If you want the MX Keys’ useful lighting behavior—not just illuminated keys—the closest documented alternative is Logitech MX Mechanical. It turns on as your hands approach and adjusts to ambient light, but replaces the MX Keys’ scissor mechanism with low-profile mechanical switches. Keychron K3 is another wireless, low-profile option with customizable RGB lighting, though its cited specifications do not establish automatic ambient adjustment or proximity activation.
What to match when replacing MX Keys
“Adjustable backlighting” can mean two different things: choosing brightness or lighting effects yourself, or having sensors switch the lights on and adapt brightness automatically. If you specifically want the MX Keys’ hands-near activation and ambient-light response, look for both behaviors rather than assuming an RGB keyboard has them.
The standard MX Keys is a wireless, backlit scissor-key keyboard. Logitech lists Bluetooth Low Energy and a Logitech Unifying USB receiver among its connection options. Its lighting runtime varies by setting and room conditions: Logitech gives an example of 146 hours at Level 4 in 100–200 lux, and 242 hours at Level 2 below 100 lux. Best match for automatic lighting: Logitech MX Mechanical
Logitech describes MX Mechanical as a low-profile mechanical keyboard whose backlit keys activate when your hands approach and adjust to lighting conditions. It also offers selectable backlighting effects in Logi Options+ and lets you switch among up to three devices. The trade-off: mechanical rather than scissor switches
MX Mechanical changes the typing mechanism. Logitech lists Tactile Quiet, Clicky, and Linear low-profile mechanical switch choices; the MX Keys uses scissor keys. The available specifications do not establish that the two feel alike, or that one is better. Choose MX Mechanical for the closer match in automatic lighting, not on an assumption of identical typing feel.
For RGB choice: Keychron K3
RTINGS describes the Keychron K3 as a low-profile wireless mechanical keyboard with full RGB lighting, while MX Mechanical’s backlighting is white-only. RGB provides more color choice, but that is not evidence of ambient-light sensing or hand-proximity activation. For a compact layout: Keychron K12
Keychron’s indexed listing describes the K12 as a wireless 60% mechanical keyboard with RGB backlight options and two-level adjustable feet. A 60% layout is substantially more compact than a full-size board: it does not provide the same dedicated key area as a full-size keyboard with a numpad and separate arrow-key cluster. The listing does not establish automatic lighting behavior. Keychron’s page could not be directly confirmed when accessed on 2026-10-04, so verify the exact variant, layout, and current availability before choosing: Keychron K12 listing.

Check the edition, layout, and connectivity before buying
Do not assume every MX Keys specification applies unchanged across editions. Logitech’s MX Keys for Business sheet, dated 2021-10-07, describes a full-size board with numpad and arrow keys, hand-proximity sensors, ambient-light brightness adjustment, Logi Bolt or Bluetooth connectivity, and switching among up to three paired computers. Those are business-edition details; confirm the exact consumer or regional SKU if a particular receiver, layout, or device workflow matters. Across the alternatives, verify the actual regional layout and operating-system controls for the SKU you intend to buy. The cited sources do not provide a like-for-like battery comparison, hands-on typing or noise results, or consistent brightness measurements, so those qualities cannot be ranked from these specifications.

Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad is relevant only if Mac-specific features outweigh illumination. RTINGS says the compared model has Touch ID and is intended for Mac computers, but lacks both backlighting and three-device pairing. It therefore does not meet a requirement for illuminated keys.
