Use an explicit intent when your code knows which Android component should receive the request—typically for navigation within your app and for starting your own service. Use an implicit intent when you want Android to find an app that can perform an action, such as sharing content. The difference is how the recipient is selected; either kind of intent can carry data and extras.

What is the difference between explicit and implicit intents?

An intent is a message Android uses to request an action from a component. An explicit intent names its target component. An implicit intent describes the action and may include data or a category, but does not name the component; Android looks for a component that can handle it.

Decision Explicit intent Implicit intent
How the recipient is chosen Your code names the component, such as with Intent(context, TargetActivity::class.java). Android resolves the request to a component whose intent filter matches.
Typical fit A known destination in your app, deterministic navigation, or starting your own service. Handing a supported task to another app, or exposing an activity as a discoverable entry point.
Recipient choice The target is fixed by the intent. If multiple apps match, Android may show a selection interface; a chooser can let the user choose an app for that action.
Main implementation concern Check that the component and the data contract are correct. Make the action and data specific enough, and ensure a receiving filter matches them.
Security concern Naming a component does not make it private; component exposure still matters. An intent filter is not access control. A component may also be addressed explicitly.

Android Developers recommends naming the component when you need to start a specific component in your app. See Intents and intent filters.

When should you use an explicit intent?

For known destinations in your app

If a button should open a particular activity in your app, name that activity directly. This makes the destination deterministic and avoids asking Android to search for a handler when your code already knows the recipient.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

When starting your own service

Use an explicit intent for a service. Android Developers warns that an implicit service start is a security hazard: you cannot be certain which service responds, and the user cannot see which service starts. An implicit intent passed to bindService() has thrown an exception since Android 5.0 (API level 21). See Interact with other apps.

What explicit targeting does not guarantee

An explicit intent targets the named component regardless of that component’s declared intent filters. Filters describe ways a component can receive implicit intents; they do not prevent another app from explicitly targeting an addressable, exposed component. Decide separately whether each component should be available outside your app.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

When should you use an implicit intent?

Use an implicit intent when the request is about an action rather than a component you control, and another installed app may be able to perform it. Sharing is a common example: your app can describe the content and let Android find suitable receiving apps. Android may present a chooser or other resolution UI when several components match. A chooser is useful when the user may prefer a different app for each handoff.

Android’s Common intents guide catalogs additional cross-app tasks. Use an implicit activity intent only when a suitable handler is genuinely optional; handle the case where none is installed.

How does Android resolve an implicit intent?

Android compares an implicit intent’s resolution properties with intent filters declared by components. The main properties are the component name, action, data, and categories; extras are payload for the recipient and do not determine which component matches.

  • Action: The operation requested, such as viewing or sharing.
  • Data: A URI and/or MIME type. URI matching can involve the scheme, host, port, and path; MIME type also participates.
  • Categories: Additional characteristics of the activity or request. The intent’s categories must be covered by the filter.

A mismatch in an applicable action, data, or category check means that filter does not match. If you need both a URI and a MIME type, use setDataAndType(). Android’s guide notes that setData() and setType() each clear the other value.

Make filters reflect supported combinations

A filter that lists multiple actions, data types, or categories can allow combinations the component does not actually support. Use separate filters for distinct combinations, or ensure the component can correctly handle every combination the filter permits. Filters should describe real entry points, not serve as a broad substitute for validating incoming requests.

Include CATEGORY_DEFAULT for implicit activity starts

An activity intended to receive implicit starts through startActivity() or startActivityForResult() needs CATEGORY_DEFAULT in its filter. Without it, the filter will not be considered for those calls.

How to choose and implement the right intent

  1. You know the exact component: Create an explicit intent naming it, for example Intent(context, TargetActivity::class.java).
  2. You want another app to handle an action: Create an implicit activity intent with the appropriate action and, when relevant, URI, MIME type, and categories. Use a chooser if the user should select among matching apps.
  3. You are starting or binding to a service: Specify the service component explicitly.
  4. You declare an intent filter: Confirm it matches the combinations your component supports, and include CATEGORY_DEFAULT for implicit activity starts.
  5. You expose a component: Set its external availability deliberately. For components with intent filters, specify android:exported explicitly. On Android 12 and later, an app with a filtered component that omits this value cannot be installed. Set it to false when external access is not wanted.
  6. You launch an optional external activity: Catch ActivityNotFoundException so your app can respond if no installed component handles the request.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using an implicit intent for an internal destination: If your code knows the target, name it rather than relying on resolution.
  • Assuming a filter protects a component: Filters affect implicit matching; they are not an authorization boundary. Set android:exported intentionally.
  • Starting a service implicitly: Name the service component to avoid dispatching the request to an unintended service.
  • Assuming extras influence resolution: Extras provide information to the recipient; they do not make a filter match.
  • Declaring combinations the component cannot handle: Keep filter entries aligned with what the component actually supports.
  • Ignoring the no-handler case: An implicit activity request can fail when no suitable app is installed; handle ActivityNotFoundException.
