If a hard drive is repeatedly clicking, grinding, or scraping and it contains files you need, stop using it. Power it down promptly if you hear grinding, and contact a professional data recovery service before running diagnostics or repair software. A soft, occasional click can be normal; the key is whether the sound is new, harsh, repeated, or getting worse.
What should you do first?
Choose your next step based on the sound, whether the drive is still accessible, and how important its files are. Do not keep restarting a drive that is making severe mechanical sounds just to see if it will work again.
- Repeated hard clicking, clunking, grinding, or scraping, with important files on the drive: Stop using it. If it is grinding, power it down promptly. Contact a professional recovery service before troubleshooting. Seagate gives the same priority in its sound guidance and advises powering down an internal drive that grinds in its internal-drive troubleshooting guide.
- Soft, occasional clicking while it works normally: It may be ordinary drive activity. Back up important files while the drive is accessible, then watch for a sound that becomes persistent, harsher, or more frequent.
- External drive disappears, but there are no severe mechanical sounds: If files are accessible, back them up first. Then check the connection and power with the steps below. Stop repeated attempts if abnormal sounds begin.
- The drive is backed up and still works: Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic. If it reports a failure, replace the drive rather than relying on it for important files.
What do hard drive sounds mean?
A click alone does not prove that a hard drive is failing. Seagate says clicking or chattering can occur during read/write activity, and an occasional soft click may be normal. Sound varies by drive, so listen for a change from its usual operation rather than trying to diagnose it by sound alone.
Occasional soft click or chatter
A soft, intermittent sound during activity can be normal. Back up important files and monitor the drive. A sound that becomes persistent, hard, or accompanied by clunks or grinding deserves more caution.

Repeated hard clicks, clunks, grinding, or scraping
These sounds may indicate a physical problem. Continued use of a grinding internal drive can make recovery harder or impossible, according to Seagate’s troubleshooter. If the data matters, do not run scans or recovery software first; seek recovery advice.
Beeping or not spinning on an external drive
Power or cable problems can contribute to beeping or failure to spin. If the drive has no severe mechanical noise, check that it has compatible power and try the connection checks below. If it starts clicking or grinding, stop and treat it as a possible physical failure.

Make sure the sound is coming from the drive
A fan or another computer component can sound like a noisy disk. Seagate recommends identifying the actual source of the noise. Do not run extra tests on a suspect drive containing valuable files just to confirm a sound; preserving access to the data comes first.
How to check an external drive that disappears
Use these checks only when there are no severe mechanical sounds and you have decided that limited troubleshooting is appropriate. Seagate’s noisy-drive guidance recommends checking the USB connection, port, cable, and another computer.

- Connect the drive directly to the computer. Remove any USB hub or dock and connect the drive to a USB port on the computer. On a desktop, try a rear port.
- Check power. For a drive with a separate power adapter, confirm that it is connected and suitable for the drive. A powered hub may help if the drive is not receiving enough power, but do not use connection experiments to keep cycling a mechanically noisy drive.
- Try a known-good cable and port. Replace the cable with one known to work and try another port.
- Test another computer. If the drive is detected, back up accessible files before running diagnostics or other troubleshooting.
If the drive remains undetected or begins making abnormal mechanical sounds, stop routine connection checks. A disappearing drive can reflect a connection or power issue, but it can also be a sign of drive failure.
Should you run diagnostics or recovery software?
Decide what matters more before running a test: the data on the drive or continued use of the device. Diagnostics can help assess a drive that remains functional and whose important files are backed up. They are not the first step when a drive is making harsh, repeated mechanical noises and the files matter.

- If important data may be at risk and the drive clicks or grinds: Stop using it and contact a recovery service before troubleshooting. Avoid repeated restarts, repair scans, formatting, and software that continues to access the disk.
- If the drive is accessible and backed up, with no warning sounds: Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic, such as Seagate SeaTools where applicable. A failed test is a reason to replace the drive, not to trust it with important files.
- If the drive is merely slow: Slowness by itself does not establish mechanical failure. Back up accessible files first; if there are no warning sounds, check drive health with the manufacturer’s diagnostic.
Do not open a sealed drive, tap it, freeze it, swap its circuit board, or format it in an attempt to fix a physical problem. These actions are not supported by the manufacturer guidance cited here and may put data at further risk.

There are two different decisions: whether to pay a specialist to attempt recovery, and whether to replace the drive for future storage. A replacement drive does not recover files from the old one. Seagate directs users who need data from a persistently clicking or grinding drive to recovery services; Western Digital also provides data recovery and partner information. Neither cited page establishes a guaranteed recovery or a neutral comparison of provider prices or success rates.

- Choose replacement without recovery if you accept losing the data or already have another copy. Use a new drive for storage or as a separate backup destination, not as a way to repair or read the suspect disk.
Seagate’s sound and troubleshooting guidance is manufacturer advice, not a universal diagnosis for every hard drive or host computer. These instructions concern hard disk drives; Seagate’s internal-drive guidance should not be applied automatically to SSDs.
