Use GitHub Actions schedule for routine repository automation when a run can tolerate delays and should execute as a workflow against the default branch. Choose an external scheduler when you need to invoke a service directly, manage schedules independently of a repository, or use delivery controls such as retries and a dead-letter queue. Neither option guarantees an exact start time.
Can GitHub Actions run a cron job?
Yes. GitHub Actions supports scheduled workflows using POSIX cron expressions in the workflow file’s on.schedule setting. Schedules use UTC by default, but you can specify an IANA timezone. GitHub documents a minimum interval of five minutes, and each scheduled run uses the latest commit on the repository’s default branch. See GitHub’s workflow syntax documentation.
For example, a schedule that runs at 15 minutes past every hour is:
on:
schedule:
- cron: '15 * * * *'
This is a trigger for a GitHub Actions workflow, not a general-purpose system cron service. The workflow file must exist on the default branch for the schedule to trigger, and the run executes against that branch.

When should you use GitHub Actions scheduling?
Choose GitHub Actions when the scheduled task belongs naturally in the repository: for example, checking links, refreshing generated files, running a recurring test, or opening an issue based on repository content. The workflow can use the repository’s existing code and actions, and its schedule is versioned alongside that automation.
- The task is implemented as a workflow and should use the default branch’s latest commit.
- A delay during busy periods is acceptable.
- The schedule does not need to run more often than once every five minutes.
- You want schedule changes reviewed and stored with the repository rather than managed as separate cloud infrastructure.
A timezone can be specified using an IANA name. For a timezone observing daylight saving time, GitHub documents that a scheduled time in the skipped spring-forward hour advances to the next valid time; its example moves 2:30 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Check the platform’s cron and daylight-saving rules before relying on a local-clock schedule.

Why is my scheduled GitHub Action late?
GitHub warns that scheduled workflows can be delayed when Actions is under high load. The start of each hour is a particularly busy time, and sufficiently high load can cause queued jobs to be dropped. GitHub’s troubleshooting guidance recommends scheduling at a different minute within the hour to decrease the chance of delay. That is risk reduction, not a timing guarantee.
Also check the workflow’s eligibility: scheduled workflows only trigger when their file is on the default branch. GitHub says public-repository schedules are automatically disabled after 60 days without repository activity. Review the schedule event documentation if a run has stopped appearing.

When does an external scheduler make more sense?
An external scheduler is worth considering when the schedule should be managed separately from the code repository, when it should call a service API directly rather than start CI, or when its timing and delivery features better match the task. “External scheduler” covers many products, so behavior varies; Amazon EventBridge Scheduler is one concrete example for AWS-oriented workloads, not proof that every external option is more reliable or cheaper.
| Decision point | GitHub Actions schedule |
Amazon EventBridge Scheduler |
|---|---|---|
| What runs | A workflow on the latest commit to the default branch. | A configured target API operation; useful when an AWS service action need not begin as repository CI. |
| Schedule types | POSIX cron workflow trigger. | Recurring rate-based, recurring cron-based, and one-time schedules. |
| Timezone | UTC by default; an IANA timezone can be specified. GitHub documents spring-forward behavior for skipped local times. | Timezone evaluation is supported for cron and one-time schedules; use AWS’s documented expression and timezone behavior. |
| Timing behavior | Runs can be delayed under high load, and queued jobs can be dropped at sufficiently high load. | With flexible windows off, AWS describes invocation within a 60-second interval; a configured flexible window intentionally spreads invocation within that window. |
| Delivery failure controls | The cited schedule guidance warns of delay and dropped queued jobs. | Supports retries and dead-letter queues for target delivery failures, with at-least-once delivery. |
AWS’s 60-second description is an invocation precision window, not a sub-minute exact-time guarantee. For details on schedule types and flexible windows, see AWS schedule types documentation and the EventBridge Scheduler overview.

Can I schedule a GitHub Action in my timezone?
Yes. GitHub Actions supports an IANA timezone for a schedule; AWS EventBridge Scheduler also supports timezone evaluation for cron and one-time schedules. Do not assume the cron dialect or daylight-saving behavior is interchangeable between platforms. If a task must follow a local calendar time, verify how the selected scheduler handles daylight-saving transitions and skipped or repeated times.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I use AWS EventBridge Scheduler instead?
Consider EventBridge Scheduler when an AWS API target is the real task—for example, invoking an AWS service on a recurring or one-time schedule—rather than running repository automation first. Its retry and dead-letter-queue features help manage failed target delivery. They do not prove that the underlying task completed successfully: delivery to a target and the target’s eventual work are separate stages.

AWS documents at-least-once delivery, so a target may receive duplicate deliveries. Design operations to be idempotent where applicable, or otherwise ensure duplicate invocations cannot cause unwanted repeated effects. A flexible delivery window can be useful when the exact minute is unimportant and spreading invocations is acceptable.
What about credentials when GitHub workflows call AWS?
Using GitHub Actions does not require storing long-lived AWS credentials as GitHub secrets. GitHub can request an OIDC token and exchange it for temporary AWS access. The workflow needs id-token: write permission to request that token; this permission alone does not grant permission to modify AWS resources. AWS trust policies should include conditions that constrain which repositories or workflows may request credentials. See GitHub’s AWS OIDC configuration guide.
Quick Recap
How to decide
- Start with the task. If it is repository automation that belongs in a workflow, use GitHub Actions. If the scheduled operation is an AWS service API call that does not need CI, evaluate EventBridge Scheduler.
- Set a timing tolerance. If a delayed run or, under exceptional high load, a dropped queued GitHub run is unacceptable, do not treat GitHub’s schedule as a timing SLA. Evaluate a scheduler with timing and delivery behavior suited to the requirement.
- Check calendar needs. Confirm timezone, cron syntax, daylight-saving transitions, and whether a one-time invocation is required.
- Plan for failures and duplicates. Decide how to detect failed delivery and whether repeated target invocations are safe; configure retries and a dead-letter queue where appropriate.
- Account for operations and access. GitHub schedules keep configuration in the repository; an AWS scheduler puts schedule and permissions in AWS. If GitHub must access AWS, configure OIDC trust conditions rather than relying on unrestricted token access.
