They can overlap, so an ad or tracking feature alone does not prove that software is spyware. The key questions are what the program does, what it disclosed, whether you agreed, and whether you can control or remove it.
What’s the difference between adware and spyware?
CISA defines adware as “a type of software that downloads or displays unwanted ads when a user is online or redirects search requests to certain advertising websites.” It defines spyware as “a type of malware that quietly gathers a user’s sensitive information.” The first term focuses on advertising behavior; the second focuses on covert information gathering.
| Question | Adware | Spyware |
|---|---|---|
| Primary behavior | Displays unwanted ads or redirects searches. | Secretly gathers sensitive information. |
| Main concern | Unwanted browsing disruption; the label alone does not establish that the software is malicious. | Privacy exposure, potentially including information or account access. |
| Can one program do both? | Yes. Software can display ads while also tracking activity. Assess its behavior and consent, not just its label. | |
“Adware” is used inconsistently. Some advertising-supported apps may be classified as potentially unwanted applications rather than malware. Microsoft says ad-supported software should identify itself, give users choice and control, allow a clear way to close ads, and offer a standard uninstall method. Targeted advertising by itself is not proof of infection; undisclosed tracking or deceptive installation changes the concern.
See CISA’s Malware Tip Card and Microsoft’s explanation of potentially unwanted applications for their definitions and criteria.

How can I tell if my computer has adware?
Look for changes that began unexpectedly, especially after installing an app or browser extension. The FTC lists unexpected pop-ups, a changed home page or search redirects, new toolbars or add-ons, slow or crashing performance, repeated errors, disabled system tools, and messages you did not send among possible malware symptoms. Microsoft also notes changes to desktop settings, added or changed files, crashes, and reduced storage as possible signs associated with adware detection.
- Ads appear unusually often or when you are not using a site that normally shows them.
- Your browser’s home page, search engine, or new-tab page changes without your choice.
- Searches redirect to unfamiliar sites, or an extension or toolbar appears that you do not recognize.
- The computer slows down, crashes, or behaves differently after a recent installation.
These clues are not a diagnosis: ordinary software problems and other causes can produce similar behavior. Microsoft specifically warns that unusual computer behavior does not always mean malware is present. Treat changes as a reason to investigate, not as proof.

For a suspected intimate-partner monitoring situation, the clues may be less visible. The FTC says stalkerware can secretly track location, read messages or email, access photos and videos, monitor online activity, or activate a microphone; it may appear under an innocuous name in settings. Unusual battery drain, data use, overheating, or unexpected restarts can be clues, but none confirms stalkerware on its own. See the FTC’s guidance on staying safe if someone may be spying on you.
Can adware steal my information?
Not necessarily. Showing ads or redirecting searches does not, by itself, establish that a program steals information. But categories can overlap: a program that presents ads may also track activity, and deceptive or hidden collection raises a privacy concern. Check what information the app says it collects, whether that collection was clearly disclosed and accepted, and whether the app provides meaningful controls.

Spyware’s defining concern is covert collection, which can expose sensitive information. CISA’s general advice warns that spyware or adware hidden in software may affect performance and give attackers access to data; that broad guidance is not a claim that every ad-supported app does so. If you suspect data or credentials were exposed, stop signing in to sensitive accounts on the affected device while you address the problem.
Are pop-up ads a sign of malware?
They can be a clue, but not conclusive evidence. A website may show ordinary advertising, while unwanted software can inject ads or redirect searches. Consider whether the pop-ups occur across unrelated sites, whether browser settings changed, and whether an unfamiliar extension or app appeared at the same time. Do not install a cleaner or click a pop-up’s security warning just because it claims your computer is infected.

How do I remove spyware safely?
For a general malware concern, the FTC recommends updating security software and running a scan. Avoid logging in to sensitive accounts on the affected device while you are addressing the issue. If removal is difficult, seek help from the device maker, trusted technical support, or someone knowledgeable whom you trust.
- Update and scan: Update reputable security software, then run a scan and follow its removal instructions. A scan can help identify threats, but no single symptom or scan result should be treated as a complete account of what happened.
- Review recent software: On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort or review by installation date, and uninstall recent apps you do not recognize or did not choose to install. Windows labels and layout can change between versions.
- Check browser extensions: Open your browser’s extensions or add-ons page, remove unfamiliar or unwanted items, and review the home page and search settings for changes.
- Protect accounts: After addressing the device, change passwords for accounts that may have been exposed and enable two-factor authentication. Do this from a device you believe is safe.
Microsoft’s Windows guidance for unwanted applications recommends using official download sources and reviewing apps and browser add-ons. Microsoft Defender is one scanning option within Windows; use updated security software appropriate for your platform.

What if I suspect a partner is monitoring my phone?
Treat this as a personal-safety issue, not routine device cleanup. If an abusive partner may be monitoring a device, removing an app or changing settings could alert them or increase danger. Do not contact an advocate or law enforcement from the potentially monitored device. Use another, safer device to seek help from an advocate, and get safety guidance before removing suspected stalkerware. The FTC’s stalkerware safety guidance explains why it can be safer to plan before making changes.
