |
Change provider scope, including providedIn: none |
Lets the application control where a service is provided. | Changes injector responsibilities; does not establish endpoint-method-level tree-shaking. |
| Use lightweight tokens for optional dependencies | Can avoid a direct runtime reference from commonly used code to an optional implementation. | Introduces an architectural pattern that is useful only where optional injection is an actual retention path. |
