For most Plex libraries, use a full initial backup, then schedule incremental or snapshot-based backups with version retention. Keep a copy on a separate device or system when practical. That approach avoids recopying unchanged data on every run while keeping earlier restore points—but the right schedule and retention depend on how much recent change you can afford to lose, available storage, and the backup tool’s restore process.

Full vs. incremental NAS backups: what changes?

A full backup copies all selected data to establish a baseline. An incremental backup records changes since an earlier backup state; in a snapshot-replication workflow, the first replicated snapshot may be full and later ones incremental. The exact behavior depends on the NAS software and backup method. TrueNAS describes that full-then-incremental pattern for replication snapshots, while Synology documents block-level incremental backups and version retention.

Decision Full backup Incremental or snapshot-based versions
Initial copy Copies all selected data to create the baseline. Typically also requires an initial baseline; TrueNAS documents its first replication snapshot as full.
Later runs May copy unchanged data again, depending on the tool. Supported tools can record or transfer changes rather than repeating the entire copy. Synology documents block-level incrementals and cross-version deduplication.
Restore choices A standalone copy may be straightforward to restore, depending on its format and software. Can offer multiple restore points. Check whether recovery depends on a chain of versions or specific software.
Protection scope Only covers the selected data and destination. Also only covers selected data and destination; incremental scheduling alone does not protect against a failure that affects the source and its local copy.
Useful role Baseline or periodic standalone copy. Routine updates and version history when the NAS tool supports the method and its restore process is understood.

Incremental backups are not automatically faster, cheaper, or safer in every setup. Outcomes depend on data changes, deduplication, retention, destination, and restore design; the available vendor documentation does not establish a Plex-specific performance benchmark.

What should a Plex backup include?

Media files and Plex server data are separate

Your movie and TV files live in media shares; Plex’s server data is separate and contains server-specific information. Make sure the NAS backup job selects the media shares you want protected as well as the Plex Media Server data directory. A copy of the server data directory does not, by itself, back up the video files.

Back up the Plex Media Server data directory

Plex recommends backing up its main data directory, which can contain metadata, view states, and settings. Its location varies by operating system, so use Plex’s official data directory location guide to identify the right folder for your server. Plex notes that archiving the directory can help with large libraries because processing many small metadata files may take a long time. Windows and Linux users may exclude the Cache directory if desired. Do not put the archive inside that same Plex data directory. See Plex’s backup guidance for details.

Treat Plex’s scheduled database backup as an extra recovery aid

Plex’s scheduled maintenance backs up the core SQL database every three days and retains up to three rotating copies by default. Plex explicitly says this does not back up all metadata and is not a substitute for backing up the full Plex Media Server data directory. It also does not copy your movie or TV files. See Plex’s Scheduled Tasks documentation.

Where should you store the backup?

  • Another dataset or pool on the same NAS: Convenient for snapshots or local replication, but it remains on the same system. TrueNAS distinguishes local from remote replication in its backup and replication documentation.
  • External USB storage: A separate device can keep a copy off the NAS. Synology lists external devices among its supported backup destinations; confirm your NAS supports the drive, filesystem, and capacity.
  • A second NAS or remote system: This separates the backup from the source hardware. TrueNAS documents remote replication, and Synology supports remote NAS destinations.
  • Cloud storage: This can provide an offsite copy, but compare capacity, bandwidth, recovery time, retention, and expense. TrueNAS notes that provider accounts and storage or transfer charges may apply in its backup documentation.

Synology warns that a local backup alone does not address all risks from a RAID crash or drive failure. Its Hyper Backup stores multiversion data in a proprietary repository that Synology says can be browsed and restored with Hyper Backup tools. If you use it, include access to those tools and the repository in your recovery plan; do not assume another vendor’s backup format works the same way. See Synology’s NAS backup documentation.

How to choose a schedule and retention policy

Choose how often to back up based on how much recent change you can lose, how frequently your library and Plex data change, and the storage and network capacity available. Keep enough versions to recover from an unwanted deletion or change discovered later, while accounting for the space those versions require. There is no universally correct schedule or retention period for Plex, and Plex’s every-three-days database setting is not a recommendation for backing up the entire library.

Before relying on a NAS backup workflow, check:

  • Which media shares and Plex data folders it includes.
  • How many versions it retains and how long they remain available.
  • Whether individual files can be browsed and restored, and what software a restore requires.
  • Whether the destination is on the same NAS, an external device, another system, or in the cloud.
  • Whether storage, transfer, hardware, or recovery costs fit your setup.

A practical backup plan for a Plex NAS

  1. Create a full baseline. Select the media shares you want protected and the Plex Media Server data directory. Store the archive outside that Plex directory.
  2. Schedule incremental or snapshot-based versions. Use the NAS tool’s supported method for routine changes, and set retention according to your capacity and desired restore history.
  3. Keep a separate-destination copy when practical. A second system, external device, or cloud destination can protect against some failures that affect the source NAS. A copy on the same NAS remains useful for some recovery situations but is not an independent hardware-loss copy.
  4. Verify the recovery path. Check that backup jobs succeed and periodically confirm that you can restore the files you need using the required tools and credentials.

This is a general recommendation based on documented NAS backup capabilities and destination risks, not a tested configuration or guarantee of recovery. No Plex-specific runtime, storage-saving, restore-time, or reliability benchmark is established by the cited documentation.
