Angular’s httpResource starts requests reactively, exposes loading and error state as signals, and cancels an outstanding request when a signal used to build that request changes. Use hasValue() before reading value(), and reserve the API for reads rather than mutations such as POST or PUT.
How the request lifecycle works
httpResource is Angular’s reactive wrapper around HttpClient: it makes the request status and response available as signals. Unlike a typical HttpClient Observable, which starts work when subscribed to, a resource is eager and issues its request when its request function is evaluated. If that function reads a signal, a change to the signal causes the resource to make a request for the new input. Angular’s httpResource guide describes this behavior.
For example, a request function can use a signal holding the selected user ID to construct a URL or request object. If the ID changes while a request is pending, Angular cancels the outstanding request before issuing the replacement. This is useful for rapidly changing search terms, filters, or record selections: the resource tracks the latest reactive input instead of leaving the pending earlier request active.
Cancellation here is client-side cleanup, not a guarantee that the server never received or processed the earlier request. Nor should cancellation be treated as an ordinary HTTP error; the guide documents cancellation of the pending request, but does not prescribe every status transition around it.

Render loading, error, and value states safely
The resource exposes signals including isLoading(), error(), status(), and hasValue(). Use them to decide which UI branch to render. In particular, guard calls to value() with hasValue(): Angular warns that reading the value in an error state can throw at runtime. The guide’s example demonstrates value, error, and loading branches.

}Choose branch order to match your UI policy. For instance, a view may keep displaying an existing value while a refresh is in progress, or prioritize a loading indicator. A resource can also be given a defaultValue, which supplies a value in idle or loading states; therefore, loading does not always mean that value() is unavailable. Decide explicitly whether the default is suitable to display as real content. The API reference documents the resource options.

What appears in the error state
Network or connection failures, timeouts, and unsuccessful backend responses are HTTP request failures. Angular’s HttpClient reports them through the Observable error channel, and httpResource exposes the failure through its error() signal. Network and timeout failures have status 0; backend failures carry the status returned by the backend. Angular’s request guide describes these failure categories.
Handle the error with a useful fallback rather than assuming every failure has the same cause or message. The resource API also provides reload(), but whether to offer a retry button, automatic retry, or another recovery path is an application decision. Avoid unguarded reads of value() in the error branch.

NG0991 is not necessarily an HTTP response error
NG0991 indicates that an Observable-backed resource completed without emitting either a value or an error. One possible cause is an interceptor that catches an error and then completes without returning a value or rethrowing. In that case, the resource did not receive a normal response or an error to expose; do not assume NG0991 means the server returned an unsuccessful status. Angular’s NG0991 error reference explains this condition.
When to choose httpResource or HttpClient directly

Both approaches use HttpClient, so features such as interceptors remain relevant. Angular cautions that resources are for reads: cancellation can prematurely abort a mutation. Use the direct HttpClient APIs for POST or PUT operations rather than making a mutation through httpResource. The resource guide and the HttpClient guide explain the distinction.

The current Angular API reference marks httpResource stable since Angular v22.0. Check the documentation for the Angular version used by your application when relying on version-specific API details.
