You can translate a foreign-language stock report on your own computer with a local model runner such as Ollama: install the runner, download a model, and translate the report in short passages while checking each result against the original. Local inference can keep prompts and report text from being sent to the model provider, but it does not make the translation authoritative or remove your responsibility to check how the report may be used.
What “local” means—and what it does not
A local model runs inference on your computer rather than sending the text to a provider’s hosted model. Ollama’s documented local API is http://localhost:11434/api, and calls to that local endpoint do not require an API key. Ollama documents cloud-hosted requests separately; those use its cloud endpoint and require authentication. If you connect another app or script, check its endpoint and model selection instead of assuming that an Ollama integration is local. See Ollama’s API introduction and authentication documentation.

Ollama’s privacy policy, last updated March 2026, says: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” That statement applies to content processed locally through Ollama, not every component on your computer. Other apps and system services may have their own data flows, and Ollama describes cloud use separately. Read the Ollama Privacy Policy and check the software you use around the model.
Local processing is a privacy choice, not a guarantee of translation quality or permission to use a document. Do not process material restricted by an employer, client, or publisher unless your applicable terms allow it. Local inference does not change those terms.

Install Ollama and download a local model
Ollama’s quickstart documents a Gemma 4 E2B example. Its model download is about 7.2 GB, and Ollama recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or unified memory for this model. With less VRAM, the computer may use system RAM, which can make responses slower. These are figures for this model example, not universal requirements for local translation; requirements vary by model and can change. Check the Ollama quickstart for current instructions.

Download and install Ollama using its official download page, then open the app.

In a terminal, download the example model with
ollama pull gemma4:e2b. -
Start an interactive session with

Test the model with a short passage from the same language and kind of document you plan to read. A model that starts successfully is not thereby shown to translate your particular language pair, financial terminology, or report format reliably.
Translate the report in controlled passages
Do not send a long, structured report as one request. LocalAI’s documentation recommends translating one sentence or paragraph at a time rather than a whole document. Work through the report in manageable sections, retaining each passage’s page, heading, and table context so you can find it again in the source. See LocalAI’s translation guidance.
For each passage, ask the model to translate into your target language and preserve the original structure. A prompt can request that the model:
- Keep paragraph breaks, headings, table rows, and footnote markers in place.
- Retain company and executive names, ticker symbols, currencies, and units as written.
- Flag wording it cannot confidently interpret instead of silently filling in a guess.
- Return only the translation alongside a clearly marked copy of the source passage, if that format helps you compare them.
These are practical prompt instructions, not a guarantee that the model will follow them. Keep a copy of the original and place it beside the translation. For tables, translate the cells without losing which value belongs to which row or column; if the layout becomes unclear, return to the source rather than inferring relationships from flattened text.

Review the translation against the original, especially wherever a small textual error could change the meaning of a company’s results or outlook. Check names, dates, decimal separators, currencies, units, ratios, footnotes, table headings, and the direction of the claim. In particular, verify negation and qualifiers: “increased” is not “did not increase,” and “may” is not “will.” These checks are safeguards for the reader, not evidence that a model has passed a financial-translation accuracy test.
No credible comparative benchmark or model-quality ranking for financial translation across specific language pairs is established by the sources cited here. Treat local output as a reading aid. Verify material figures and conclusions in the original, and do not treat the translated text as proof that a company statement or investment thesis is correct.
Make sure an app is using the local model
If you use a graphical client, document tool, or script instead of Ollama’s terminal, verify that it is configured to reach the local server at http://localhost:11434/api and has selected a model available on your machine. An app that offers Ollama support may still use a hosted service if configured to do so. Ollama’s local API does not need an API key; its hosted API is a different endpoint and requires authentication.
If the app cannot connect, first confirm Ollama is open and the model has been downloaded. Then check the app’s endpoint and selected model against the local setup. Avoid entering restricted report text until you have confirmed where the app sends it.
