If an Android notification or action button opens the wrong screen, the app’s notification link is routing you to the wrong destination. Android settings generally cannot change the screen encoded in that action. If you do not develop the app, check for an update and report the mismatch to the app’s support team. If you maintain the app, inspect its PendingIntent, deep link, and task configuration.
First, check when the wrong screen appears
Note whether the notification tap opens the wrong screen every time or only when the app was already open. That detail can help the app’s developer reproduce the issue, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
Before contacting support—or debugging your app—record:
- The app name and Android version.
- The type of notification and the specific button or action you tapped.
- The screen you expected to open and the screen that opened instead.
- Whether the app was already open when you tapped the notification.
What you can do as an Android user
- Check Google Play for an update to the app and install one if available.
- Repeat the tap and note the exact notification, button, expected destination, and actual destination.
- Send those details to the app developer through the app’s support channel or its Google Play listing.
A notification’s destination is normally determined by the app’s action, not by a setting that lets you choose a different screen. Changing notification permissions or other Android notification settings may affect whether or how alerts appear, but the reviewed Android guidance does not present those settings as a way to correct a misrouted destination. Clearing cache is not an established fix for an incorrectly configured notification action.

How developers should trace the destination
Android notifications use a PendingIntent for actions such as opening a screen when a user taps the notification. The app supplies that intent, directly or through a deep link; it is the routing instruction the system follows. Check the notification’s content action and every action button separately.
Verify each PendingIntent and its destination
- Confirm that the content PendingIntent targets the activity or deep link for the intended screen.
- For each action button, check its own PendingIntent and destination arguments. A button can route differently from the main notification tap.
- If different notifications should open different destinations, inspect their PendingIntent identities in app-specific debugging. Equivalent identities may cause an intent to be reused where distinct routing was intended; verify this in the app rather than assuming it is the cause.
Check Navigation deep links and the NavHost activity
Android Navigation supports explicit deep links to particular destinations, including destinations opened from notifications. Confirm that the link identifies the right destination and carries the required arguments. For programmatically created navigation graphs, Android recommends using TaskStackBuilder to create the deep-link PendingIntent. If the NavHost is hosted by an activity other than the app’s default launch activity, target the activity that actually hosts that NavHost.

Check Back behavior separately from the destination
A notification can open the correct screen while still producing the wrong Back or Recents behavior. Destination routing and task back-stack setup are related, but distinct: one determines which screen opens; the other determines what happens when the user navigates back or views recent apps.

For apps targeting Android 12 or later, remove notification trampolines
Android 12 and later restrict apps that target Android 12 or later from starting an activity in a service or broadcast receiver acting as a notification trampoline. A trampoline flow occurs when a notification tap reaches a service or receiver, which then calls startActivity() to open the screen. Android’s migration guidance is to create a PendingIntent for the activity the user should see and use it directly in the notification. Follow the Android 12 notification trampoline guidance.

During testing, Android documents this Logcat diagnostic: “Indirect notification activity start (trampoline) from PACKAGE_NAME, this should be avoided for performance reasons.” You can also inspect the SystemUI auxiliary dump service’s NotifInteractionLog section, as described in the same Android guidance. These checks help identify a trampoline; they do not replace verifying that the direct PendingIntent points to the intended screen.
