For routine temporary-file policy on a systemd-based Linux host, systemd-tmpfiles is usually the better fit: it can create and remove files and directories as well as clean them by age, using declarative tmpfiles.d rules and systemd integration. Keep tmpwatch when an existing script or distribution workflow depends on its command-line behavior. They are not interchangeable by age threshold alone: their default timestamp rules differ, so a migration can change which files are deleted.

The systemd project describes systemd-tmpfiles as generic file-management functionality as well as temporary-file management. See the systemd-tmpfiles manual. For the timestamp details, consult the tmpfiles.d manual and the relevant installed tmpwatch(8) manual; the documented defaults are not identical.
Why timestamp defaults matter
An age such as “10 days” does not mean the same thing in both tools unless they use the same timestamp basis. With tmpwatch‘s default access-time basis, reading a file can affect whether it appears stale. The default selection for systemd-tmpfiles considers multiple timestamps for files, while directory handling differs from file handling. A direct conversion of the age number, without choosing the intended timestamp semantics, may therefore remove a different set of entries.
Define what “unused” means for the workload first, then choose the corresponding timestamp behavior in the new rule. Also scope rules to the intended paths and entry types: systemd-tmpfiles --clean cleans entries with configured ages; it is not a blanket removal of every file.

Which one should you use?
Choose systemd-tmpfiles for ongoing systemd policy
Use it when you want one declarative policy to handle file or directory creation, removal, and age-based cleanup, and to integrate with systemd’s service model. Its breadth makes it a natural choice for new routine policy on a systemd host, but the recommendation is based on documented scope—not a guarantee that every distribution has the same configuration.
Keep tmpwatch when its workflow is already part of the system
If a legacy script or distribution job relies on a particular tmpwatch command, retaining it can be reasonable. Whether a distribution currently packages it is distribution-specific; check that distribution’s package documentation and the host’s installed manual rather than assuming availability.

Before migrating a tmpwatch cleanup job
- Inspect the host’s actual policy. Review installed vendor and administrator
tmpfiles.dfiles, plus the cleanup service and timer. The systemd-tmpfiles manual describes configuration and invocation; the systemd temporary-directories guide discusses cleanup integration. Do not infer local policy from an upstream example. - Choose the staleness timestamp deliberately. Compare the old command’s options with the new rule’s age behavior in the tmpfiles.d manual. Preserve the intended meaning of “old,” not just the numerical threshold.
- Constrain the rule. Specify the intended path and entry types, and check that the configured age applies only to the files or directories you mean to clean.
- Verify local scheduling and version. Check the target host’s installed systemd version and the actual service or timer schedule. The Debian systemd 262 manual page documents that packaged manual’s behavior; it does not establish another distribution’s local defaults.
- Review deletion candidates safely. Test the configuration in a safe environment and inspect which entries would be affected before relying on automated deletion.
Documented defaults are not universal guarantees
The systemd temporary-directories guide describes common cleanup defaults of 10 days for /tmp and 30 days for /var/tmp. These are defaults documented by that guide, not promises that every distribution, system version, or administrator configuration uses those values. Check the installed rules on the machine in question.
Applications should not rely on cleanup as their only safeguard, or assume that temporary files will remain indefinitely. The same guide notes that cleanup may be unavailable in some environments and recommends application-side handling. An application that needs a file for a particular operation must manage that file’s lifecycle accordingly.
