A tablet running an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app can be an effective communication system when it fits the person’s communication needs, access method, positioning, daily environments, and support. It is not a universal substitute for dedicated hardware. The practical answer comes from individualized feature matching and trials with the person who will use the system—not from the device category alone.
What is the difference between an AAC app and a dedicated device?
A tablet with AAC software and a dedicated speech-generating device (SGD) are both forms of aided AAC. A tablet app can present symbols or text and produce speech; dedicated devices are another possible way to provide that communication. The form factor alone does not establish which system will work best for a particular person. ASHA’s AAC Practice Portal describes both categories.
The relevant comparison is between complete systems: communication software, hardware, access method, positioning, accessories, output, maintenance, and support. A tablet’s suitability cannot be judged by the app alone, and a dedicated device is not automatically the better fit for every user.
How do you decide whether an AAC app is a good fit?
Work with the person who will use AAC, their family or communication partners, and an AAC-qualified clinical team. ASHA recommends considering the person’s needs across settings and trying systems; the right choice may not be apparent at an initial assessment. Evaluate how well each system supports the person’s communication, rather than treating a single feature as decisive.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| What to compare | Questions to ask during feature matching |
|---|---|
| Communication fit | Can the person express the range of messages and communication functions they need? Do the vocabulary and display organization work for them? |
| Access | Can they select messages consistently using direct touch, a switch, alternative pointing, or another method they need? Would a keyguard help? |
| Positioning and output | Can the system be positioned or mounted reliably? Is its speech output suitable in the places where the person communicates? |
| Use across settings | Can the system travel with the person and be used with different partners in the environments that matter to them? |
| Durability and maintenance | Can the hardware tolerate expected daily use? What maintenance and technical or clinical support will be available? |
| Adaptability and preference | Can the system change as needs change, and does the person prefer and accept it? |
| Funding and total cost | What will the specific payer cover? What costs for hardware, app, accessories, service, or replacement would remain? |
Touch is not the right access method for everyone. Depending on the person’s motor and positioning needs, a switch, keyguard, alternative pointing method, mount, or other accessory may be important. Trials should assess the whole setup in realistic situations, not just whether an app opens or produces speech.
Does someone need to meet prerequisites before starting AAC?
No. ASHA’s National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons With Severe Disabilities says there are no specific age, cognitive, linguistic, or motor prerequisites for getting started with AAC. Decisions should be made with the AAC user, family, and professional team. The committee states: “However, no individual should go without communication, and all individuals should have access to AAC systems that promote effective communication.” ASHA National Joint Committee.

Will insurance or a public program fund an app-based system?
Funding rules depend on the payer and jurisdiction. In the United States, ASHA says coverage for tablets, apps, and computers varies; it also notes that coverage for dedicated SGDs varies. Check the individual plan rather than assuming either category is covered. ASHA’s AAC Practice Portal provides the relevant guidance.
Official programs in Canada and Australia illustrate that app-based and dedicated options can both appear in communication-equipment funding categories, subject to program-specific requirements. They do not establish eligibility for an individual or for another payer.

What accessories might matter with a tablet?
A compatible mount or stand may help position a tablet for the person’s access and communication needs; a device-specific keyguard may support accurate selection for some users. These are not universal requirements. Confirm that an accessory fits the person’s position and access method, the tablet or device, and the surface or mounting arrangement. ASHA identifies mounts, stands, and keyguards as possible AAC accessories, and the Canadian equipment list includes mounting systems and keyguards.
